You are aware of the song currently finishing and it was performed very well for high schoolers. You notice they ended before a popluarized solo... You've seen the film and brush it off... And then you hear the rapping begin... You think to yourself, "No child has actually tried to learn this solo" as you begin to reason your disbelief... The solo continues... Your eyebrows raise as you match the notes being played in your head with the child's. Perfection... You raise from your seat in awe and pride as you watch a young man pour his entire being into his recreation. That is why we teach, that is why we cheer

Yeah, Miles Teller was receiving drumming lessons for 4 hours a day to prepare him for his role in Whiplash. Whilst he tried to make the solo look as realistic as possible in the film, the audio you hear isn't actually his playing

tried doing some independence stuff like doing fast swing on hihat and ride but just like accenting randomly but kinda still musically the snare and toms. Hope that helps!

That was one of the most impressive and incredible things I’ve seen in while. My dad showed me the movie and I’ve rewatched it many times. He’s also frequently quoting things like “not my tempo” so it’s embedded in my brain. It would be fun to imagine you just did this on the spot but the effort it takes to memorize the solo is incredible…

As a musician who happens to suck at timing, I promise it doesn’t come off as random noises, but rather, brilliant work. It was awesome in the movie, but to see it recreated, and to see your hands move so fast that the frame rate itself can barely follow them, is fucking fantastic.
