In Hungary, we have a very similar dessert to your "creme brulee" called madártej (bird milk), just use milk instead of heavy cream. It uses the egg whites as a topping, you just need stiff peaks with a little sugar and cook it on a double boiler. It's really good, your version reminded me of this.

My personal favorite was the 1 hour per bag in hot water, just to get it mildly warm. That is commitment. Now, could you just slam the goop into a frying pan and cook it like an omelette? It would shorten the time for at least 50 minutes, while having all the textures and stages of glaze in it.
