Gwen isn't Gwyneth, just as Suzie isn't the Duchess. Jack probably didn't mention the TARDIS by name because it would have led to more questions from Gwen. Torchwood One to Four aren't "phases" of Torchwood, but different branches. They coexist(ed) in the same universe and timeline, but Torchwood One was destroyed in the battle of Canary Wharf (aka the S2 finale of Doctor Who).

You've encountered the first of SO MANY CASES where the Doctor Who showrunner likes an actor so much that he'll recast them in either a related role or a new role so that he can have them on for longer. Sometimes there's an explanation, sometimes there's not. It's quite confusing, honestly. You'll see this happen multiple times in the next year alone.

8:45 The setting of Cardiff is a huge part of Torchwood. After several years of pretending that South Wales (where Doctor Who is filmed) is London, or an alien planet, or a beach in Norway they decided to actually set Torchwood there. RTD also makes the point multiple times through the franchise about Wales being overlooked as part of the UK, and this overt representation of Wales was pretty rare when the show first aired... and still is now.

I saw you mention it in the video, and Cardiff is a lovely city. The bay is beautiful and the city center is incredible. The castle is awesome aswell. Although Doctor Who has a lot of the show set in England, they film primarily in Wales, so lots of the shows filming locations are there in Cardiff. There was a massive Doctor Who museum in Cardiff with an interactive experience, and it was incredible, but sadly it closed in 2017. Torchwood also had such a massive impact on Cardiff and Wales, a shrine was set up in the bay by local fans where the entrance to Torchwood is in the show, and is updated constantly by fans, BUT I WARN YOU, THE SHRINE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR FUTURE SERIES.

My partner’s a little older than me so was old enough to watch this comfortably when it aired in 2006, whereas I’m more Doctor Who and wasn’t old enough to watch this when it originally aired (there are some strong adult themes in this series that you just wouldn’t find in Doctor Who!). He really enjoyed Torchwood but doesn’t like Doctor Who, possibly because Torchwood is *much* more adult, and Doctor Who is more family friendly/doesn’t take itself so seriously. I don’t understand how anyone who likes this wouldn’t like Doctor Who, though!

Yes, it’s not an alternate timeline. It’s an alternative time slot. Torchwood came on much later in the evening when they could air more mature subject matter. As a result, they didn’t want to attract younger audiences to the show so there’s minimal mention of Doctor Who details. The Doctor also won’t be crossing over. But you’ll notice he mentioned general plot details from the show that the general public is supposed to be aware of and his own history on the show. So it’s definitely the same universe/timeline. It is interesting whenever actors play more than one role in the same show. It’s not that uncommon on a show that’s lasted over 60 years. I can think of at least 9 off the top of my head right now. And I’ve updated that number a few times while writing this.

Just to clarify gwen isn’t Gwyneth, just the same actress in a different role, she was given that name just as a nod to her previous appearance (although not to be spoilery the show does eventually make a light reference to gwyneth, kind of implied shes gwens ancestor). Torchwood 1-3 also are just different branches of torchwood, the same way that say google has different buildings and teams scattered across the US. The reason they don’t explicitly mention a ton of doctor who related things in the show (although you do get more explicit nods as it goes on) is probably just done to not alienate audience members that haven’t seen doctor who

One connection you missed - the charater of Tosh / Toshiko was also in an episode of Doctor Who. She's the scientist in Aliens of London who is examining the pig alien from the spaceship the Slitheen crashed as a distraction. Gwen is NOT the same character as the actress played in The Unquiet Dead, but it's implied at some point that she may be related to her (like Gwyneth was her great-great auntie). Other connections to Doctor Who you might have missed is that he gave a complex explaination for it - but the reason that nobody can see the entrance to Torchwood is because when the TARDIS parked there and refueled on the rift, it left a residual perception filter - meaning people just kind of don't look at it or notice it There's also one other BIG connection that's a prop you didn't notice but I'll not spoil that one. Same universe Jack just found a way to earth after events of S1 of DW. I forget if books or explained in DW. No idea if his time jump on his wrist then the surfboard he was on Sat 5 after all. Unless a transport but likely a wrist time jump. This is why I think people should watch S3 or 4 of DW instead before Torchwood for 'events' to happen but it's fine still till events align. I watched DW a lot then Torchwood I got to late as in like 2023 but went ah S2-4 of DW events matter here besides it's being it's own thing. Torchwood is like Warehouse 13 I feel multiple Torchwood branches, gadgets to track down strange things but instead of artifacts more X Files or others about alien things. But yes adult DW concepts. Similar writers,, more out there concepts DW or Sarah Jane Adventures don't do. Not all episodes are good but the ones that land really land as good as the best DW episodes. Yep Tosh in space pig S1 E4/5 episode she is my favourite character in Torchwood, Gwen as ancestor of Gwen in S1 E3 DW. Suzie she had to risk it. Jack lives because of Rose still of course. DW is fair to align with comparisons for sure. :)

Yes, Eve Myles played Gwyneth in The Unquiet Dead. The show has a history of bringing the people they like back. The most notable instance was having Colin Baker in the Fifth Doctor story Arc of Infinity. He played the commander of the Capitol guard on Gallifrey, Maxill, and has the dubious distinction of being the only actor to have shot his predecessor on screen before taking over the role. :D Naoko Mori, who in Torchwood plays Toshiko Sato, was also the expert brought in to examine the pig-hybrid created by the Slitheen in Aliens of London. I believe the BBC actually gave her previously unnamed character in AoL her Torchwood character's name retroactively, , after Torchwood premiered, to establish a connection between the two shows. Also, I'm so sorry for the next episode. It would be no surprise to those familiar with his style that it was written by Chris Chibnall, who it seems didn't quite get the memo about what the show was supposed to be about. He who would later go on to be Who's show runner, who many would argue brought the same "doesn't really get the show" vibe, resulting in some of the worst received episodes of the shows history. And that includes the classic era stories like Horns of the Nimon and Underworld.

@@KelilaBennet He still can. I've said absolutely nothing about plot, character or story. He may love it, and that's fine. Or he may think it sucks, and that's fine too. Besides, do you really think he'll remember one comment on an unrelated episode in two years when he gets to Chibnall's era? I just respect the man too much to not be brutally honest about things. Pretending things aren't what they are is why the world is in the state we're in, and the only way out is like the Qowat Milat and adhere to a policy of absolute candor.

@@gestaltdude So you tell him your opinions at the end of the next episode, not "hey the director for next episode and for the future kinda sucks good luck".

@@gestaltdude that doesn't matter. you're still giving him a preconceived idea of future episodes and eras. he might not remember your comment specifically, but you're not the first person to comment something like that. i just don't understand why people like you can't just keep your mouth shut

But I hear your thoughts and share it. It seems people fall in two categories on this: watch torchwood before season 3 dw or watch it after season 3. The before season 3 people were louder. Mostly because those who want after don’t want to spoil by saying why.

honestly the order is irrelevant. spoiler jacks immortal. honestly people commenting on watch order implies more of a spoiler than the immortality thing

@@SoTOreoit is spoiler. For Doctor Who. Not here. So yes. There can be a lot of spoilers. Just stop this is happening now and that’s it.

S1 of Torchwood aired in full before S3 of DW even premiered. watching the 2 concurrently with each other is perfectly fine

No, no alternate timeline. Same Jack.. Don't assume anything. This is not Doctor Who.
