I don't care if Sam isn't the playable character when we get a new Splinter Cell game. He can be behind the desk being your boss for all I care. I just want the good stealth gameplay and a good geopolitical intrigue story.
@3chel0n136 жыл бұрын
Amen. The story should be the mission. Not the people accomplishing that mission. One of Splinter Cell's greatest feats in the first three titles was making Sam interesting while also making him such a small, insignificant part of a much grander conspiracy to unravel. The world felt large, mysterious and hostile and you were a tiny piece of the puzzle. From Double Agent on, that was completely ruined. Sam is the focus, and he's a super-hero that does the work or 20 different agencies and teams combined.

I own the DS version of Chaos theory and to get the code that you could not find, when you enter the office where you stop the timer, the table to the left of the computer has the code. You just pick it up from then and go to the vault, do what you need to do in there, watch the cutscene at the end, and you’re done. And by the way, the door you were at where Fisher said he didn’t know the code: that’s the extraction. You will need to watch the last bit of dialogue to know the code as it isn’t added to the OPSAT. Hope this helps.

Oh wow, this brought me back memories of when I used to work at Gameloft Brazil back in 2007, and I was tasked to localize and QA test a mobile port of Splinter Cell made in JAVA for the mobile phones of the time. It was painful. As seeing as there wasn't an unified OS environment for mobile phones back then (there wasn't Android/iOS around), there were MULTIPLE (and I mean HUNDREDS of) builds of the same game ported for each different mobile device. Since most of the development time was used for porting the games, they are all just as good as you can imagine, including Splinter Cell (I think Chaos Theory? A sprite-based, 2D representation of it, at least), which was _awful_ .
@ttenor126 жыл бұрын
I played almost every single version of the Splinter Cell games released for 240x320 and 128x160 on my respective Nokia 5300 and 5200 back in the day, they were just amazing, as you mentioned, the games were sometimes quite different depending on the resolution, which also depended on the model of the phone. The only one I couldn't play was Pandora Tomorrow 3D, which was only playable on Sony Ericcson devices due to a "3d mascot capsule" crap that wasn't included in anything that wasn't a Sony device.
@blakegriplingph4 жыл бұрын
I feel your pain fam. If people would think that the Android ecosystem is already fragmented enough as it is, it was far worse back then due to having to scale back a full fat J2ME title to every single platform from a Nokia 6600 all the way down to a 3510i. And both the art and coding teams suffer from such madness.

I remember getting Chaos Theory for the DS when it came out. At the time (I was 14/15) I was obsessed with the promise of 3D graphics on a handheld. But like you, I never made it past the bank level. It was only several years later that I discovered the glory of the pc version. Speaking of which, the kill/knock out animations DID trip me up the first time I played it. I thought the kill animation was just Sam knocking out guys with his fist, while the pacify option looked like he was strangling them. (I didn't watch MMA back then, so I didn't know you could strangle a person JUST enough to put them to sleep.) It was only when I got to one of the "Don't kill anyone" missions that Lambert's freaking out told me I was mistaken. So, I don't know... Maybe the dev who switched the animations for "Essentials" felt the same way I did?

I made a comment in the last video that I would return to it a year later after E3 2019, and if we had still not heard any news by that point then I would start to believe the franchise is dead ... I always saw Essentials as a greatest hits, I am not sure but I think some of the “new” levels are actually versions of bonus levels for the PS versions of Splinter Cell and Chaos theory. But I could be Wrong. While essentials wasn’t the greatest I like what they did with it. Collected a bunch of levels from previous games almost like a greatest hits. I wish more developers would make games like this. Imagine a Mario game with Redone levels from previous games.
@albanveshti23693 жыл бұрын
i agree with your point. perhaps essentials wasn't the best game from a gameplay standpoint, but the concept of just compiling some of the best levels in the franchise seems like a cool concept
@lionocyborg6030 Жыл бұрын
The GBA Pandora Tomorrow alarm system is in the original GBA game too, but it only comes into effect in late game levels starting with either Shipyard or Nuclear Plant. You can still disable the alarm within that initial time limit but on those levels on, you aren’t forced to reload if you miss it: you just need to hide from the elite guards, preferably above ground level. The Piotr boss on the oil rig is a tad easier once you know how to do it: you’re supposed to hit him while hanging from a pipe as it’s easier to pick up speed again once you put your gun away. Repeat for all pipe swinging sections in this part of the level and you get him easily. It’s still the worst part of an otherwise good level though and I was stuck on it for a while as a kid as said solution is not obvious at all.

I'm starting to wonder if any proposed SC game for current gen got scrapped because it wasn't microtransaction-viable. Developers like Ubisoft seem so driven towards this model that they'd almost deem 'proper' games to be unworthy at this point. Granted, they could shove all that crap into a Splinter Cell game, but quite frankly I'd rather they leave the series alone rather than turn it into some cash-cow. The profit-factor is really starting to ruin games.
@phil59925 жыл бұрын
This is whats gonna happen, just watch. A splinter cell "title" will be revealed at e3 either 2019 or 2020. And I guarantee you that it will take the same form of wildlands mixed with the division. When you first start the game, you'll create "your own splinter cell operative" in an attempt to "give the player the most immersive splinter cell experience to date". Bullshit PR buzz words. Michael Ironside will be voicing Sam Fisher, however hell act as a mission giver and head of fourth echelon and probably won't be a playable character. Sam Fisher will become the games narrative, acting as the story teller and dialogue as the game progresses just like grim in the previous titles. you'll be "tasked with the objective to build up the agency and it's resources through completing tasks, missions, and recruiting personnel for the agency with help from other splinter cells currently in opperation" aka, other players. Essentially, it will become the division with the splinter cell name stamped on it. It'll have the customization options and progression just like wildlands, only all the best and most desired cosmetic gear and tactical clothing will be blocked behind loot boxes and in game currency, again, just like wildlands. I'd honestly be willing to bet money that of a splinter cell title is revealed, this is exactly what it's going to be

No. It's because they didn't sell well regardless. Ubi tried for years with Prince of Persia, Rayman and SC to make them juggernaut franchises only to find their sales were "lukewarm at best".They then decided it was better to make more devs work on fewer larger games that were more guaranteed to succeed.

Unless you were left-handed, you could move, aim and shoot at the same time so playing as a Merc felt really satisfying, like a proper shooter. And the co-op was proper and good fun as well. On a Nintendo DS! Yeah it looked like shit in some areas, but there were far worse contenders out there... Also the levels do improve later on... Some are skipped entirely via a cutscene or storyline, but some were done really well. Too bad you didnt stay to get through the rest :( And I agree on Essentials. Just read up on what happened 'in between chaos theory and Double agent'. I have the game and 'enjoyed' it, but it was a mess that had wayyy too much marketing vs actual product delivery.

GBA Splinter Cell 1 is how I got into the series and why I got the Xbox version after. I loved seeing the levels I was used to in 2D in their original 3D format, Sam was no longer a silent protagonist, I had _context_ for everything instead of painfully short Mission briefings and the final level made sense instead of recycling the Burma abattoir. Lost most of the cool music but the main game’s music is cool too, especially the tracks I recognised from GBA like Alert 1 and the X-Men cartoon style title theme (boss battle theme in the main game). I even got the PS2 version recently solely so I could play the original 3D Nuclear Plant mission from GBA and get better context for why Sam was there. Same with my bonus disk on Xbox for the submarine levels. Essentials is how I first saw Chaos Theory’s levels as well as the PS2 version of the Caspian Oil Refinery. Until I saw a PS2 playthrough, I thought the oil rig taking place at night unlike the original level was an Essentials thing and that the two Double Agent levels were taken directly from Double Agent version 2. Nope. The Essentials Prison and JBA HQ are unique to that game alone. I also played Essentials before Pandora Tomorrow on Xbox (tried a Turkish copy of the GBA version but didn’t get very far as saving didn’t work) so several things like the mine defusing puzzle, alarm system, title screen and death themes i retroactively recognised in Pandora Tomorrow from Essentials. Honestly I like Essentials despite the flaws you rightly pointed out (haven’t played it in years though) though I do hate the sloppy slideshow cutscenes and the final level for being too hard.

Although beyond the scope of this video, it’s worth mentioning that when looking back at the original Chaos Theory releases, the PS2 and GC versions were tangibly inferior to the Xbox and PC editions. On top of missing lighting effects and blurrier textures, several props and even huge chunks of scenery/geometry were omitted from the levels, making things seem less lived-in and dynamic compared to the more powerful machines. Having completed the PS2 game several times, this truly puts things into perspective.

Hey! I'm not sure if you're going to read this because it's an old video but I figured I'd comment anyways. This video was a nostalgic trip for me as I grew up playing Splinter Cell on the 3DS and eventually fell in love with stealth games in general. I'm really glad that I found your channel. I was also pretty disappointed that ubi didnt announce the new splinter cell but not even a teaser 😭 I mean there are so many clues scattered in the last two years over different games or interviews that at least a teaser should be here now 👿 on a last note: video games belong on proper like consoles or a pc. I first played Chaos Theory on the PS2, and I really hated the in-mission break up loading screens. Holy crap was I surprised when they remastered it for the PS3. It was so awesome being able to transverse a whole level without encountering a loading screen. I rarely break out my PS2 copy anymore. The bank level was probably the worst--after you rappel down, each of the two paths you encounter to progress forward gives you a loading screen.
@LongTimeAgoNL6 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah, The gamecube version also missed like 3 big levels as well. My friend had a gamecube and SC: Chaos Theory on it and I had it on the Original Xbox, we were discussing it and I told him this and that about a certain level and he was like "What the hell are you talking about? That was a cutscene" "The fuck, no it wasnt, it was a complete level" and then we compared games.

It'll have a ton of customization options and progression just like wildlands, only all the best looking and most desired cosmetic gear and tactical clothing will be blocked behind loot boxes and in game currency, again, just like wildlands. I'd honestly be willing to bet money that if a new splinter cell title is revealed, this is exactly what it's going to be

After watching both of your Splinter Cell videos, your opinions on the games are just about the same as mine. SC, SC PT and SC CT are permanently installed on my laptop (alongside NFS MW 2005 eheh). They are games I keep getting back to, and I've lost count on how many times I've completed them. I was a MGS fan on my PSone and had the opportunity to play SC on my cousins PS2 on weekends. I played the hell out of his game and was lucky enough to get a trilogy pack for PC somewhere in 2006(?) as a gift from my mom ,and playing all the games on PC for the first time was so great and they did not disappoint. Just a few months ago got a copy of SC 3D (to play at work eheh) and was really surprised by it despite the frame rate and the weird controls at first. Really enjoyed your videos and appreciated that you mentioned both Double Agent versions and explained the differences, as I've only played the PC version and was unaware until recently that PS2 and Xbox had a different game. Keep up with the good content. Cheers!

I think that Essentials really nailed that non-lethal animation though. lets face it, you're more likely to kill someone by choking them out than breaking their spine.
@mynthon04 жыл бұрын
I thought so too! So it might have been intentional. As a kid at least, the kill animation looked weird. I couldn't understand why Sam didn't just use his new (and high-tech!) knife to finish them off... like WTF!? You know, just like CJ in San Andreas! Actually, I still don't get it. Was the animation too gory? Would it have been too "unrealistic"? Like potentially too "messy" and loud, or something? Lol...
