Even if it does actually fund (and it probably will), I'll kind of be surprised if it actually gets released, considering double fine's track record with this sort of thing.
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
+Bob Woggle That is a danger. I'm sure they were looking forward to a Shenmue level of support and I'm actually amazed it hasn't received that. That could very well affect the scope and completion of the game, which is sad but it is reality.

+Bob Woggle Track record? They released everything
@BobofWOGGLE9 жыл бұрын
thatsage TN They got well over their goal with broken age, and still ran out of money half way and had to release it in halves, using the profits from the first half to fund the second, then for df-9 they abandoned it and released the code for the community to work on when the game was still not complete, and they got well over the goal for that, too. That's the track record I'm talking about.
@nitaiginzburg86899 жыл бұрын
They ran out of money because they resigned the game with every kickstarter goal reached. The game they couldn't make was hardly anything like the original they planned on. Still, part 1 and part 2 were released and were both critically well received. DF-9 didn't sell enough. It's as simple as that. It was an early access title that depended on the funding of early access adopters, and there weren't enough. They didn't get any "well over the goal" for this, it wasn't even on kickstarter. So their track record shows one early access game that didn't sell enough to be developed to completion. Is psychonauts early access? No.
@BobofWOGGLE9 жыл бұрын
thatsage TN df-9 was crowd funded as well, again well over their goal, and they ran out of money, I'm just saying they've got a bad habit of running out of money after already getting more than they asked for.

This is a super insightful and well put together video. Excellent job. The amount of controversy surrounding this game is very disappointing.
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
+asdf4455Gamez It's disappointing because I did enjoy the original. Some of the controversy is unwarranted and I won't get into that. But there are some errors in their pitch that are probably affecting this campaign, like the lack of physical console options and not really doing any prep work other than a CGI trailer.

I see. Well, you've certainly exposed many truths regarding game related projects and the games industry as a whole, and that's a lot more than I get over at Polygon or Kotaku...
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
David Lee I'll be honest, there was a time when I got ALL of my gaming news from Kotaku. Man that was bad, lol. Nowadays I only visit once a week to see what's trending in pop culture, they're not news. Especially their vendetta against Bethesda, for which they still make articles on a near daily basis. Polygon still has some respect from me because their in depth features and "cover story" are well done. Their recent coverage of the Iranian games industry is incredible. But otherwise their content is just shady advertising, it's disgusting. A lot of my sources during my coverage of Fig came from them because they basically became Fig's PR department. Mark my words: in the next few years we'll see a news story break where we find out that Polygon has been writing sponsored articles and not disclosing it.

Great job on catching that little miscounting of investments detail. I spent ages looking into the Psychonauts 2 Fig campaign and I'm kicking myself that I missed that one thing. As for your worries about getting nasty comments that you mention in one of your replies here, that'll happen anyway. Good news is they won't be as bad as you thought they would be. Keep up the good work. :)
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
+Bitscreed Thank you. It's a relief to see more support than I expected. And yeah, I actually don't have a problem with the games or devs that go to Fig (except that free to play one was a pretty stupid idea) but the site itself is clearly designed to inflate funding figures and I can't sit still while that happens.
@Bitscreed9 жыл бұрын
I wonder if Fig will make a statement about the funding figures inflation. There was a similar issue near the start of the campaign where the deadline suddenly gained a few days. Fig said that a bug with the site's backend and claimed the campaign was always intended to last 40 days. Regarding the games that've been on Fig so far, I genuinely quite like what I've seen of Outer Wilds!
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
+Bitscreed I wonder if anyone will ask about in tomorrow's AMA. Outer Wilds looked great! I'm a complete space trucker so that really would be the game for me. Unfortunately my little laptop wasn't powerful enough to run the game at full speed and that's the only thing that kept me from pledging. I will definitely consider buying it when it comes out but knowing me I'll just wait for a Steam sale.

+John Anderson (Photardshop) He's made some bad decisions with his crowdfunded games, which is territory where you really have to be walking on eggshells. I think the consequences of those choices are coming back to haunt him with this campaign. I'm very surprised it's doing so poorly with rewards backers. I would have expected it to do better than Yooka-Laylee at least. But a campaign like that, or Shenmue 3, or Bloodstained shows how far your fanbase can take you when you haven't used up your good will. I think the only person worse off than Tim right now is Keiji Inafune.

IIRC, they announced that Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin (the PlayStation VR exclusive) is the conclusion to the first game's cliffhanger, and Psychonauts 2 takes place after that. Still, this is a pretty worrying thing I didn't know about Fig!
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
+VenusyPrime Ahhh, okay! But you see, I've tried to follow this campaign closely and I still didn't know that. Common sense would tell me Psychonauts 2 picks up after 1. @LordArikado6 жыл бұрын
See, that's something that I never understood. Why would they not have Psychonauts 2 pick up where Psychonauts 1 left off, and instead have that cliffhanger resolved in a spinoff game with no marketing push that requires an expensive VR headset to play? It would be like Capcom reviving Mega Man Legends 3, only for it to open with Mega Man already back on earth and the whole situation with the Elder System solved.

Here we are 1 year later, and Well, progress seems to have been made. They met their crowdfunding goal, picked up a publisher, Starbeeze Studios, and have an announcement on the fig page posted in February of 2017, so i honestly think that this game may just come to fruition, whether or not it happens on all the platforms they want which is pretty much everything minus nintendo, or their estimate of 2018 is everyone's guess. Personally I didn't get into psychonauts, and can tell you nothing about it. I just honestly felt like leaving this because i enjoyed this video and wanted to post on updates that were made or not made.

@wsl1079 жыл бұрын
You know double fine did this on purpose, because as soon as it reached its goal raising your pledge became available. That shows that double fine isn't that sure about the money and how big of a hand they have in the fig site.
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
+wsl107 Yeah, for a while in the early drafts of my script I was going to mention that I can't even adjust or delete my "pledge" so it wouldn't skew the numbers. Then again, they explained the extra days added to the campaign as a coding error or something and I can't wait to hear what the excuse is for this if/when they get significantly less money than they expected. Also, on a funny note, I was actually considering sending this video to you first to review it and tell me if I went too far. But then I realized- wait... even if you tell me I did go too far I'm still going to release it after spending so many hours making it!
@wsl1079 жыл бұрын
If I say it went too far, than it must be really bad because I never get offended by something or see why others could be offended or angred by it. Halfway trough I was thinking "Wasn't this the video he was affraid to publish because of the consequences?" Because I really couldn't see why this video would be getting hate, apart of fans of psychonauts/double fine. But even then, how the site fig works is a fact, so I don't see how they could argue. That is until fig or doulbe fine give some more transparency. So for the future you know my answer: Publish it! ;)

+Rannos22 I don't know if he's a straight con-man, but he does have a bad habit of not thinking a few steps ahead. I too don't have a lot of faith in them recapturing the magic of what made the original Psychonauts so great. Double Fine just isn't the studio we used to know.

+StopDrop&Retro Have you ever watched the documentary made by 2 Player Productions alongside Broken Age? It gives you (Probably unintentionally) a lot of insight into the man and how he thinks and works. I err more on the side of him thinking too big, having little concept of reining in a project to realistic goals and planning ahead (or lack thereof) like an idiot more so than intentional conning. When it comes to projects he comes off in the documentary as essentially an earnest, but completely incompetent kid who wants everything to be his dream project.

I think you make a lot of good points in your video, FIg just seems a little sketches to me. I do find it amusing you're getting upset about it being potentially PC exclusive. Shall I list all the PS3 and 4 titles that we would have LOVED to get on PC but "the demand wasn't there", some other non existent reason, or the game was just being used as a selling tool for the console. I'll admit it undermined the message of your video for me, you have a very good solid, strong point that people need to be aware of if they want to back this game but then you bring in an unrelated issue that isn't even remotely on the scale of the main point..
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
+Dostro89 It was an unrelated point, I fully admit that. Most of the video was about my concerns about whether the funding numbers are accurate. But I felt the need to go off topic and explain specifically why, as a big fan of the original Psychonauts, I didn't plan on backing on the reward level at all. I prefer play on modern consoles because I'm a filthy lazy casual and I usually never have access to a powerful PC.
@Dostro899 жыл бұрын
Trust me I know where you're coming from, being on the other side of the street exclusives still make me very sad. It just didn't fit the video or the tone you were going for and distracted from your true point. As someone who has back many projects on Kickstarter and Indiegogo this point makes me very nervous about FIg, enough to not use the platform.

Stumbled upon your videos during the Retro VGS debacle and subscribed thinking this channel has potential to deliver some great content in the future. The thought of you starting to pander to "this" audience never crossed my mind, are you sure that you want to be associated with DangerousAnalysis and Bitscreed? And why are you using the flame-shield, that is something which belong to silly console warring "I own console XXX but", not something one do if one has faith in one's arguments. I myself am no fan of Psychonauts, I've never played the game nor have I ever backed any of Doublefine's projects, but even I know that what happened between Psyconauts 1 and 2 is being made as a PS4 exclusive VR game and that the first game is being re-released on the PS4. What I mean is that you shouldn't claim to be a fan who follows the situation, when non fans know more, it is the danger of using the silly flame-shield, please try to be better than that, just cut to the chase. Of course you have no reason to listen to me, I just hope that you know in which direction you want to take your channel and if the audience you managed to get from this video actually is the audience you are targeting?
@StopDropRetro9 жыл бұрын
+OctaBech I have every reason to listen to you, I read every comment and try to respond to each because I respect my audience. However, I am not pandering to any audience except my own. I only have two requirements to make a video- 1) it has to be interesting to me; 2) it has to be interesting to my audience. There are some groups that will be drawn to a certain video, but I'm not pandering to them. In fact, this video is a continuation of my coverage of Fig, which I was covering and criticizing well before this new group latched on to it so they could hate on Tim Schafer. The subject of Fig is interesting to me and after judging the response from the first video I felt my audience had an interest as well. I know GG people have come out of the woodwork with this video and honestly, I did not expect that. It didn't happen with my first Fig video so I didn't expect it to happen here, it was a total surprise. Those people may have an unpopular opinion but I'm not about to block them or delete their comments because tolerance is a two way street and I knew when I started making these opinion videos that I would get some comments I don't agree with. In fact, I'll be honest with you right now- I don't agree with either side of that argument. I think both sides are completely toxic. People who take the time to attack others online because of it have way too much time on their hands... and when you hear that from a guy who reviews Chinese crapware you know you have a problem. As for my "shield" you're correct, it was a defense because (as I clearly explained in the video) I expected people to claim that I made the video because I was a Tim Schafer hater or not a Psychonauts fan. I love Psychonauts and I think Tim did an incredible job on it, I would recommend that game to anyone. My criticism is with Fig. But that part of the video was just explaining why I wouldn't be supporting the game itself. In fact, in Monday's AmA, they claim Psychonauts 2 takes place "hours" after first. So in my mind it's still up in the air, I don't know what to think about it but I don't have to because I didn't support it. So TL;DR- Yes, it was a "shield" because I felt people would interpret my video as being anti-Psychonauts/Schafer and I even talk about that fear in Part 1 of my 1,000 Subs Special, I expected this video to be hated. But no, my video was not made to pander to the GG crowd nor do I take a side on that matter, but I will tolerate others having an opinion on it. I know some videos won't appeal to you and you should know that I have some subs who find the Retro VGS coverage to be incredibly boring and they just want me to do more hardware reviews. But that's just what comes with covering a variety of subjects that interest me and having a diverse audience. Maybe this video rubbed you the wrong way but another Retro VGS opinion video in the future will be just what you're looking for. Thank you for watching and thanks for your comment.
