I wish I would've watched this video a year ago... it would've saved me - not only from overspending on ads (knowing myself I still would've overspent but not as much :P) but - also from the time & energy I spent worrying/feeling ashamed that my ACOS isn't steadily under 20% . Thanks for sharing this Chris!

Chris you're just the most honest, earnest and knowledgeable publisher in the space. I have felt the getting burnt by ads first hand and watching this video now reminded me to dial back some of my bids for some older books, because like you say, why am I running them? What's the strategy behind it. Fantastic video and I'll be adding this to a playlist on my channel (if you don't mind)

I'd love to see someone like you take on a subscribers book, run the ads for it to show that it is actually possible for everyone. Think it would make a good video.

Ads are weird sometimes. My ads for the US are doing great in a very competitive niche and I am making sales but my ads for Canada are a huge flop and they are the same ads with the same budget created. One thing I have learned after plugging away at this for many months is for seasonal books you need to start getting ranked far in advance to when they sell the best. For instance you should be starting to try to get ranked now for back to school books and creating Halloween right now to start pushing them in September and same for Christmas. Good books take awhile to make and ranking on Amazon can take some time to figure out by tweaking ad spend here and there. You want to maximize those sales when they are at their best. It's a competitive market but you are right in that you can rank in compeitive niches if everything is on point. Your ads, cover, interior, A+ content etc. All of it has to be on point.

Hey Chris. I've been following you for a while now and I must say that I really love the way you break things down in your videos. Your teaching style makes it really easy for one to follow and grasp whatever you're talking about. Please I'll like to get your advice on a book I recently published just two weeks ago. I aggressively ran ads to the book in its first week in both the US and UK marketplaces and got some sales (around 10 in the first week and 8 in the second). However, the amount I was spending on ads was becoming too much for me to afford so I turned off the ads for a while to just cool things off a bit. I turned the ads back on a couple of days ago but surprisingly the book just stopped selling altogether. People still click on my ads but they just stopped buying. I still cannot figure out why because I did not change a single thing about the book (not the price nor A+ content nor its description; nothing). It just seemed like people generally just lost interest in the book. And, the book is not a seasonal book. It's a how-to-draw book for kids. I don't know if there's any advice you can offer to me going forward. Thanks and good job with the videos!

Good info as usual. Is it safe to say that sometimes even with best efforts its still up to chance? Also is there a stragety for folks that dont have a ton for a budget? Like i know chances are better if you have more to invest but if you dont you dont.

I agree with you that making direct profit from ads is hard even for higher content books which I write and typically priced at 12.99-13.99. The aim is to boost organic sales which is easier throughout the year but very difficult in Q4, I find.

Hi! Do you have a video already explaining if you should or should not publish different books under same author name? I want to publish prompt journals, coloring books, activity books, and garden tracking books. I notice that most authors stick to just one thing, like just coloring books. If you do not have that video already can you please make a video explaining why or why not and how? If you keep it under one author name, does Amazon or KDP offer subcategories on the author page? Do they allow you to have more then one author name for each book type? I have my first book waiting to be publish, I have a proof on the way to approve before it goes live. Thanks in advance! Have been binge watching all your videos and love how transparent and knowledgeable you are.

Love the video Chris. But one thing I'd like to understand better is how much sales per day affects ranking and how much sales over time. If I sell two copies every day my bsr won't change but will I slowly rank in my keyword? Or do I need to sell 4 copies, 8 copies per day? And if it's the latter how do you manage that with a fixed daily budget? Because until you start selling organically your sales per day is going to be tied pretty closely to your budget isn't it? This was a great video but I wish it had gone into more of this sort of nitty gritty. Thumbs up.

Once you rank the books if you turn off the campaigns, they start to go down in ranking? I mean if I rank in the top 5 with campaigns if I then turn off the campaigns is it possible that the book is getting more and more lost?

Hi Chris. Is it okay to have one keyword that is converting good sales but turn off all the other keywords that havent converted any sales? My question is, is it enough to have one keyword that is making good sales, or should i try to apply more? 🤔

I run insane ads the first few weeks and then optimize it almost day by day. I almost always lose money in the ads but make the real amount of money in the organic sales. It’s hard to track with KDP since I have to jump back and forth but checking keyword ranking and such is super important. I have seen one of my books skew totally left field from one of my keywords only because the ads ran so many leg variations on some of my keywords. But then it became a number one bestseller after a week so that was interesting. Love the vids.

Excellent video! Thank you for sharing this. If you haven't already made one, maybe a video on how to factor in the Christmas season. Do I as a new seller need to customize ads early for certain books that might sell better during that season? If so how to go about that. Also as a new publisher I haven't experienced the Christmas season yet. What can I expect?

Excellent video Chris! Interesting that you mentioned going into less competitive niches for beginners (I mentioned this before and caught flack but oh well). I do believe that most of us start off running ads want to be profitable... and this is possible but.. for a new book ...yea it will take time. I think people want results in days and it just doesn't happen like that. It definitely takes a lot of testing and tweaking to find what works. Anywho.... great content. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Chris, fantastic video, so helpful for us newbies! Question: I can’t work out where or how I see what keywords my Auto campaigns are using that are successful. I like your strategy of setting an auto campaign, monitoring, then drawing out the successful keywords from that and creating a new campaign around them. But all I can see is Close Match, Loose Match, Substitutes and Complements. Can you tell me where you go to actually see the keywords AMS Auto is using? 😃

Hi Chris, Good video. I am not able to understand the maths behind the profit. The average book prices on Amazon are from $7.99 to $11.99. As per the KDP royalty calculator the pure royalties range from $2.25 to $4.50- $5 max. If you run ads then the minimum CPC is about 0.5 cents (amazon suggests a $1). Avg conversion rate is about 10%. That means after 10 clicks (or $5) I might get one sale if everything is in place. How can one earn a realistic profit with KDP?
@ChrisRaydog

Organic sales should make up most of your profits so ad spend doesn’t factor in there 😎

It would be sales that are not in your ad reports I would guess. If you go into your ad marketing campaigns it will show what sales you have made. And your reports will show total sales so you can figure out that way.
