In this episode I restore a yellowed retro joystick. The model is QuickShot Python 5. The controller is yellowed and even though it was sold as working to me on ebay, it turned out to be drifting to right.
I started with opening the controller and noticed I need to desolder the the wires to get all the pieces apart. After desoldering I cleaned the parts in watery soap and put them into my retrobrighting box to remove the yellowing.
Here is my tutorial to build it: • Making the Ultimate Re...
Here is my tutorial about the retrobrighting process: • How to remove yellowin...
I cleaned the board with isopropyl alcohol. However I did not remove the rubber pads for the buttons. This was because those can be very fragile and it would be extremely hard to find a replacement. But as you can see in the end, I still had to remove them and clean the contacts for the buttons.
To connect the joystick to a modern PC with new Windows such as Windows 10, you need a special adapter. I used this Rockfire adapter for gameport to USB (amzn.to/3wqtN9X). I have Windows 10 Home version 20H2, in this video in case someone has issues with this method. Just a Gameport to USB cable doesn't usually work.
Thank you for watching!

Do you have to dispose of the hydrogen peroxide every time? Or can it be reused?
@klfjoat
@klfjoat 2 жыл бұрын
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is unstable (as are all compounds with the prefix "per" in their name). Given time, temperature, and light, O2 will be given off at a lesser or greater rate, and it will degrade into water (H20), a much more stable compound. So the reality is that it will become water quickly enough that it should only be "reused" if he plans on doing one batch of plastic after another over the span of a few days.

Great restoration! I used to fix a lot of these back in the day for money, some of these had rubber cups on the tops of the joy fork to cushion and stop wear on traces. HaHa! I knew you were going to have trouble because you didn't clean the joy of pad contacts! They were always getting flaky after a lot of playing. 409 makes an excellent cleaner for plastics and cords, just don't leave it to soak usually. Seriously get a soldering station & learn how to do it correctly, I'm surprised it worked!

I have a gameport to USB adapter that I bought at Radio Shack about 20 years ago. Actually, I have three of them. I bought the first one, then decided that I should buy a couple backups (I'm not sure why now). The later ones were a slight different style, but otherwise functionally identical. They all have switches on them for two types of joystick, gamepad and racing wheel. In my experience, only simple, two axis, two button joysticks work. I've tried ones with hat switches, multiple buttons, etc. Anything even slightly fancy doesn't work, at least on the adapter I have.
