I went vegan for a year (between 2022-2023) and lost 3 stone in weight. Still can't decide if it was because the food was healthier or i was just less included to eat it coz it didn't taste as nice! The alternatives are massively better than they were 20 years ago (I should say meat alternatives, I was vegetarian when I was younger for 2 years, its never stuck for long I miss tasty food too much) but essentially they don't taste great as you're finding out. I never understood for the most part why they wanted to market meat alternatives to people who don't want to eat animals (for the most part lol). The worst offenders imo are fake bacon, chicken, and minced beef (quorn). Replicating texture always seems to be a difficulty. The fake sliced sandwich meats are pretty dire too. Cheese has to be made with coconut milk usually and to me that leaves an awful after taste (id recommend the nutty cheese or smoked ones if you want to try a vegan cheese). Then the milk? Where do you even start. Almond, oat, soya, coconut? they all seem to taste like sugar to me. (After a year fully vegan though, everything else tasted incredibly sweet). Great video and look forward to seeing if you try any more from the range 😂

The difference in colour on the sausage rolls might be due to brushing the meat one with egg or milk before baking.

It's exactly that . Can't use milk on the vegan one as milk isn't vegan . Hence it's ghostly appearance . I was actually surprised how good the vegan one tasted , tried it out of curiosity . Always interesting to watch meat eaters try vegan foods. Would be fun to see you try and eat vegan for 1 week! The reason the vegan sausage roll is pale is because they use egg wash to make the pastry go golden although I do think greggs under cooks them as they can go browner than that. Vegans don’t eat/drink dairy milk because the reason cows produce milk is the same reason humans and all mammals produce milk, to breast feed their babies. Dairy cows give birth produce breast milk and their babies are taken away so humans can milk them and consume their breast milk instead. I've tried a few meat alternatives and found some are OK, although I wouldn't say I've found any to be superior. One of the things I do find is that often the vegan alternative is much more highly seasoned, probably as the meat substitute (soya, pea protein or whatever) is generally much more bland tasting than real meat so more salt and other seasonings are added to give it some taste.

As someone who worked for a bakery brand owned by (and later rebranded as) Greggs as a kid - the meat products are browner because they have an egg/milk wash. Those things aren't vegan, so the vegan products aren't as brown. I've had both sausage rolls and I find the vegan one more filling, so it saves you a bit of money, I suppose. Also, I don't know why nobody has labelled vegan beef products fake steak yet. Greggs could have a fake steak bake. The stuff they layer the wafers with in Kitkats, I've heard, is made up of other, broken Kitkats, so that's probably why the vegan chocolate has affected the wafers too.

I've been vegan six years and I came into this thinking it was just gonna be another "vegan food bad" video but your opinions seemed unbiased. I haven't eaten a animal based sausage roll for 10 years but I can remember liking it more than the vegan one but everything else I honestly believe the vegan version smashes the animal based ones. But I think a lot of that may come from knowing the horrors of animal agriculture and I'd rather not be part of that. The only thing I don't bother with is vegan pizza, not because they taste bad but because they are always really stingy with the cheese unless you get the pizza hut one.
