I know this is a rather unpopular sentiment, but I appreciate essence and fill to the same degree but in entirely different ways. There's beauty in watching Mang0 or Plup free-form in insanely creative ways, but there's beauty in the technical proficiency (informed by insurmountable knowledge on a foundational level) of watching M2K's Marth or Wizzy's Falcon.

I wonder if its the fact that Fill is essentially creativity, and benefits from psychological advantages like confusion or deception, whereas Essence is "getting the job done". Ultimately in a competitive setting your goal is to win. So this isn't art, because in art there is no goal. So Essence is ultimately king. But we are humans, and top tier Fill can fuck you up. But ultimately if you are psychologically unmovable, Essence wins. But it's a battle. I'm obviously thinking about Mango vs Armada here. I definitely enjoy both styles but I have a feeling that Essence has a slightly higher ceiling than Fill, possibly.

Essence means the player has a specific gameplan and uses a “flowchart” type play style to exploit their best moves and optimize their punishes. Fill means the player doesn’t have a narrow play style and often get custom with their punishes.

I think the idea is that Mang0 does a lot to trip you up. He places lasers perfectly just to get you in a disadvantageous position. I see your point. That SHOULD be "essence". He's building his whole gameplan around laser and placing moves just to make you doubt yourself. But in Tophs mind essence means you have a very specific win condition and fill means you're doing literally anything to win. Mango's gonna throw the book at you.
