As an Israeli I have to say this - PLEASE don't get offended if people respond to you in English and PLEASE don't think it means your Hebrew is bad. They're trying to be nice, and they speaking to a person in their native tongue is the nice thing to do. They don't get why it's annoying. They're also just happy they can communicate in English and want to show it. So please don't take it the wrong way and certainly don't think it says ANYTHING about your Hebrew. Even people with great, native-level Hebrew, can encounter this problem.

Great video! I am trying to self-teach Hebrew. But I am struggling with the grammar. What do you suggest we beginners should do with the grammar? Many thanks!

I have the opposite problem sometimes because my pronunciation is pretty good because I speak Arabic, so they will reply to me in really fast complex Hebrew.

I actually have that problem too! It's a blessing and a curse haha. Maybe we should make another video to address the *other* side of things! What do you normally do in those situations?

@@Linguistix lol truly a blessing and a curse. I honestly just smile and say ken ken ken ken or just say I only know a little if I do not understand the sentence at all. But if I understand I will usually say some kind of short response.

You may want to practice your Hebrew, but we want to practice our English, also. We don't get many opportunities to do that.

I made Aliya a year ago, and took a six-month ulpan. It was only six hours a week, but I thought I was making good progress. Besides, I'd been married to an Israeli for years. But OMG, every single time I start to speak, every single person answers in English. My son says it's because my I sound "so American." Love what I've heard here so far. And hoping my Pennsylvania accent will morph into something my Tel Aviv neighbors can understand.

Don't let it discourage you! Really they just think they're being nice by speaking to you in your native tongue. They don't understand the problem. So please don't think it means anything about your Hebrew.

@@MixedFruit876 Thanks for your advice and encouragement. I am determined to stay, but sometimes I feel that I will never feel a part of this society, that it will remain foreign forever. Which is a scary thought. So every encouraging word, every person who gets it, and every American who hates it here sometimes but stays , well, they’re kind of heroes to me. My life can no longer be about my comfort level. It’s more comfortable in New Jersey. It’s something bigger here. Which I can’t explain, but everyone feels it.

@@ExtraPencil2 I'm Israeli and I was born in Israel and let me ensure you - you are part of our society! Don't ever forget that all Israelis see you that way. Israelis come from all backgrounds. We area all olim or children or olim or grandchildren of olim etc :) It's a very natural thing in Israel to be born in a different country. Olim are an important part of Israeli society, it's impossible to imagine Israel or to tell its story or to explain its culture without our Russians and without our Americans and without our French and yes also without us Israeli-born tzabars :) But we are all part of the same society :) Yes it's something bigger here and yes you are definitely a part of it!

@@MixedFruit876 thank you. I’ve no idea when you posted this. I’m notorious for forgetting to check in with social media. I’m a bit anti-social sometimes. Not a great thing in a new country. Wonder why I’m here writing in a group on zoom and talking to my cat. 😻😻😻
