NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Sorry for the delay in getting this video up! As some of you may know if you follow me on Twitter, it's been something of a bumpy week what with certain demonetisation issues on the Wacky Weekend episode. We resolved them though, so it's a happy ending thankfully! Enjoy Connor and I as we tour this stunning ryokan and be sure to check out our epic Wacky Weekend Winter road trip in case you missed it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXPUdH9pdq6FkJY

When I watched the wacky weekend video and saw the few seconds of footage of the ryokan in Yudanaka I thought it looked like the place my wife and I stayed at on our first trip to Japan together (actually when I proposed to her!). I was really hanging out for this video to come out so I could double check, and now I'm 99% sure it's the same place. Shibu Onsen Kokuya? We saw the snow monkeys and stayed in Yudanaka, at a 400 year old onsen, with very similar private baths in the room, and a public bath called Issa that looked just like that, and I have a couple of photos of me wearing the exact same yukata that Connor is wearing. It's not totally conclusive, but it's pretty bloody close! Apparently we stayed there 10 years ago (which is genuinely shocking, how has it been that long) but it was definitely one of the best experiences I've had in Japan, and probably anywhere for that matter, even though we went in the middle of summer and it was stinking hot. The baths were beautiful, and the food was great. It was a little bit tricky, because no one at the inn spoke any English, and while my wife had lived in Japan for a few years her Japanese was far from fluent, so we kind of muddled along with a few mix ups, but all in all brilliant. They even arranged for us to go on a bus tour further up into the mountains to see fireflies, which coming from Australia I'd never seen before, and it was honestly magical. Then they sent us on our way with a little package of onigiri and some beautiful fans. All in all an incredible stay, and an incredible coincidence that it seems like you guys stayed there too. Couldn't recommend it enough if people get the chance, and it seems even better in winter.

Beans are fresh only for 2 weeks max depending on the packaging, humidity, ect... Not surprised they taste dull as you can't control how are handle these beans anyway in an hotel room 😅.

There's a reason table tennis is often seen in smaller places. It's a moderately strenuous experience for not that much space taken up. Plus the pace of the game is quick so even 4 people can enjoy themselves without getting too bored.

For reference, the onsen they visited is not part of the 9 public onsens from what I can tell, but is part of Shibu Onsen Kokuyama, a Ryokan directly adjacent to onsen 9.

i love seeing these traditional inns, those are my favorites. I'm kinda hoping to see Chris and Conner on a small boat where Norm is the captian and taking them around Toyko or the open sea.

I've actually stayed in Yudanaka back in February 2019 at Uotoshi Ryokan. They have a lot of samurai memorabilia in their entrance lobby and a kyudojo attached to the ryokan where visitors can have a go at trying out Kyudo. Just try to not hit any of the koi fish in the pond between you and the target.

Oh, Yudanaka. Glad you guys stoped there on your trip. It is our usual place when we visit Japan. Somehow the atmosphere there is nice. As Chris said, it used to be quite popular with international turists, me included. I even met other random people from Europe or even my country there, e.g. when I heard familiar language comming out from the public bath. I hope Japan will open to tourists soon.

Your sense of humour and style of videos are returning back to the videos from your first few golden years. Less cheesy & pretentious videos (no offence; and yes I acknowledge my channel is no comparison and devoid of humour), recently they're more genuine, humble, with some nice sprinkles of dry English wit, great to see this return. You're genuinely making me belly laugh again. Huge fan having this version of Chris back, he's been sorely missed!
