NOTIFICATION SQUAD: I think this is the most I've ever suffered for a video. Getting wedged in a shrine and almost killed by a horse. Would you rather ride a horse or go in that cave? But seriously, what a crazy episode. I don't think we've ever had so many bizarre situations pop up in a single Journey Across Japan episode before! I'd also like to apologise to our beloved Dutch viewers for my pronunciation. (ALSO apologies for the later release time this week - KZbin just WOULD NOT process the video. It drove me mad).

@ありn-p1y
@ありn-p1y Жыл бұрын
Completely agree, but would point out that the horse didn't seem unbroken - I assume what they meant when they said 'untrained' was 'untrained to carry novices on trail rides' (and to a secondary degree, untrained to carry riders who are pulling on the reins way too f* hard). My early riding classes were actually taken on an older pony like this - lovely and placid on the lunge at fair rides etc, but mishandle her reins a little too often and you would immediately discover why her name was "Dancer"😂. Having said that, it's still a huge safety risk to put a novice on a horse with that much attitude. Hopefully the owners have learnt their lesson from this!
@ChiIIi...
@ChiIIi... 7 ай бұрын
@@Fallenangel_85 It's not necessarily the age that matters that much but the training and their personality. I know two 5 year olds who are the sweetest horses ever and there sure also are 24 year olds that definitely can't carry beginners. Most of the time it comes from just that slight bit of unbalance or too much contact with the mouth that you see a horse that does these trails react like this and of course Chris himself being nervous doesn't help. However this horse should have never been used for these kinds of rides with the way it was behaving.
@Fallenangel_85
@Fallenangel_85 7 ай бұрын
@@ChiIIi... There is some variation. But if you plan to put lots of untrained strangers onto horses, you want those horses to be dull and docile. I don't think it's a great experience for a younger horse at all. There is ofc also older horses with bad character that will sense a beginner and immediately try to loose him, but that's also a bad horse for this :)

As an ex-trail rider guide, that was stressful! I don't know if I would agree with that type of bit (in the horse's mouth) when it comes to trail rides and complete beginners given the reins. That type of bit multiples the pressure because it's leveraged. So when you pull that amount back, it was applying a good amount of pressure and hence why she was backing up so quickly and twitching her head a bit. Usually just a light pull is enough to send a message. It's generally not good for beginners. Beginners are usually put on snaffles (direct pressure) or even hackamore (nothing in the mouth, just headgear). She was also a bit "green" which is an inexperienced / novice horse. 6 years old is young for a trail horse. Sorry you had such a horrible first experience on a horse. But your content has been great and I look forward to every video.

I'd like your opinion. I once got on a horse assigned by the nomads in the plains of mongolia, it kept lowering its head to eat while we were waiting to set off and the reins for it seemed particular short compared to other horses. I tried to let it eat, but if i did i would have had to completely let go of the reins, and i was afraid i wouldn't be able to get a hold again. I tried pulling harder on the reins to keep it from trying to graze, but i was afraid of hurting ny hands and also the horse. Do you think it was also a young, untrained horse like the one Chris got?

Years of following Chris, and there is nothing more to say than that I eagerly await every single video. Each one is an incredible journey, and I love to live vicariously through him. He has been with me throughout high school, university, and now I am out in the big wide world, but Abroad in Japan has been a constant pleasure of mine to grow up with. Thank you, Chris, for being undoubtedly my favorite, and the single most inspiring content creator, I have ever had the pleasure of following. Keep up the incredible work.

@@santerisalmivuori3872 - not sure what Natsuki contributes really to these trips? Nice guy, but his English remains poor, limited to a few words and is not accurate gramatically (it's an English speaking programme after all). Also he says the F word a lot - this gets boring! - and if he utters that or any other couple of words, why do Chris/Joey laugh their heads off as if this is great wit? Joey is an articulate, witty and creative contributor for the show. If Natsuski increased his English vocab with less of the F word he might be more interesting, imo. @@jhawkins8264 he's just an interesting character and a big part of Chris's audience really really likes him. After all this "holiday for natsuki" only came to be because it was so heavily requested. And imo there is absolutely no need for him to learn better english. Whenever he wants to express something he will do so in japanese - as will Joey sometimes. Keeping it 100% english would just make it a bit less interesting. They're in japan anyways so why shouldn't there be a bit of japanese involved? His always boisterous happy attitude is a good contrast to Chris’s cynical and sarcastic sense of humour. Chris bounces off and playfully jokes about Natsuki’s attitude and over the top behaviour often, which adds on to the humour. Well done, you made me explain to you why people find it funny. Hopefully you can try understand humour and other people’s perspective next time yourself. I am new to your channels. I spent the last 2 days binge watching all of your videos. I have watched a lot of youtube channels and youtubers from Steven Crowder to Bret Weinstien to Abanonded etc., for many years now. You are the best that I have ever seen. ALL criticisims about and against you are total BS. You have a presence and charm that really comes across as personable, presentable, and approachable. You are a great story teller. You have great ideas and an ability to translate them in a way that inspires others to get out there and actually travel. You have a way of inviting your viewers into the travel experience in a way that acutally makes it seem like they are traveling with you. While you show many different aspects and products of Japan for informational purposes you don't heavy hand the situation by actually huckstering the products, like so many other youtubes (i.e. Crowder) do. You don't seem to rely on selling products or promoting companies to get your videos made. Your videos move along smoothly and organically which really adds to their quality. You produce excellent, high quality, videos, which are entertaining, informative and positive, all without selling out and staying true to you message and yourself. You do this with your own efforts, sweat and tears, without relying on big money sponsorship, networks or Hollywood. That is really impressive in this day age. I am going to start supporting you on Patreon. I have always wanted to travel to Japan, but was too intimidated to do so. Because of your videos I now feel that I can go. Thanks for all of your inspiration and good ideas. Don't change a thing. What you have is talent, it is genuine, and not everyone has this. Forget your haters, those who can't do criticize. You are like Anthony Bourdain, back when he did No Reservations, when he was still fresh and untainted by corporate media. You have given me hope again after a very longtime of lockdowns and disappointments. You have shown me a way out with hope of travel to beautiful Japan.

That's a shame your first time on a horse ended up like that. Horseback riding can be very calming/soothing. You just need a lot of time to get used to horses/how to handle one/how to sit in the saddle, a helmet (because falls happen) and an experienced horse. I think a few days after my first horseback riding lesson (it was VERY early on) my horse stumbled and threw me. I was thankfully wearing a helmet, otherwise I wouldn't be here today...my helmeted head hit a rather large rock...I was just a kid and while it did scare me for a little bit...I did eventually get back onto that same horse and kept learning how to ride.

I agree. a Helmet is always important, no matter how good of a rider you are. I was a bit worried about the huge shank bits as well. Not just that I wouldn't use them in general, but also that they were used on horses with beginners on them. The tiniest movement clearly stressed the horse. Also the rider taking Chris' horse back constantly pulled back the reins. No wonder the horse was going "crazy".

Horses I did have a healthy fear...huge animal that could kill you if they wanted to...but horses can be so gentle. I also grew up listening to my mom talk about her horse she owned when she was a teenager (she bought a horse instead of a car!). So my love for horses was set early on in life. Helped I read and watched a lot of media related to horses/ponies. But even when I got onto that first horse...I was scared. The ranch shouldn’t have put you on that horse especially as it was new and not fully trained. Things could have gone seriously wrong. I am very glad you stayed calm and calmly got off which deffo prevented any injuries. added info: it very likely was throwing a tantrum at you if it was trying to eat and you trying to stop it which again is down to horses being animals but in this case also links back to the training not being fully done yet. Again well done for staying calm. You might have pulled too harshly which can also set off horses especially if they are sensitive and not done with training yet however linking back to my original point it deffo was not your fault-the ranch mismatched you and the horse

As someone from the Netherlands I found that a British guy, a Australian guy and a Japanese guy trying to pronounce Overijssel was one of the funniest things in this video 😅

THANK YOU, for teaching Natsuki English...in particular the "F" word, it always makes my day! Don't feel bad about the horse, I live in Texas and have only ridden a horse once and never EVER want to do it again :)

As soon as I saw the way he was holding the reins, I knew where this was going. He was probably squeezing with his legs too, if he was that nervous, which gives the horse lots of mixed signals. Not a good mix, with a horse so freshly trained. I'm genuinely surprised it stayed as calm as it did, for so long.

@@EvansFamilyLegoProject Overijssel means across the river IJssel. The i and j combination in Dutch is considered to be one letter and is pronounced as something like “ey.”

Dutchie here, that really looks a lot like the Netherlands. The interior of the house was very early 20th century though, so that's not really up to date anymore, but the outside buildings are exactly like in the Netherlands. That's creepy. Looking forward to watching the next episode!

I've had house centipedes like that in my house. The first time one popped up in my kitchen, my husband wasn't home. I bravely caught it in a glass and took it outside, but I screamed like a little girl. Continuously. For the entire five minutes it took.

As a dutch person, its so weird to see how accurate they are with that theme park. O.o Makes me wanna visit my own country in Japan XD The only thing that im asking myself is if "De Domtoren" aka the Domtower is actually as big as its in Utrecht, cause as far as i know its still the biggest building in Netherlands.

I live I Utrecht, and the Domtoren is 105 m in Huis ten Bosch and 112m in Utrecht. They did this out of respect of the original building. The domtoren is not the biggest building aswell. There are alot of bigger and higher buildings in Rotterdam. (for example the Maastoren). It's so awsome to recognize parts of the canals in this video!

Just discovered your channel like a week ago, and really enjoying your content. It was driving me nuts because I couldn’t find the next video in this series, but then realized it’s because I’m watching your most current videos! Looking forward to more in this series, and have a ton of videos to catch up on in the meantime. Saw your TED talk, too. You really have a gift for this stuff.

As someone from the Netherlands, the province of Overijssel in particular, this was hilarious! I never even considered how the word Overijssel might be pronounced by foreigners, it’s literally ‘’over the ijssel’ which is a river. Also, that Dutch city replica is so good that i was really confused for a second. They really went all out :o Looking forward to the next episode!!
