I'm 73 been all over the west coast, been around salt water and freshwater fishing since I was a kid. Back in the late 50's I remember boat ramps getting a regular cleaning with wide push brooms. The brooms had metal brushes and the workers wore rubber wet suits and strange looking shoes. The cleaning was at low tide. The slime that was scrubbed off turned the water green, plus the ramps were ribbed more than they are today. Anyone else remember the boat ramp cleaners?

Today they use power water jetters on the private ones, but public ones who knows. I water ski'd off an old ferry ramp on the Severn River in the UK, that river has the second highest rise and fall of tide in the world. So nothing sticks to that ramp and that went for cars left on the ramp while the owners went boating. Coming back to cat & trailer gone, the police would know the culprit though.

Best slip fix Ever! Floridians may scoff at this idea but it works. To slay those steep slippery ramps use 'plastic' snow chains. If the vehicle is front wheel drive, one tire should be enough. I'd do both if rear wheel. There's a trifecta of issues. The tongue weight of the boats vs rear weight of the vehicle with the pitch of the ramp. The high temps bolster the algae bloom. Unfortunately low tide risks too much vehicle in the water for some. A new small business Alfred! If a vehicle is in jeopardy they could sell them on the spot and put them on right there on the ramp. Unlike metal chains they won't damage the ramp, less stress on tires and they won't rust.

Is considered a sign of weakness in Florida to engage the four-wheel drive while pulling out your boat or are these just a bunch of software engineers that bought macho-looking toys that they have no idea how to operate? 1. Lock in the 4X4. 2. bring a little bag of sand/gravel and get some grit on that slick stuff (I carry one over each fender well all winter long). 3. have someone with that boat in gear giving you a little push, push! 4. Do most of your untethering and loading before you tie up a ramp space. 5 Leave the main hook attached on steep ramps until your boat contacts the water. 6. once you attach and reel the boat up on the trailer, pull it out and do all your other crap in the staging area. Or, if you want to continue to do it your way, Alfred will be recording and we'll be watching. Your dime.

Many vehicles still on the road are part time 4wd, which means they must be put in 4wd by the user either with a lever, button, or dial. Otherwise it's in only 2wd. Newer full time 4wd and awd systems (they are very different and should not ne used interchangeably) do not require that user input they just are in 4wd all the time or automatically engage the other axle as the one slips in the case of most awd systems.
@2009dudeman3 жыл бұрын
I think it's a combination of not having 4wd for many down south, and not paying attention or being too dumb to pay attention to ramp conditions. I launch and recover in 2wd all the time here in Michigan, but i'm smart enough to have good tires, and not back my tires into the water (your trailer should be setup that most ramps do not require you to get your tires wet to launch the boat). I also give a visual inspection of the ramp before I back down and lock in my hubs if I think I might need 4wd.

10:08 Be sure to have your little girl stand in front of you when an anchor line is used as a tow line, so she can help deflect it when it snaps. 11:18 The best place to stand when your vehicle is being towed up the ramp is directly behind it, so when the lines snap, you can just catch it and push it up all by yourself

I have seen a lot of videos of the aftermath of this, but this is the first time I've witnessed it. It would be helpful to build a list of "don't's" for everyone. Here is what I saw: 1. Avoid launching at low tide if possible 2. If you have 4WD, lock it in 4WD 3. Unhook the bow safety chain and strap before you begin to back in the water Minor items 4. Don't use an undersize tow vehicle for the size of the boat 5. Make sure you have good tread on your tires.

@@tomkiefer2386 Yes. 4000# Jeep is no match for 5000# boat and trailer on a wet 20 degree incline. They should teach this in high school physics. I have seen Jeeps ( though any such sized SUVs apply) shoved off the road and flipped on the highway by heavy boats on trailers. Not having the boat still tied to the trailer could help on launch but I have seen boats slide off the trailer too far up as well. Glad no one was hurt here. A large tupperware of dry rice and the Jeep will live.

Seems like the Park Rangers should make everyone fill out a pre-launch checklist before letting them past the front gate. Fail the checklist and you go to the back of the line. That might eliminate many of the delays on weekends!

It appears to me that it went under when he jumped out. Worse thing you can do is take your foot off the brake. With your foot off the brake you are relying on just the rear axle. Not sure if it would have saved it or not. Sorry for their loss.

Of course think about it. What holds a vehicle once the rw have 0 traction are tge front brakes. Once you release it you hypotgecally have it in neutral until it regains traction. Sorry but no common sense was used in this case

@MrOmvijoca3 жыл бұрын
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 Hi. The technical problem is that the emergency brake is for the rear wheels only. And if the rear tires are being lifted and floating, only your foot on the brake - this is - applying only the front brakes- then..... those front tires are the only thing that will keep you from sliding further back. Don't take your foot of the brake!!!!!! The front tries that is. Hopefully this isn't too confusing.
