I Spent a Week Eating Singaporean Food in Tokyo

Earlier this year, we sent our producer, Pei Fang, to Tokyo for a work trip. But instead of working, she went to meet fellow Singaporeans to eat and review Singaporean food like laksa, kaya toast and chicken rice. Do these dishes live up to the expectations of Singaporeans abroad?

Do try Mr. Chicken at Gotanda, the Singapore chicken rice is very flavourful. It's paired with tasty clear soup and chilli . The rice served there is very fragrant. In fact, we often buy the 5kg jasmine rice grain back to cook. It's sold at the counter. Getting other types of rice besides the usual Japanese grains in the supermarkets is difficult . Laksa is another tasty dish here. I often also have the fried tung hoon. 😮(mung bean clear noodle). They also serve chilli Kang Kong (morning glory) n other Asian dishes.

The salary is lower compared to SG and the income tax is high in Japan which is true as mentioned by the guy. I travel a few times a year to our local office paid by the company.

Totally agree that it's so hard to find authentic Singaporean food in Japan... Ive been here for 7 years but so far have only been met with disappointment. Hope theres at least one on this list that reminds me of home😔

Nah...living in Tokyo is definitely NOT expensive. At all. It's waay cheaper than my own hometown, Zurich. Everything is much more affordable here in Tokyo than in my own hometown( which is good but also in a way quite sad ).

if i were abroad, i wouldnt choose to eat singaporean food. its the best time to explore new culture and cuisine, no need to latch on to familiarity.

if i may share. perhaps the meat they use it different but i fondly remember eating sweet and sour pork in the UK and chew for such a long time on it that the sweet and sour flavor was gone XD
