I lived in the Bay Area for 15 years; the only time I got robbed was in Oakland around 2010, near Jack London Square. Never went back after that and moved away a few years ago. I'm so glad I don't live in that mess of an area anymore.

Jack London feels relatively safe these days. It’s certainly safe compared to Hegenberger road.

I don't live in Oakland, but I have been to Jack London Square and its waterfront, and I feel that it's one of the more safer areas of the city. In fact, as of this writing, I went to Jack London Square last week & felt quite safe.

I grew up in Oakland. It is an incredibly beautiful place with expensive parks and amazing architecture. It is full of a vibrant art and music scene and is an economic powerhouse with the port, major corporations like Kaiser and Clorox, and a hub of innovation in tech, education and healthcare. It breaks my heart to see the crime and poverty spread so far in the city. But anyone who truly knows the city understands it is still sn amazing place.

I went to that Raising Cane's about a year ago and couldn't believe how bad that area was. I've spent plenty of time in Oakland and it never seemed as bad as people made it out to be but that section was incredibly sketchy.

The case that the A's and Fisher make about, "We can't make it in Oakland," rings true, unfortunately, when seeing this. This is a dam shame. I am familiar with this area from when we attended A's games from Modesto. When coming from Sacramento, we don't see this area, not that it is any safer. Why can't politicians just get things DONE! Is it that there is so much red tape? The issue is too far gone, and everyone just has a "f**k it, it is what it is!" Man.
@AdamDoesNotExist
@AdamDoesNotExist 8 ай бұрын
There's so much that is so frustrating about this. It's why I thought doing a food tour might lighten the mood a bit. It's tough not to feel some understanding of Fisher wanting out of Oakland. Especially considering he's politically on the other end of the spectrum. At the same time, investment into sports teams has helped revitalize neighborhoods in places like Detroit, and Philly. But Fisher hasn't tried to do any of that in Oakland.

Oakland is an anomaly. If you have enough money to live in the nicer parts, it can be a slice of paradise away from the city. I left SF for the Oakland hills back in 2020 and never looked back. It has everything you need and is in such convenient location distance wise to the entire Bay Area. I love me some In-N-Out, but the people who swear by In-N-Out, Whataburger and Shake Shack haven’t explored the full spectrum of what a truly great burger tastes like. I’d take a Super Duper Burger any day over those three. Keep up with the videos. I really enjoy your different perspectives on these places you visit.

In the late 1980’s and 1990’s, my sons and I went to several A’s games a year. We only only got out of the car in the parking lot or the BART station to walk game. We never stopped anywhere else in Oakland just to be on the safe side. Looks like it’s gotten much worse. Too bad a thriving business district did not develop around the Coliseum.

For the nearly 10 years I've lived in Oakland, I've never thought about visiting hegen-burgers 😂 When I first moved to Oakland in 2014 I thought I wanted to be buried in Oakland. With the rising crime, the influx of camper vans and homeless, and the city politics is making me rethink that decision. For the prices we pay in rent you would think this city is better ran, but it not. Oakland is being divested from and out troubling.

Oakland really is bad. I’ve lived here for years and I’m from the east bay. I’m finally leaving next year since so many of my friends have been mugged at gun point and/or threatened with one unprovoked. Six friends of mine have left in under a year. I have one friend who got robbed while pumping gas at Grand Lake too. Oakland is beautiful but it’s a goddamn mess out here and anyone who’s trying to shrug it off is simply lying to themselves cause it doesn’t fit their narrative ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I moved to the bay area for school and I've never felt more unsafe then I when was waiting for an uber not 1 block from the Oakland Police Department station, watching a guy look underneath and try the doors of every single car parked on the other side of the street, then move onto trying to open the doors and windows of every building. If I happened to be on his side of the street, I'm pretty sure the dude would've tried to rob me and my friend. We walked the other way as he slowly and methodically tried to commit crimes TOWARD the direction of the station. Not only that, but 2/3 parks that we saw on our way to check out some places to eat looked like they were taken over as encampments. I walked by the Chinese Garden Park and there was zero chance that I was going to go in there, it looked positively dystopian from across the road.

I feel this was a good clear look into an issue with your biases spelled out. I have a reaction to your comment where you implied that raising the minimum wage caused Wally World to bow out of the city. If you have a business that relies on underpaying people then it not much of a business plan. In general it feels strange to demand cheap labor so our consumer cost is low. Not sure I am comfortable with that dynamic.
@ArtamStudio

To me it wasn't implied at all, it was very plainly stated the wage hike was the reason for closing - paying their staff more would affect the Waltons' 15th Lear jet.

Its kinda insane how much thing can change in Oakland. I used to walk around Edgewater all the time and never felt even the tiniest bit unsafe. Pre-pandemic it was probably the nicest area in Deep east Oakland. There are systemic issues that have cause the neighborhood to falter that needs to be addressed.

In-N-Out burgers actually are good, though. A lot of the most famous chefs and food critics in the world (e.g. Gordon Ramsay, Bobby Flay, the late Anthony Bourdain, etc.) have claimed In-N-Out as the best fast food burger (if they had to choose a fast food burger.) Mainly because the ingredients are so fresh. Usually the people who don't like In-N-Out just need something more salty, more fried, and some bacon, which is a valid preference.
