Hey James. I'm a native English speaker learning Spanish and I stumbled onto your vids. The title of this vid caught my eye because I've been hearing other native speakers take this mistake one step further. They say SEENT. "I SEENT it". Or "I SEENT him yesterday." Horrible, horrible English lol. I cringe every time I hear it. People don't realize how unintelligent they sound when they speak like this.

James..... I believe 'I've seen it' is pronounced as 'I seen it' (not grammatically correct anyway ) because people who usually 'slang' the American English omit certain words because of how fast those people speak. For instance ' what did you say' is spoken as ' what you say/ whatchu say'..........That doesn't make it wrong so long as its recognized accepted and used among Americans

If you've lived a situation that repeats itself "have seen it' explains it better. For example: I saw you in that bar X I've seen you in that bar. The first on tells you were there one time for sure. The second suggests you were there more than once.

Native English speakers make grammar mistakes all the time. It's really not that much of a big deal, in my opinion. Native speakers of English aren't going to speak slowly and clearly with perfect grammar for learners.
@richwicz9 жыл бұрын
Why, I'm just stating a fact. Native English speakers aren't going to slow down their speaking to accommodate non-English speakers. Why should they? If you can't understand a native speaker because they talk too fast and occasionally make grammar mistakes then that's your problem.
@johnnylee41359 жыл бұрын

Guido B have seen suggests a continuous action of seeing. saw on the other hand suggets the opposite. you saw it end of story. so I'd say no you can't use seen instead of saw. at least in most cases and if there's any exception I'd tell you not to use it if you're insecure.

If you are going to teach a particular genre of communication or a particular variant of English (General American I guess), you ought to be explicit about that - rather than demeaning fully functional variants of English. One would expect as much from a person claiming enough proficiency to actually teach the language. It is really backwards to think of removing regional variance as "cleaning up our language". (On a side note: many regional variants of English have the possibility of expressing modalities not possible in Standard English grammar.)
@teo51466 жыл бұрын
Erik Nilsson 1) No, not really, he doesn't need to clarify what variant he teaches because it would be wasting valuable time, you can just read his about page. Besides, it's not like you are entitled to that explanation, truly. 2) It's never clear what general American is. There is no general consensus. I have a fairly standard American accent, yet I may pronounce some words slightly differently. 3) «Claiming enough proficiency»? .... No words.

AAVE (or African American Vernacular) is a unique dialect of American English with it's own grammar rules, not just "stupid mistakes" as you simply put it. There is nothing wrong with "I ain't that good" it's just not standard English. Obviously, I understand as an English teacher you would need to the standard English, just dismissing AAVE as just "stupid mistake" is off putting and just plain incorrect. I also really cringe when I hear people describe the area where poor people of color live as "the ghetto". Can we stop doing that, god!
