Temperature AND humidity play a role in keeping produce crisp and hydrated. The fridge door is the warmest part of your refrigerator (because it goes through drastic swings in temperature and humidity when they are opened and closed). If you use your herbs fast, it probably won’t be an issue but if you notice them wilting quickly, you may want to rethink their placement. Also, keep in mind the plant hormone, ethylene, which is a gas that fruits and veggies can either emit or be sensitive to. Ethylene is basically the hormone that causes produce to ripen. The general rule is that most fruits are ethylene producers and most veggies are ethylene sensitive. If you store a item that is ethylene sensitive close to an ethylene producer, the ethylene sensitive produce will decay much quicker. Try to keep them separate to make sure you get the most shelf life out of your produce.

I love your herb shelf! I use three drawers to keep produce, meat & cheese separate. I also seem to have an inordinante amount of cheese for a two person household, lol. I do a weekly purge of the produce drawer and the shelf for lefovers. We always have cooked rice in the freezer so anything I'd otherwise dump turns into fried rice, soup or an omelete.
@delirium129 Жыл бұрын
Hi! For the herbs, apart from putting them in a glass with the roots covered in water, what I do is wrap the glass with plastic wrap (covering the leaves too, obvi). That prevents the leaves from turning yellow and drying out in the cold air of the refrigerator. I've done this mostly with culantro (aka recao, not cilantro) and it lasts for as long as two weeks or so.

These fridge and pantry organization videos are so enticing and aesthetically pleasing, however I found most of the recommendations to be impractical. I read produce should not be cleaned until you’re ready to eat otherwise it goes bad faster, and I also ran into the same issues with space and other people in the house staying adamant about putting things back where they go. I ended up with a bunch of plastic containers we no longer use in order to make space. Lol Great video tho!

Exactly why i didn't try this! Family was dead-set on keeping things status quo and it became such a hassle to fight over this.
@cherryblossomings Жыл бұрын
I always thought the same thing, but once I tried out this method, I actually wasted less food. It takes so much mental energy to cook during the week, so having freshly washed produce ready to use makes such a big difference. Even if unwashed produce technically lasts longer, I've tossed so many soggy greens and spoiled herbs because I avoided using them in favor of more convenient options. I really wish I was the type of person who could keep track of everything in their little bags, but for now I need to see it all front-and-center! Agree that the most aesthetic option is certainly not the most practical, though, and function should be the highest priority.

I try to a quick clean through at least once a month, it usually ends up being at least once every 2-3 months. But the first thing I do is any bottles, packs and container I go through and throw out anything out of date as I’m emptying everything out. This actually cuts my time in half since I started, sometimes when I wait till longer bc of work schedule this will actually get rid of 50% or more of stuff. Since I started this I don’t even have to ask my roommate if he wants to keep anything, I just send him a text with a pic of things going out and I tell him I threw away everything out of date

@scottrobinson9334 Жыл бұрын
One thing that will help to keep space down and save money with no waste is to not just restock the same things, I know this is one we all do, some (like myself) more than others. We have those specific things we always grab weekly and then get home and have some left from before and later have to throw out at least one or two of bc they expired. With me it’s sandwich meats. Also it helps to take those left overs and think of ways to make them into new dishes, bc honestly none of us really use leftovers after 24- hours and if we do we don’t really want to. But making them into new dishes and using what I have left over from stocking up the previous week instead of getting new stock helps invent new dishes on the fly and saves me at least $50 a week since I started. It does take some getting used to though and some extra diligence at reviewing inventory but is totally worth it. At the very least that’s $150-$200 a month you can be saving

It's a fun video to watch - especially seeing the beginning and then the end result. However, I don't know if it's practical long term. Berries and such shouldn't be washed until you're ready to eat them as they'll go bad quickly. Your cabbage needs to remain in a plastic bag in the veggie drawer or it'll dry out and wilt quickly (I rinse mine and then wrap in a paper towel and tossed in the veggie drawer, which then allows months of storage). I always love the idea of herbs sitting in a container of water in the fridge, but they just don't last as long. Just wrap them in a paper towel and then seal them in a plastic bag (you can wash parsley and cilantro, but mint and basil don't do well washed before storing).

Viewing this from France (KZbin algorithms ?) I've been looking at a few videos from this channel and I have to say that American Fridges are pretty seriously build, very big and shining and strong, but you should consider to build the houses in the same way, actually they look like nut shells to me ! like the house of the second little pig in the Disney animation movie ! I've been seeing the video about your house remodeling, and I was very much amazed by how shallow was the house ... I am very sorry for you about the whole experience. You seem to recover well, I would have been crushed ! I wish you the best with your home and more important with your family.

Homes in US are built for the region. I’m sure you haven’t been to all 50 states, but most homes are brick. In really hot climates not so much but your Disney reference is so not US as a whole and likely of a specific home/videos you saw. U.S. homes are bigger, too. Plus many have air conditioning… something many French homes don’t 😂
@tarantellalarouge76326 ай бұрын
@@AskMiko I don't know everything about houses in the USA, but air conditioning is not a sustainable solution, it needs a lot of energy, spit a lot of calories outside ... most of the very warm countries have survived without air conditioning and I hope it will go on for the survey of the climate on planet earth

Ugh God cleaning out the fridge is the worst especially as I have a weak stomach! In Ireland the standard fridge freezer is half the size. A lot of people have larger American size fridge freezers but not every kitchen is built to fit one in whereas there is always room for a standard one. I would like an American sized one but in a way it doesn't allow us to build up a huge amount of food with things lurking in the back. Obviously it still happens but not to a huge extent.

Just a note to folks doing this on a budget: Please keep your fridge doors shut when possible. Your fridge detects the temperature and works extra hard to keep things cool when it starts to warm up. Standing in front of an open fridge and talking like this lets all the cold air out, making the fridge work harder, costing you more energy and risking damaging the motor sooner. If you want to look at your shelves while planning, take a picture on your phone/tablet and then close the fridge. If you aren't actively taking things out, putting things in, taking a quick picture or video, measuring (so you can get correctly sized storage containers for your set up) or cleaning, those doors should be shut. Your electricity bill will thank you.

Stop calling the dates on the food expiration dates!!! They are sell by or use by and are not a statement if the food is unsafe to eat. They are arbitrary dates set by the manufacturer on their perception of the quality before and after the date. FUN FACT… the only food in the US required to have a true EXPIRATION DATE is baby formula.
