This is one very few of what I would describe as a 'high quality' KZbin channel. Your enthusiasm is infectious. I hate to be that guy but as soon as you installed that old mainspring I thought no, that thing needs to go. The reason being is how off center the center twist in the spring was. That's a significant amount of side load being applied to the arbor which is not only bad for wear but also means friction robbing it of power. So even if the spring otherwise still worked fine, it wasn't going to run as good as it should. You'll notice when you put the new spring in, that center twist was pretty much perfectly centered over the hole, allowing the arbor to just drop right in without any side load. On another note, last time you did that chrono, I got really excited because I hoped that meant you were ready to tackle more chronos in the future and here we are. Love this watch. Can''t wait to see you tackle a Daytona and/or Zenith.

If you have ever watched his videos you would have seen multiple restorations where he says that keeping the watch all original is important to him. This includes the main spring.

@michaeldimmitt21883 сағат бұрын
I always wonder that too. When I saw him holding the mini broach I remembered going to USC School of Dentistry (as a patient not a student) and they would use a similar tool to hand drill out the nerve tissue from the roots of a tooth getting a root canal and a cap. I think I saved one that hit the floor and never got used. Still might be in a toolbox somewhere!

I think we love Heuer for the same reason. I got my first Tag/Heuer nearly 30 years ago, and even though it was quartz, I still felt connected to the brand and its racing heritage. I love that you made this specific video about a watch with such historic significance. I too have been waiting to get a Heuer chronograph, and while I now have a few Tag/Heuer chronographs, and even a Heuer 2000, I still want a classic 60s chrono! Thank you for the gift of this video and the journey you took us through during its attainment, restoration and your obvious bonding with your new watch! Recently, I was visiting a good friend who lives aboard his late-1960s 50 foot wooden cabin cruiser. While admiring the instrumentation in the pilothouse, I noticed a chronograph on a nickel plated base mounted to the bulkhead alongside comms equipment. Upon further examination, it turned out to be a Heuer Monte Carlo circa 1968, original to the construction of the yacht. At first, I thought that it was a handheld chrono that someone modified, but quickly realized that it was sold by Heuer ready to mount to a dashboard or binnacle. It's a lovely example, and while the tritium painted lume no longer glows, the dial has a commanding presence with bold (faded orange/off-white Arabic numerals on black. My friend has never used the chrono during his several years of ownership, but there was still power in the main spring. With a little wind, it timed within a fraction of a second/margin of error to a stopwatch app over the period of an hour. My friend was delighted to learn more about the timepiece and its automotive racing pedigree. I expect it will see a service soon now that he knows what it is.

The super glue method worked for me every time. It's not rust that's got that case back jammed up, it's the fossilized gasket. The great part about this method is that a hobbyist already has most of the stuff needed on hand. The only specialized thing needed is a case vise. I bought a case vise online for less than $10.

I should comment from my official page, too lazy to sign out and sign in.. Greetings from Kawartha, Ontario. I've enjoyed your videos for a few years now. But seeing this, I just had to comment. I'm 51, my oldest brother is 72. When I was about eight years old, I saw this watch in one of my brothers automotive magazines. I was obsess with this watch. I circled it in crayon. I still have that magazine. Fast forward to 1998, I was working in production. On my break, I walked into a high end watch dealer here in Toronto's Yorkville area. There it was the exact watch you're working on. I paced back and forth, pondering. I never ended up eating lunch cause I spent the whole time contemplating should I purchase it. It was quite expensive, in the thousands.. With 10-15 minutes left on my break, I finally, said the hell with it, and I purchased it. To this day, 26 years later, it has never failed me. Cheers!

Oddly enough, the 60's Carrera was one of the watches that I too lusted over when I first got into the hobby. I almost picked one up in the late-2000's for $3000. Congrats on getting your dream watch, Marshall!! I started working on pocket watches based on your suggestion and really appreciate it (although I would warn that so many have broken balance staffs it might not be the best place to start). As a pilot, what we love is the sort of chronograph that DOES allow resets from the running state as we use the watch to time things like holding patterns where we aim to hold in 5 minutes but don’t need to read the exact time, but restart for the next hold. This is called a flyback chronograph. They tend to be more expensive than sports chronographs. I guess from watching this that they would need to be more strongly made? The only one I know of, for sure, in a wristwatch, is the Breguet Flyback, though they were quite available in a pocket format back when we used mechanical chronographs rather than the electronics of a modern cockpit. Brilliant video, as always.
