Wayne the boat guy, wheel chocks are sized by vehicle wheel diameter. The chock you are using looks like a Jetski trailer chock. Trucks are designed to drive over obstacles that size plus you used it under your rear tire with an empty pickup bed. The front tire would have offered more down force. A better solution is to engage four wheel drive if available. In two wheel drive park will keep one rear wheel locked and the parking brake only locks the rear wheel. In four wheel drive the park gear will keep one front and one rear wheel from rolling. Since the rear wheels are usually on the slickest part of the ramp it’s the front wheels you should focus on keeping planted.

He is only using one chock, I would use a minimum of two chocks and on a steep hill, use four chocks. $32 is cheap insurance for a $40,000 truck.
@charleselertii61878 ай бұрын
Definitely use more than one wheel chock on the truck tires at the boat ramp.

Makes sense - but I've never seen anyone at the boat ramp use more than one (and many people don't use any).

Place it behind the front tire at a higher point on the ramp. Use a larger wheel chock as well.

That's how I did it with a 69 Bronco and a manual trans with no e brake. Had a rope tied to it and pulled it in as I released the clutch, worked for me.

awesome. as a new boater so much to learn. it's a steep slippery learning ramp....
@dougaranda61878 ай бұрын
Locking all four brakes is the only way to go. I use a board from the seat to the brake pedal, some people use a modified caulking gun, and you can also buy a device just for that purpose. Mechanics use them for testing brake lights.
@SJMessinwithBoats8 ай бұрын
Exactly, also in wheel alignments. By the time I get out of the vehicle to put those chocks down on our gravel ramp, the vehicle is already in danger. Keep preaching the truth please. 2x4 is good enough for me.

0:38 this just gave me the though about how the wheel chock os tied to the truck, from the bumper on a strong short rope, so if the truck rolls the block. It runs up the tight rope and stops the trucks trie from turning backwards? 🤔
@BurchellAtTheWharf8 ай бұрын
Effectively making it a huge wheelchock that you can stash in the bumper or still get it in the back of the truck 3:40 well a bigger wheel chock might work better?

Wayne, quick question, if you start an outboard cold with a thermostat will it pump water immediately or does the engine warm up then start peeing?
@WayneTheBoatGuy8 ай бұрын
Every one of mine always started right away.
@AXWagon3 ай бұрын
From what I understand, if it has a thermostat, it should also have a relief valve somewhere as well in the cooling system. My old Evinrude 70HP has two right beside the thermostat that open and allow flow when you get up in RPM and the thermostat hasn't opened yet. Starts peeing right away, but the flow is definitely less than after the thermostat has opened

The wheel chock is meant for extra insurance as you say... If it begins to slide, it probably has a locked up tire or two so it won't need to hold the entire car on it's own.

Why don't you chock the front tire? Where it's less slippery and probably less steep for better grip?
@Garyscott78 ай бұрын
Wheel chocks are only to prevent parking brake creep, not to prevent all movement. For the same reason you can drive your car over a curb or parking lot stop. Mico (and others) make 4 wheel hydraulic locks for tow trucks. They have to winch cars and stuff that may be over the side or in otherwise tough locations. One may be a good investment for your custom dual/ triple axle yacht behind your new $100,000 truck. They run in the hundreds of dollars + installation though. Summit Racing sells a cheaper hydraulic 2-wheel "staging lock" that fits in one of your front/ rear brake lines for $58.00. I have no idea if it works, but it should. It would also make for a tricky anti-theft device if you hide the wiring. All would be well until Mr. thief applies the brakes - for the first and only time.

Just pull up a bit, doesn't take that long, easier & cheaper than pulling your truck out of the water, after soaked in salt water, truck is garbage any way, better, most important, check out ramp before launching boat, even ones you normally use, know because conditions might of changed from the last time you used it, time well worth it, just a little walk around, better safe than sorry, less expensive too, if you need more motivation !

@rjwintl8 ай бұрын
wheel chock size does make a difference , However , so does the ramp angle 📐… lotta ramps are really too steep being steeper than 7degrees because whoever ( VA DWR or private ) puts them in would use More concrete if the angle of the ramp was shallower and consequently take more money to put in … I made my own chocks from wedges cut from a 24 inch diameter oak tree … works better than the store bought too !!!

I just commented on the previous vid, saying I didn't think that thing would work. I'd love to have such a shallow, clean ramp as that one! Ours is steeper and green n slimy...

In a pinch, if you dont want to spend $30+ and you have some tools, you can use an old tire. I have a couple that ive made and they work great.
@daviddura11728 ай бұрын
something I noticed... at 359...401 as the boat slides up the trailer, the angle of the trailer LIFTS SLIGHTLY the back of the vehicle reducing the tire contact (and traction, adhesion ) to the ramp.......
@WayneTheBoatGuy8 ай бұрын
Yeah that's why ideally a wheel chock should be tested with the boat and trailer because those kinda things could mess it up

Is the stopping power of the wheel chock different if you change the orientation? So that it still wedges but doesn’t flip over so easily, maybe the hypotenuse should be contacting the ground for maximum surface area and lowest center of gravity. Could be another interesting thing to test but I see now that you mentioned that towards the end of the video. Awesome stuff as usual Wayne!
@WayneTheBoatGuy8 ай бұрын
Good point. Also testing it with the pull and weight of a trailer could change the effectiveness.

@nalvarez35058 ай бұрын
Keep in mind that when you have the trailer attached to the truck there's more weight and I think the idea isn't for the shock to stop the truck by itself but in combination with your brakes the shock add more surface to the truck on the pavement, now me i I put my tundra wheel drive while dropping off my boat just in case some happen the already on 4×4

I would try getting a truck wheel chalk if you’re gonna try a test with a truck, sir you’ve got a wheel chalk for like a Honda Civic and a wheel on your truck as far too big for that type of wheel chalk as you call it so to enhance your videos and help others explain to them that the chalk you have is for a compact car or a car and not a light duty to medium duty trucklet alone truck. I was gonna worry about my truck in a boat ramp would like a wheel chalk for a semi. They’re not heavy. They made a rubber and they’ll definitely stop your pick up without a doubt.
@ian35808 ай бұрын
Like others have noted, you are using a wheel chock that is too small for the tire size.
@AN-kg4ei6 ай бұрын
I think you need larger chocks and should use 2. If really steep, use. I dont even trust 1 with the boat trailer on driveway and jack down.
@WayneTheBoatGuy6 ай бұрын
Several people mentioned the size of the chocks. What’s interesting is that when we shop for these at places like Harbor Freight they don’t specify what size tire or vehicle they are for. It seems that to get chocks that would work well with a full size pickup they need to be bought from suppliers who focus on commercial and industrial applications.
@schoen88ss8 ай бұрын
That's not for a full-size truck. Looks like a wheel chock for a compact car or small utility trailer.

Sorry Wayne got a call BS on your wheel chalk. It’s way too small for full size pick up truck. I’d be hesitant to use that on a large riding mower. I use on a 6 x 12 bike trailer is a lot bigger and it don’t move on a slope, wet ground all that can change thingsto three times the size of what you’re playing with so buy bigger chops and try again you may be surprised
