I got some of my KZbinr friends to join a Discord server. We tried to make each other laugh by taking panels from the Dragon Ball manga and extending them!

Um, actually, Toriyama made it Z because it's the last letter of the alphabet; and, around that time, he had wanted to end the comic. The anime staff that demanded the name change - because they wanted an image change- floated the idea of Dragon Ball 2.

It was just the anime staff that wanted to do a rebranding for the anime specifically because having it as a 'new series' would give them more allocated marketing budget. Plus there were a few major staff changes in the previous arc, so it'd help 'explain' to people why it felt a bit different.
