I think turtles are the second most neglected pet the first one are fish species but yeah alot of turtle owners in my country keep baby turtles in those plastic "aquariums" with not even a filter and adults in 20 to 40 gallon tanks. One time i saw a turtle for sale with his aquarium and the turtle looked like he couldnt even turn around in his Aquarium and then it got sold, hopefully it was rescued and didnt just move to another location with the same terrible setup

Some turtle tips for you ;) You might want to put something under the floating dock to prop it up a bit so it doesn't sink when she climbs on it. Her belly/plastron area needs to get completely dry when she basks, otherwise you could start having more soft shell/shell rot issues....not sure if you're planning to get an above tank basking area (basking area that sits on the rim of the tank...not in the water), but those are great for larger turtles who might sink floating docks. Luckily the state of her shell doesn't look _terrible_ from the video, but she will definitely start looking better with proper lighting. Real sunlight is also really, really beneficial, so when it is warm enough, taking her out for 15-30 minutes a week (not too often so that she won't be continually stressed out) would also help improve her condition. Best of luck with your new shell baby, I know she'll have a great forever home with you!

Thank you!!! I do have a rock under the dock to hold it up. I'm getting a larger dock pretty soon that will support her better and I will most likely be getting an over tank basking spot for the 125 gallon. Thank you so much!!! (:

Don't know if you're familiar with Snake Discovery's channel but she makes turtle basking areas out of the egg crate style light diffuser. Which imo is an absolutely brilliant idea for in tank basking spot. PS Thanks for rescuing that turtle. They are such great pets. It's such a shame they so often fall into bad care.

this is why we need youtubers like you. I bet the owners knew that they weren't giving this turtle proper care, but I doubt they understood JUST HOW BAD it really was. And this is happening EVERYWHERE EVERYDAY, and people NEED to be more educated about the full extent of caring for a pet. people need to understand the responsibility. pets aren't home accessories, they are beings that need attention and care. people need to stop seeing pets as objects and more like a member of their family.
@eventhorizon5 жыл бұрын
I've seen turtles in far worse situations, looking at that setup, yes- it was pure hell, but it also looked like they tried. Clearly not enough to look stuff up- but I'd be willing to bet the internet wasn't as accessible when they got the turtle, they probably asked a pet store person what was needed (quality of info from pet stores can be really hit or miss, I've been to some where people knew their stuff), and when the turtle didn't die they thought it was ok... Though I don't think that explains having an animal who lives, eats, and drinks the water they sit in, in water that nasty to fester in... turtle water can get gross quickly, especially if you feed your turtle in it's tank, and maybe the filter recently broke and they just let it get out of hand. Not an excuse, but maybe it's the reason for the grossness. I've run into people who I told what they needed for various reptiles, and they roll their eyes and say they don't want to spend that much money on something that cost them (insert either a low price, or a high price already)... But I've also found so many people who found out they weren't providing their reptile/fish/small mammal with the proper conditions just didn't know- and they were all ears and sometimes even taking notes when given suggestions to how to affordably upgrade the care. (Craigslist can be perfect for getting supplies that would be much more expensive in stores brand new- but you need to make sure they're clean and disinfected first, and you need to know what was in them- some animals in tanks will make that tank just dangerous for fish for instance)
@SpinexF72 жыл бұрын
The owner was probably a dog person who thinks anything other than dogs is just a "decoration" and probably always lied he/she will upgrade the tank but like most people she probably never did that

That's awesome- I ended up with a dog with severe allergies and so much skin damage from mange the vet thought she would never grow her fur back and would just look like a rhino skinned dog (Thick and plated), but she was still so sweet, and playful, and full of love and fun I just felt hopeful for her from the second I saw her. I have friends who speak Hindi, and knew the Hindi word for "hope" was asha... I always felt it was a beautiful word for a beautiful sentiment, so I named her Asha. I think "Ora" is also along those lines, that would be my choice for the turtle if she were mine. Making a mental note of it, because that is really pretty word for something so meaningful and powerful.

Ok, not even joking, I also just rescued a yellow belly slider turtle (don't worry i've been doing a lot of research on how to take care of it). i don't know how old it is, but it's gone through 3 families that all took horrible care of it. it has soft shell disease and vitamin A and D deficiency. i took it to the vet a while ago and i got it a heat lamp and new food. the vet gave it a shot and it has been doing a lot better. i don't know its gender but i think it's a male, so I named him Bunsen. I hope your turtle gets better too, Tyler.

You should put rocks on the bottom not small enough for it to eat but not large enough for it to fall and slip on it helps for a little support and something to stand on on the bottom it helps when they're sleeping and helps when they're awake and it might even help her get on to that floating Rock another thing I do not suggest is not a floating Rock they might tip and it might fall something that you should maybe try is taking PVC tubing and make it into a square shape then put a piece of rock on top for it to climb up you might have to give it a little side rock to help it climb onto the new rock but it will help another things plants plants can help the turtle hide and feel more secure another thing is life food like fish it'll help it swim and give it more interest in being in a small tank all day

crested gecko crested gecko I’ve read in a couple places that you can offer wheat germ pellets (which are in certain Koi fish foods) with their diet and it helps a good bit, but I haven’t been able to try it yet. Just make sure your water quality is good and they have a basking area at correct temps where they can fully dry off. Being able to get dry is really important to get shed off, my rescue is already beginning to shed some as well after being in poor conditions where she wasn’t able to get dry. You can help the shed off if it’s VISIBLY about to some off, but never force it. If you come into any resistance, it’s just not quite ready yet.

According to some people, mostly PETA, even keeping animals as pets is animal cruelty. Or putting them in little animal clothes. Or forcing non herbivore animals onto a vegan diet. Or putting bread around your cats head. My point is just be sure you are picking the right battles to fight. I personally think it's perfectly fine to have pets. Some animals actually seem to enjoy wearing those little shirts and sweaters so as long as the animal seems ok with it than I am too. Do cats like having bread put around their head? Probably not but it's not hurting them any just annoying them a little. While my cats would never tolerate such things and I wouldn't try to do it I'm not gonna say someone that does do it is treating the animal cruely. The forcing animals to be vegan thing I do actually have issues with and would never do or recommend it. BUT if the animal is getting proper vet care, the vet says it's healthy, it seems healthy and happy and the owner is willing to go back to a more natural diet if the vegan thing isn't working then it's not something I'm gonna fight with someone about. Now if the animal obviously looked unhealthy then I would say something. Sometimes it's not even a matter of having to fight someone about it. Sometimes just politely educating works better.
@makanivalur6 жыл бұрын
myfrankensteinheart, I totally agree with all the points you made. Also sometimes it's a matter of learning with the animal. I used to be a total believer that clothes for animals are cruelty. Got a little dog who gets really cold in winter and starts shaking violently. Guess what? I bought a jumper for him and if I so much as pick it up he will run up to it and put his head through. Sometimes not knowing or caring about circumstances can make you the hypocrite. Wish I could take back all the harmful comments I made about people putting clothes on their animals now...
@bruixeria6 жыл бұрын
makanivalur often seeing things from a new perspective is the most educating experience. Taking care of any living creature is a constant learning adventure. Some animals like things that a lot of people would think are ridiculous. I think everyone makes mistakes sometimes when it comes to animal care even those that think they know everything about how a certain animal should be cared for. The important thing is that we learn from those mistakes and not just keep repeating them. I went through a whole thing where I realized my cats hated collars and felt bad for making them wear them for so long. It's like with this turtle in the video. We know nothing from the previous owners perspective. Do we know that it's conditions were always this bad? There was a filter in the tank and we don't know why it wasn't running anymore but it must have been in use at some point. Maybe the turtle was never a strong swimmer and they didn't feel comfortable adding more water. Maybe no one ever told them that the turtle needed a specific kind of light or a bigger tank. Since the turtle was alive they just figured it was doing ok. I'm sure they didn't know how bad this actually was for the turtle. Some polite educating could have been all this person needed had they not decided they just didn't want it anymore. Save the fighting words for those that truly deserve them is what I try to do. There are things people do with their pets that bug me but aren't really hurting the animal any. Then there are people that just need some extra help with knowing what they are doing wrong. Then there is just straight up not caring about your pets well being at all and this is the one I consider true cruelty. When they know full well that they are doing it completely wrong and don't care. Those are the people I save the fighting words for.

Well first advice I have (which I'm sure you already know) buy all that you can from chewy.com... It's much cheaper and literally arrives the next day. If you can't find aquatics that you need from there, check out doctors foster and Smith online they have great filters and plumbing etc for good prices. I've had my turtle for 7 years and she is about 9 inches long and none of the companies that make turtle docks make them strong enough to hold her ugh so I had to buy one for 90 DOLLARS on etsy.com that was made just for her. Turtles are the most expensive pet ever to be owned

KAYLEE YANG im sure rabbits are also freaking expensive. I had one as a kid but of course didnt take care of it because....i was a kid. My turtles tank cost me $300 😭😭 when I take my animals to schools to educate people everyone falls in love with my turtle and then start saying "now I want one!" And I immediately tell them the three reasons they don't. 1. Turtles can and will outlive their owner making them the most neglected pet ever. 2. They get BIG and big animals need big cages which=$$$ 3. The maintenance to keep them alive can be exhausting.

God bless people like you, for saving all helpless neglected animals. This is honestly one of the main reasons I watch your channel, because I love seeing people do good for the world instead of abusing poor animals.

I'm so glad you rescued her! She's beautiful. I've had a turtle for two or three years now - a beautiful male yellow bellied slider. I rescued mine from a tee shirt shop owner who kept him as a "shop pet". I talked her into allowing me to take him and give him a much better home. He's now happy, healthy and super active. He's a joy to have. Some advice: Since you have a large tank, you'll obviously need a large dock for her to bask on. Any hardware store such as Lowes, Home Depot, etc carry egg crate lighting panel for super cheap ($15-20 for I think it was a four by two and a half foot panel). You can cut it to fit your tank and create a wonderful diy basking area. I use suction cups to hold the dock up, with a little ramp to go into the water. Don't use a substrate that's small enough for your turtle to eat (mine roots around through the large pebbles/rocks I have in my tank to look for food that has sank). I recommend using two heaters, one on each side of the tank for even distribution of heated water. If she's food motivated, you can use a piece of food and teach her how to climb onto docks by holding it in front of her and allowing her to follow it onto the dock. It took my turtle weeks before he began using his new dock. I can't think of anything else as of now. But I'm so happy that she has a new and wonderful home! Good luck and happy turtle keeping! 💚🐢

You should call it Trooper. Because it's a trooper for surviving for a 12 years in such bad conditions. I'm so glad you rescued it. Turtles are not suitable for people who don't know how to take care of them or who aren't willing to do the proper research

Can’t see what videos you will make about him/her in the future!

The clips of the turtle trying to climb up on the basking dock was SO SAD. I kept on saying "come on, honey, you got this!" FYI, I highly recommend Honey as the turtle's name. We had a bottle calf when I was a kid that we named Honey because it was very sickly when we got it, and we kept saying "you can do it honey, come on honey", every time it took its medicine or had trouble eating, etc. He grew up to be fat and old, like I hope your turtle will be.

It’s so obvious Tyler cares about all animals, not just his own. He goes out of his way to help any animal he can and that’s so great💓

Sheesh you're amazing. I just love when people rescue animals. It gives me a slight bit of hope for humanity. I remember back when I rescued one of my horses. The feeling just felt great. Thank you for rescuing this poor turtle. Oh, and a possible name for her maybe Tortuga. It's turtle in Spanish. (So you won't really confuse her too much XD and it's also from Wild Kratts)

Awww, poor baby! I have a yellow belly turtle too and I rescued her off the streets. Thankfully we already had a 120 gal. filtered, fully lighted tank and turtle supplies! I know you did the right thing and are giving this turtle a better life.
