The LV paints look like they were made by Sennelier. The tubes look similar and Sennelier are French. Sennelier paints are known for requiring a few layers. I’m not sure how these hold up to the actual Sennelier paints but I have the full range of 98 colours in 10 ml tubes and it cost $289 when I bought them. Sennelier have been at least rumoured to private label for other brands.

I'm 99% sure that these are rebranded Sennelier paints. The paints are high quality, not worth the money, but still high quality. The fact that your painting didn't look muddy after layering so much says that the paint had little to no fillers. The Sennelier paints I use perform almost the same. You feel like the pigment payout isn't there, but once you build up the painting, things start coming together. Usually even higher quality Watercolors start lifting after 8 to 10 layers. And the colours start looking muddy. But the Sennelier paints are formulated such that they don't have much pigment, but they layer really really well. (I've made paintings with 15 to 20 layers of Watercolors and the paint has not lifted!) Hope this was helpful.

Rae's not the person to do this as she's very much NOT a watercolorist, but I can tell you right now. Van Gogh student grade paints are better than this, and cost about a euro a tube in Europe, and $3 a tube in the US, or $25 for a set that size. A set of 10 tubes in an artist quality brand like M. Graham, with tubes 50% larger, will run you about $120. With that $1600 budget, you could easily get yourself an EXQUISITE setup of the finest paints and cotton paper, porcelain palette, brushes galore, every type of watercolor accessory you need. Then I think how ripped off I'd feel if I spent $2000 and received 10 department store quality paints packaged in a maybe $10-15 acrylic case with some LV pattern slapped on it. I'm not knocking department store art supplies by the way they're great if you don't have a lot of money, if you're a beginner or if you just want to play around and experiment without the pressure of "wasting" expensive supplies. I think that brush type is a quill. They typically have the metal bindings around the base of the brush. It looks like a synthetic fiber brush because the bristles are retaining their shape and have more snap than a natural hair brush. Watercolor brushes tend to use very soft hair like squirrel or sable. The hog bristle brushes are meant more for acrylic and heavier bodied paints.

i don’t think so, because sennelier is known for how well their paints reactivate and how pigmented they are (because they use honey as a binder unlike many cheap brands). you can see in the video that the LV paints basically do the opposite of that. besides both being made in france they don’t have anything in common.

While the coloring pencils had a really nice leather case befitting of LV name. For either case, you can justify the price if you're only looking for their appearance. This one has neither, The bottles looks cheaper than $10 paint, label made from paper, the case is just acrylic with LV stickers that you could probably manufacture for less than $7. The most expensive looking thing on the case was the small belt. Honestly, I was expecting something like the coloring pencils's case instead of just acrylic case.

In order to get a better result with watercolor swatches, etc. you should use watercolor paper which is sized specifically for the paint. Another thing is watercolor paint from tubes vary in pigment so putting the same amt. of water on every color can be a hit or miss. Instead of flooding the paints in water I would suggest taking a different palette and grabbing paint little by little and mixing in the water. And on your commentary about very transparent, that is what watercolor is, a transparent medium. You build the layers. But apart from that, I would never spend 2000 bucks on 10 colors.

I'm not talking up for the paints, but I'm just saying that transparent is the name of watercolor. No watercolor performers well on regular paper, better to use 100% cotton. Paper, prewet the back to help stop buckling and leave the white of the paper act as your white. The paint shouldn't lay opaque & even without dimension.... oh there isn't any pigment info because they are obviously dye based. So have not any pigments. But the #1 watercolor test is how do they feel when dry? Chalky is bad. I'm hoping for another video with proper watercolor swatches. Black sharpie line with full range of transparency of hue. The thing I think what frustrates me is they aren't being transparent that they're mostly using the cheap supplies as just a placeholder to showcase the container. That's what it is. They don't want to pay much money on the actual supplies because they're focusing more on the container than the supplies that it's holding. The reason why some more expensive art supplies focus more on the product than on the container because it's the art material that's more important than the container. But honestly? I prefer that over an overpriced container. But then again, I don't trust any fashion designer company because they have some icky backstories for a lot of them like Channel being opened by a person who was a spy for the Nazis.

As someone that works at an art store, that is called a quill brush. They're usually more expensive than your standard rounds, while the round maybe $10 the quill of a similar size would be like 25. they hold more paint or water than a standard round. As someone who only bought cheap brushes until I started working at the art supplies store [discount], I love the $25 quill brush I bought recently, it is so amazing. I've never knew there was an actual difference in brushes and you are getting what you pay for. And how brushes look is deceiving the synthetic natural hair ones usually look really ratty but once you put them in water and use them there awesome. That Louis Vuitton paint is really gooey. Just the way it's strung out of the tube.

Aquarelle is French for water paint. Luis Vuitton is French from France. 😆😊

The paints look fine, not $2k fine obviously. But you're supposed to layer watercolors. I work on the same piece for weeks because i put down layer after layer with sufficient time in between for the paper to dry, i don't think it's fair to over dilute the paint and then expect that to work. Especially since depending on shade you have a range of different opacities from semi transparent to semi opaque and opaque.
@jesstolley71932 жыл бұрын
Nahhh... these are fine if you count them as student grade paints. And even then, some brands' student paints (like W&N) look way better. Mind, I'm judging by how they looked when actually used in artwork, not just her initial swatches. Having to use so much of the paint to get vibrant color is testament to how little pigment is actually in them.

That is a quill brush. The wiring is the type of ferrule. You’re used to manufactured crimped ferrules. This is the ORIGINAL way ferrules we’re made before machinery. These are the types of brushes I use. They often are made using natural hairs or a mix of natural and synthetic. These are my favorite type of brushes.

Oddly, I'd love to see you do a painting with water color paints from the dollar store, and do the same painting with LV. I think doing so will really help them understand just how seriously lacking they truly are.

If I can offer a tip. I saw you mixed the watercolor and water together in a ratio to get paint. I was taught not to do that, just leave the paint as it is out of the tube and load the water on your brush, then you can drag the paint out. It helps when you want to get a more saturated color, because you can control the water in it.
@amyx2312 жыл бұрын
I use it that way. But I usually use pan colors, or pre-dried tubes.
@sablemoreno50952 жыл бұрын
I personally hate fresh tube paint for that reason. I place it in a palette or in a pan and let it dry because I never liked/learned how to do the mixing with the paint completely fresh

I'm from Sweden, and usually use a swedified version of the word aquarelle (akvarell) for all watercolors except those really cheap ones made for children. They're the only ones where we use the swedish word for watercolors (vattenfärg).

I wish these fashion brands collaborated with the likes of Caran d'Ache or Faber-Castell to release art supplies that would be worth that price tag, this business model of using such low tier material is just disrespectful
@sablemoreno50952 жыл бұрын
People are saying sennelier, but I'm not 100% convinced. There are similarities, but the way rae used them isn't the way I've seen most others use the paint (ie fresh tube with bunch of water vs letting it dry or at least harden a bit then add water) so it's hard to tell if the OG swatches being so pale were because they're extremely pale (filler) or a true high quality transparent (sennelier) that just had lots of water. I haven't had a chance to use sennelier, but I know I have some cheap transparent paints that look like that specifically.

Two things I would like to say, first, the hair for the really good Japanese watercolor brushes from squirrels. The brush looks like squirrel to me. Second, serious artists don't buy fashion labels on their art supplies. This is the equivalent of the rockstar heating up his beanie weinies on a Gaggenau 14,000 dollar cook top just because he can. For watercolor, I'll just stick with my Windsor-Newton.
