The Oakland Athletics shocked the baseball world when they announced they'd be moving to a minor league stadium. There are a lot of issues with this, sure. But what's it really like to see a game in the Major League Baseball's newest and smallest stadium? And what's all the controversy surrounding this decisions.

Sacramento resident here. From what I’ve seen/heard. Everyone in Sac is excited for an MLB team to come here. They are also looking at it as a “tryout” to hopefully either steal the A’s from Vegas or get an expansion team. Also, my buddy works in the right field pavilion as security and does attest that some of the dudes working there aren’t the sharpest crayon in the toolbox. Great Vid!

I'm a photographer for a Pioneer League (MLB partner league, same as the new oakland ballers), the Glacier Range Riders. These type of small scale games are magical. Family fun, cheap food and beer, and intimate viewing of some good baseball. However, I cannot imagine how chaotic and awful it will be when the A's take over. The ballparks are different for a reason, and Oakland is about to ruin the magic of this one.

I worked in the parking lot at Rally Field in 2019; the last year it was called by that name (and the year the River Cats won the Minor League World Series!). The stadium is immaculate and the River Cat organization treats the fans and their employees very well. Best non-career job I ever had! A lot of fun. When it was owned by the Savage family, the pay and perks couldn’t be beat. Not sure about now. Over 1 summer working in the parking lot I experienced maybe 3 days where the heat was so bad, standing in the sun was unbearable. We used canopies on those days. Most day games you could count on the delta breeze to cool things down mid- afternoon…at least convinced you of that…but always making it tolerable. The sun was the devil. Night games were the best time to watch a game! Maybe schedule all night games to beat the heat? One of the old timers once told me that when they built the stadium back in the late 90’s, they built the stadium foundation to allow for an additional deck(s) to be built should stadium expansion be necessary in the future. Word was that the Sac area and the Savage family always had an outside hope of attracting a major league team to Sacramento someday and wanted that option. Was never able to verify that story but the same guy told me…… The story about the War of the Stadiums between the cities of West Sacramento and Sacramento trying to attract the Vancouver Canadians to Sacramento back in the mid-late 90’s. Within miles of each other, both cities began constructing stadiums to attract the team. Eventually budget constraints caused Sac Town to stop building the baseball stadium-this later became the site of Arco Arena north of Sac in Natomas; another failed sports venture. This I personally confirmed. If you Google Map the Arco or Sleep Train Arena in Sac, you can still see the columns and foundation to the unfinished River Cat stadium. The playing field is now a pond. Thankfully, it looks like they finally knocked down that hideous Sleep Train arena.

This was just at the start of the Money ball era when the A's were really good and you could see a lot of their former starts come through Sacramento. I think the time is right for MLB in Sacramento. Many don’t remember I guess when the River Cats first started in Sac in 2000. Sutter Health Park’s original name was Raley Field and they were affiliated with the A’s for 15 years and they sold out a lot of games, won a lot of pennants and multiple Triple A titles, especially in the first 10 years, but the novelty has kind of wore off and now it’s time for MLB action and it will be awesome. I can’t wait to go to A’s games and bring back the atmosphere in Sac that the Coliseum had back in the 80’s when Walter Haas owned the team.

I am always amazed how people make videos without doing any research at all. So what did this guy miss.... Baseball has been a staple in the Central Valley of CA for nearly 100 years. People in the Valley love all kinds of sports so you can expect the stadium to be full. If you want to see the A's in SAC town you had better buy tickets early. This is one of the nicest parks you will ever see a game in. Excellent views from most seats. It is located on the Sacramento River so it has cooling marine breezes. One of the cooler locations in the valley. You can park cheaper in Old Town Sac across the river, have dinner, walk to the park, watch the game, and see fireworks over the river. Great family outing. Given the choice between Oakland and Sac this is a huge step up from Oakland. Oh, and the Merlino Freeze is fantastic on a hot day. It is a fan favorite!!

@@rm-jl8wy Oakland was not on the table when looking for a temporary home the next 2-3 years. I think Oakland thought the A’s have no where to go so they over charged the team, a mistake by Oakland. The best and closest to their original fans base is Sac for a time being. It might not get the old fans base to drive 1.5h, but worth a try. The only negative to this, is Sac will only provide temp fans. If they go to Vegas now, they would start building their new fans base now instead of starting over 2-3 years from now.

I have the same question, really, and it makes me think the A's aren't 100% committed to Vegas. If they were, why not even consider moving to LV, displacing the Aviators, and initiating a media deal in Southern NV. Maybe they are hearing no interest from the local media, and couldn't work out a deal with their minor league affiliate operator to share the Aviators stadium.

Because the chances of the A’s actually moving to Vegas are extremely slim. If they move there before a stadium is built, they’re going to get stranded out there with no stadium. You're too young to remember when the A's were a dynasty in the early '70s, the most dominant team in baseball. I grew up in Modesto, Joe Rudi's hometown, a high school classmate of his brother, Paul. The A's won three consecutive World Series when I was in high school. We used to ditch class to drive over to Oakland to watch the A's in the ALCS. Yes John Fisher is a douche, but Charlie Finley was a bigger douche. The Oakland Coliseum was a world class venue back then. Who cares if we had to piss in trough urinals, they were common back then. You're too young to remember Day On the Green too. Some of the most legendary rock concerts of the time. I saw the Dead, the Beach Boys, the Doobie Brothers, Eagles, Peter Frampton, the Who, Steve Miller, Foreigner, Journey and Lynyrd Skynyrd perform in that stadium. It will always be hallowed ground.
