I Really Wanted To Like This Game | Mario Strikers: Battle League

I'm a little late to the punch on this review, but I still wanted to share my thoughts on Mario Strikers: Battle League because it's a franchise I grew up with and hold very near and dear to my heart. Unfortunately, my nostalgic love for the originals couldn't quite save my opinion on this game...

this game is the epitome of Nintendo's string of recently released incomplete games. it's crazy how as you mentioned, there were SEVENTEEN different arenas to choose from in the wii sequel from FIFTEEN years ago, but now Nintendo is on a pump and dump streak. "Oh, people want this game? Let's get it out fast, no matter how incomplete of a state it's in, and just make corrections to it later." while this is prevalent in a lot of their new releases, people still buy the games. we can complain about their practices, but if we're feeding the machine, it'll keep pumping out unfinished projects. switch sports needs to wait MONTHS to add GOLF to their game mario kart DLC is coming out at molasses pace mario party for switch had a mere four boards, two being good, and added online play YEARS later mario party superstars pulled from its predecessors, and only has 5 boards when they had 25 to choose from. and the console they chose from was a much less selling console compared to the best selling switch mario golf had 4 or 5 blandish courses until they added 3 or 4 later with more flare (can't remember the exact number) and now this strikers game has a main menu and that's about it this string is in their games that are coming out recently. yes, they will be added later, but not sure if the interest will be there when months pass. it's funny how with better technology, Nintendo is skimping out on these games. and while we can say it's harder to produce games today, they are definitely more involved, for a studio like Nintendo that has all the manpower it needs to put out quality releases. we've seen them give us plenty of value in previous releases, so we know what they're capable of. it's troubling to see this trend unfold, yet people are showing with their wallets they don't mind.

Amen to that - I really shouldn’t have been able to use Mario Golf Super Rush and Mario Tennis Aces as GOOD examples in this video, because as you said, they weren’t necessarily gems at first. But the fact that I can put them next to Strikers and make them look like masterpieces really shows how undercooked Strikers really is. Also - we NEED more Mario Party Superstars boards!!!

The games A.I itself ruined this game for me. I cant even play this. Thank you for being open minded instead of being too dense to tell the game have problems. Im.trying to like this aswell but the A.I. is so bad. I'm still trying to figure out why they remove the captains and sidekicks route and have 10 characters and made all base characters captains and sidekicks. They shouldve stick with their old route.

Thanks, I try my best to be optimistic even with my more negative takes but sometimes it’s tough! I agree on the AI, that’s probably the main reason I haven’t given galactic mode an honest shot. It feels a bit unfair. I’m hoping future DLC helps this game a bit - but we’ll see, it might be an unsalvageable flop

For real - I wanna play as Chain Chomp and Spike and Petey Piranha and Monty Mole and Dry Bones and all of the other little oddballs. Even if I don’t pick one every time, it’s just nice to know they’re available, makes the game feel complete.

you know whats funny people say battle league is worse then aces and super rush i mean at the time no one was catching on to the free dlc but at least those games had decently big rosters at launch

That’s true! Even the base versions of those games had solid rosters compared to Battle League. I’m hoping the free DLC can at least double this roster.

I played over 80 hours of this game and I’m having a blast with it but I understand the little content thing but hopefully dlc is coming soon

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I truly do think the gameplay is awesome, it’s the cleanest Mario Strikers has felt. I’d be very surprised if there were no DLC, hopefully soon!

as annoying as nintendo dropping half-finsihed games i actually dont mind the Strikers situation that much, hear me out: -everyone seems to agree the gamplay and graphics are top not and while adding characters is much more of an ask with how the all have specificn animations/moves/balnces to gameplay its def still gonna happen so id MUCH rather have a game that plays 8.5/10 gameplay out the box, after some updates and some poss new mechanics (though there are hella deep mechancis to learn already, the gampley could be like 9/10 quality easily - then give it a few months to get more content (characters but id prefer more options like turning off hyperstrike animations and i think this game could go from what the community seems to think (ciritcs avged with gamers as about 6/10 up to 8.5/10) (for more content idk why for single player the offline tourneys are soooo short and so few - why not put you in an offline 'league' with say, 11 other AI teams then everyone plays everyone twice or whatever and then the top 2 teams with best records get a 'first round bye' and the next 4 best scores (so making top 6/12 gets in in playoffs) making up the play off tree, so the 3v6, 4v5 then the two winners face off with the #1 and 2 teams who had bye-weeks then the last two teams play in a 10minute final match or something crazy like that....so simple but would add SO much replay value!

Hey these are all great ideas! I agree that if the game gets all of that or at least something comparable to it added later, then it’ll be in much better shape. You’re right, the gameplay is so good that it can and should be salvaged! I just hope that the trend of launching games with less and adding more later doesn’t hold for every game going forward. The gameplay has its issues too.Getting goals seems too easy which doesnt make them feel rewarding. The AI teammates are dumb often ignoring item boxes/hyperstrike orbs right next to them only for opponent who was further away to take it and their positioning is sometimes bad too. Switching characters can be frustrating because it sometimes switches to character thats too far away rather than prioritizing the one closest to the ball. And stars are given way too often.If someone is losing by just one point he shouldnt be already getting star because star is essentially a free goal.

@@Marko-ij4vy There does seem to be some balancing issues with the AI - especially when you’re playing against a team on hard mode. It would be nice to have smarter teammates, but I guess to me it doesn’t feel too different from how I remember it being on GameCube and Wii so it hasn’t bothered me too much. Maybe it’s just been a while since I played the old ones for real though… The star thing is a definitely a problem that I’ve noticed too actually, the game would benefit from a patch for that eventually!

I gotta say... This game is a huge disappointment. I'm a huge fan of soccer (football to some), and I've never even heard of some of these players... Are they from some obscure league?? And the mechanics aren't very realistic. There's no way putting on a helmet makes someone faster. What a weird FIFA clone...
