If you must wear gloves when using a buffing mop make sure they're close fitting, those ones you use are just asking to catch the mop and pull your hands into it.

I’d love to do this same finish in a studio design putter I recently purchased. Is it possible to replicate the same finish…. Blue neck with a gunmetal head? What kind of torch did you use? Sorry if I missed that. Lastly, what was your oil mixture? Awesome video! Subscribed!

This color is achievable on carbon steel heads. I used a butane torch!

I really enjoyed this clip, and I decided to follow your case with my old Scotty Cameron Tei3. But I have some questions: (1) Why beads blasting before torching? Would there be any difference in quality between with and without beads blasting before torching? (2) How long have you heated up the putter head with the heating gun before torching it. (3) What gas have you used in torching? Please, provide me with some tips.

Bead blasting smooths the minor imperfections in the putter that you may not be able to access with just the wheel. I usually heat up the putter head for about 5 minutes all over before torching, and use just a generic Butane torch you can buy at any hardware store.

I use 2 stroke motor oil blue dye) and penetrating oil. 50/50. SS won't produce the blues/purples, only carbon can get that range

Can I ask what grit deburring wheel you use? I want to try it in my own back garden in Ireland. I have refurbed and torched many a raw head wedge, but I think I need a little more refinement when trying a Scotty.

The torched finish that produces these colors only works on carbon steel, not stainless

Most Newer Scottie Camerons are stainless steel. You can do the same heat process with stainless steel and you don't need to quench it in oil because stainless will not rust.

Do you store your acetone in a paint can? Do you save it in that and reuse it as well. Starting to get into restoration and want to handle acetone appropriately. How do you end up disposing it?

I do! I use this to take off the paint before I start my restoration, but use fresh acetone when I'm doing cleanup on my paintfill. I store it in metal or glass containers. I'd check your local dump if they dispose of hazardous chemicals

If you skip the oil quench part you’ll have no penetration of oil in the surface to protect from moisture. Which will result in the chance of rust.

You can torch oil can it. Or gun blue it. I believe if your Bettinardi is made of soft carbon steel you can accomplish those finishes. You need to find that out first. If it’s stainless steel you could Powdercoat it.

Great video man and came out great. I don't think people understand how hard it is to get an even oil quench. I had some old oil can vokeys and tried a process called cold bluing. A process used on guns. It came out pretty good but the bluing wore off. Have you ever tried using the bluing liquid?

The oil can finish is basically black oxide but for less time. Typically hot blueing is like 30 mins.

I have an older Scotty Cameron Newport putter that I had sent back and had redone by Titleist a few years ago. I oiled it but it still rusted out after about a year. Is there any way or finish you can put on it that you don't have to oil it and don't have to worry about it rusting out? Is the process you showed here capable of that? I live in Canada by the way. Are you in Britain?

Hey James, we are living in South Carolina US. From Ireland originally. Yeah that can happen over time unfortunately because it’s carbon steel and prone to rust. We do a finish called powder coating, maybe that’s a finish you should look into, that finish doesn’t require oiling to protect from rust.
