I'm breaking it down the dollars and cents it took to compete at Miss USA. Follow‪@DaniWalker‬ on IG for more!
I created this episode to give you a deeper look in to the world of pageantry. After reviewing my 2017-2018 budgets, I realized that I spent over 20,000 during my year at Miss Montana USA! I was pretty surprised by this number and frankly it's on the conservative side. I'm sure there's other expenses I forgot to calculate.
My hope is for this episode to help other contestants plan ahead for their pageant budget, whether they are competing at Miss USA, or any other pageant. I also thought it would be a fun episode for pageant fans, to see behind the curtain of pageant prep for one of the world's most popular pageants. It can provide some insights into why your favorite contestants may have a disadvantage at Miss USA, while other states seem to have a "sash factor" in their favor. The reality is not so black and white, as you'll see in this episode.

Sometimes I wish they would just a sponsor that designed the gowns for the girls to wear. Miss France usually has all the girls compete in the same gown during the finals. It really becomes about the girl.

Kristopher Campbell I’ve been saying this... but I think the girls should all wear opening number in the same style just different colors and for final question look etc they should put back on their opening number dress so they’re crowned wearing Sherri but let the girls wear whatever they want for evening gown

being a titleholder is a huge honor which is NOT about the money, obviously. But it really makes me sad to see so much coming out of pocket!! It quite literally prices girls out, or could even put them in debt :( I wish there was something the organizations could do to support the girls financially a bit better. Titleholders have given their heart and soul for the pageant and they totally deserve it.

Some state pageants cover almost all costs for their contestants national expenses. But since Montana residents aren't huge supporters of the pageant contestants, more money comes out of pocket. Like I said, because this was a huge dream of mine, I saved a lot in advance to cover expenses.

So... Miss America is a non-profit. They don't typically charge a sponsorship fee but they do ask contestants to raise a certain amount for the Children's miracle network. When I attended Miss USA I didn't pay a sponsorship fee to enter, our state directors cover that as a part of our prize package. And yes lol, things have changed in pageants since 1983.

If you think of it in terms of daily needs such as food, the wardrobe expense wasn't too drastic. There are 365 in a year so therefore as a brand rep of Miss USA it costs about $23 a day to wear clothing representative of the system and your own personal brand. Since Miss USA is known be updated on current fashion, styles and trends it makes sense that you would need to update wardrobe regularly to stay on trend and you could consider each new outfit to represent 1 day of the year and feel better inside knowing that all it takes is $23 a day to stay up to date. Also if you re sell those items within the next year or so (which should be quite easy if you have only worn them for one appearance) you can make back at least a quarter of the money you spent if not half and you reduce your expenses down to app. $10 a day. Hopefully my reasoning makes a little sense.
@DaniWalker
@DaniWalker 4 жыл бұрын
lol, it makes sense. The food I mentioned was only what I spent at appearances, like what I ate when I was at NYFW. Not what I was spending for weekly groceries, which was pricier because I only ate fish for and veggies before Miss USA.

I think the national pageant should have a spend cap for the cost of the evening gown to make competition more level across the board to help with the non-"pageant states." Afterall, it should be about "the girl wearing the dress, not the dress wearing the girl."

Well you can't exactly tell someone that there's a limit to what they can spend from their own money. But now at Miss USA all contestants are required to wear a Sherri Hill gown, so that's leveled the playing field.

I remember competing at CA USA, it was $1,800 plus we were required to buy the Sherri Hill opening dress which was somewhere between $100-200. That's why it took me 5 years to compete at state. I'm not sure if this is a good idea but MUO/IMG could make the Miss USA competition into a reality show similar to pageants Nuestra Belleza Latina and Mexicana Universal on Univision. The girls could earn money from the show in prime time get more exposure through sponsorship and endorsements but my reservations is how the girls could be portrayed. Kenya Moore is the most successful former USA in reality TV but she has reputation good and bad. Americans do love a show and bringing pageantry back to prime time throughout the year could elevate the girls more and their causes. I would watch but no rachetness lol.
@DaniWalker
@DaniWalker 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe someone could just create the American equivalent of Nuestra Belleza for TV, without putting USA on the show. I think it'd change how state pageants were run because it'd just turn into a casting and I think it might severely effect results. But I do like the idea of a pageant type show on TV. Maybe that's the direction Miss America should have taken. It seems they tried but it's not executed well.

In Colombia, the organization does not help in the process of competition economically or catwalk or preparation, what if there are regional organizations where each region is different, for example there is the Miss Valle del Cauca, Atlantico, where they support their queens, giving them until the dress of the final night, while other regions there is no support at all and so it is very difficult for girls, and whoever the queen 👑 has the right to go to Miss Universe and there if they give financial support. it's all the little numbers that all add up...would you ever do it all again knowing this is the amount going in? also have you listened to allie gonzalez's podcasts/year recaps yet? if you had a terrible director like that, would you have also made sure you did things your way you were comfortable with?
@DaniWalker
@DaniWalker 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'd still do it if I knew about the expenses. When I was growing up, we didn't have a lot. I struggled for everything and worked hard because one family friend told me to never let money stop me from pursing my dreams. It's not impossible to overcome financial obstacles. I knew that, so I prepared for the year. I haven't heard about her director, but I have to say that mine we so incredibly supportive and kind. I love them and consider them family now. They're literally heaven sent.

Its so stupid that they give sponsorships outside the state
@DaniWalker
@DaniWalker 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. A lot of businesses that sponsor contestants or pageants have many customers that travel from out of state to them. For example Henri's cloud nine is one of the best gown stores in the US. They sponsor various pageants, outside of Ohio, because it promotes their business beyond their state. It's a big reason why many contestants, my client's included, will drive or fly to Henri's for their wardrobe. It's also very common for contestants to fly or drive to pageant headshot photographers, because so few of them exist in the US. So it makes a lot of sense for photographers to sponsor multiple state pageants. They know that it's very likely that those pageants contestants, will hear about them, travel, and book their services later. It makes business sense to share about your business, or serve those outside of your state because more potential customers, means greater chances of increased profits.

Out of curiosity, is amount you make as a title holder enough to cover these expenses? I'm sure a lot of girls spend way more than this!
@DaniWalker
@DaniWalker 4 жыл бұрын
You don't make money as a titleholder typically. I've heard from some other titleholders that their directors were able to help them find a few events that paid them to attend, but that's not the norm. It's all volunteer based. That is why I encourage titleholders to use their year to prepare for life after their title. Most don't think that far ahead and take advantage of the opportunities during their year.

You could, but ever since sherri hill was the sponsor, the queens won in her gowns. Others got close but never won. Then MUO decided to make all contestants wear Sherri Hill. Now you can’t buy other designers. 2018 was the last year.

Which states cover most of the expenses?
@DaniWalker
@DaniWalker 4 жыл бұрын
For example, Tennessee covers a lot of expenses. One of my friends who was their queen said, she she didn't pay a dime for appearance wardrobe or Miss USA wardrobe. She also got hotels covered for appearances. Things like that make a huge difference. I'm not sure what else they pay for.

Hi Dani!! Aloha from Hawaii. Thank you so much for your insight. Would you say your budget can be a reality for a male competing in a pageant?? Even though I'm in my 30s now, there are pageants for men where we age out at 49. I am now looking at clothes, suits in preparation for Mr. Cosmos 2021. How should a male prepare and budget.
@DaniWalker
@DaniWalker 4 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the level you're competing at. If you're competing at a state level, it shouldn't cost so much. But you need to evaluate what your goals are and what do you need the most help with. For example, I took only 2 hours of walking lessons with Lu. She didn't make any corrections to my walk. She was like, "You're good, let's just work on turns." I didn't need to pour money into walking lessons. But if my walk needed a lot of work, some of the money I spent on attending appearances, would have instead been used for walking lessons. But creating a budget with spending limits is important. I knew I didn't want to spend more than 5k, out of pocket, for my Miss USA gown. I stuck to that.

There are a bunch but not all of their prizes were necessary for USA prep. Many of the sponsors were located in Washington so I couldn't claim the sponsorship without flying there. We had things like hair, skin and nail sponsors, but it doesn't make much sense to fly to WA for a pedicure lol.

I have spent at least $200,000 by travelling for 10 years to Europe and Asia and people tell me that I was crazy spending that amount of money. But I thought it was totally worth it spending that amount of money because it was a life experience in my 20's that I will not experience again in my 30's because as you get older, you're not as strong or as interested anymore.

Honestly, it is high time women stop competing with their beauty....most of which is bought with cosmetic work..............however, I wanted to go deeper and explain that this is not healthy. We are all beautiful and winning a "prize" is simply an ego booster that can perhaps be gained by doing something a bit less..................self centered?
@DaniWalker
@DaniWalker 4 жыл бұрын
Pageants are about more than beauty, most contestants understand this. I developed confidence, not because I learned how to apply makeup, but because I learned how to recognize my worth. Pageants taught me how to maintain my cool in stressful situations and interviews. They gave me confidence to speak in public and create a KZbin channel. TV shows, show a glimpse of what pageantry really is and its value to all women. It's one of those things you have to try for yourself to truly understand. I encourage you to enter a pageant, everyone can benefit from encouragement, personal growth, and stepping outside their comfort zone
