I Took 7 Dragonfruits And Grew 1000 Baby Dragons

I had no idea, but dragonfruits have a couple crazy secrets - they only take one year to grow - and it all happens on just one night in the summer on the cactus plant. Plus, they can bear fruit for up to 30 years, so commitment here was worth it.
Of course I had to find out if this was true, so 2 years ago I got my hands dirty with 3 purple dragonfruits, 2 yellow dragonfruits, 2 cactus pears, and cactus pear pad.
I wanted to see if I could grow 1000 baby dragonfruits in my own home.
And by the way, if you didn’t know, pollinators of dragonfruit cacti are nocturnal creatures like bats and moths.
What happens is, the cactus plants that dragonfruits grow on flower in just one year, then the fruit grows out of those flowers on just one evening per summer when the bats and moths come to drink the delicious pollen from the flowers.
Those nocturnal creatures transfer this pollen from flower to flower. Then the fruits pop out after that one night the flowers get pollinated.
And they can even live in pots indoors, but those can take 2-3 years to bear fruit.
BTW - if you’re growing dragonfruit and want an easier way to extract the seeds for germination, just cut a piece of fruit and dab it on a paper towel. The seeds will come right off, and then you can shpritz that with water, fold it up, and seal it in a little bag or glass jar and wait for the tails to grow!

Fresh nopales need to soacked first to get rid of the slime as well as you can boil them first and then soack. Also as long as you shave off the thorns, you can eat the skin! You can also buy them already in a jar, or fresh at the store.

Yeah, @@growithjessie try getting a jar of them from the store to see what they're like processed. Are you a vegetarian? (You've never mentioned it.) If not, I recommend that you look for a recipe for nopalitos con puerco (nopales with pork), which is kind-of a stew type dish, like almost-but-not-quite chili. It's a family tradition from my grandmother. We usually eat it with tortillas. (I don't have the recipe; Sorry.) I can also easily imagine grilling up some nopales with scrambled eggs or in a chilaquiles omelet. After you try the jarred product you can decide if you want to learn how to process them. (This is something I need to learn, as well. I want to grow nopales cactuses, too.)

I would also suggest you get more tender nopales from the top of the plant, those are easier to eat and you only need to take off the thorns. No hard exterior to worry about.

So, from the Rio Grande Valley, here. Normally, we like using young cactus. The cactus which is thick, and hardy, is not exactly great for eating. You want the young ones, which haven't gotten their thorns yet. Consider the thorns as a sign or warning that you missed your chance. The young pads, are easier to grab, and put on a grill, after having removed the premature "thorns". The flavor is way better, and go great with just about any thing, like eggs, or picadillo. Some tortillas de maiz with nopal on the grill is a great meal, and very healthy! Hope you look into it, and enjoy!

We’re on the same path now … but, it’s pitaya (a similar cactus) instead of pitahya (your dragon fruit) … the babies are awesome! Down here your prickly pear cactus fruit is called ‘tuna’ … jijijiji … not fishy at all … and the nopales are amazing delicious … there are ways to avoid the sliminess when cooking.

Hi,there i came across your video..one quick tip-im Mexican and i love cactus..but those big cactus you got are too old to eat.You actually eat the fresh green(i hope you understand me)like the baby ones.So you only cut the thorns out and cut them in squares or thin pieces. To cook them you DON’T have to soak them in water,just put les than a spoon of oil put cactus let the slime go away and add tomatoes,onion,jalapeños if you want..a sprinkle of oregano salt and eat then in tacos..Hope my tip helps..but Don’t soak pleaseeee! Also you can cook them with eggs too…or make a cactus salad.

I have been growing dragon fruits from seeds for approcimately 8 years and they still didn't flower or fruit, although the plants are pretty big now. Last year I managed to get cuttings from a mature plant and I read that this method takes 1-2 years for the plant to produce flowers and fruits.

When it comes to my dragon fruits, it is possible that they didn't bloom because during the first 7 years I did grow them in a really poor soil, like my terrestial cacti but now I now epiphytic cacti require more nutrients. Admire your perseverance over described "years" to give your offspring a fighting chance in the opposite of tropical conditions. Here in Southern California a new massive dragon enclave near me recently opened its gates to the general populace so we could see these unusual red and yellow dragons babies up close and personal we strolled the shaded acres where their parents hung out, their laden arms slouching over wires strung on posts to support them - much as grapes are supported. So in our region, instead of your snow in winter we have too hot sun above so the babies don't die of thirst. Good luck with your future dragon babies. May they grow tall and healthy to one day produce their own dragon babies. Am trying your experimental techniques of paper towel swaddling. 🤗😁

The duration between watering is different to the amount of water you give. You need to water them more (in quantity) but leave them longer between watering.

In Mexico we cook the nopales boiled and we cut in little pieces and we mix with onion, tomatoes, (i don’t now the name of these in english) cilantro, and a little of lime and thats a good combo from your tacos, yes, is a little bit slimy but if you doing right it taste grate!! My grandma has Nopales in her garden, we only cook the "tiernitos" (young ones?), before they get tooo big so the one that you cooked looks like something we would plant to grow, not cook. We remove the thorns only, not all of the skin, and theres cooking methods for it to not be as slimey, but I think other comments have that covered.

Hi, what did you feed them? I have a couple dozen that are 10 months old. They are over 12" tall, but veey skinny. But, they are starting to grow side growths. Just concerned thwy have weak trunks and wont fatten up to support the rest of the plant

The best way to plant nopales or catcus pads is to lay them flat on dirt so it doesn’t fall over when it grows ( like the one you picked up) - the best way to eat them is to first scale them like fish and then boil them or soak them overnight to get rid of the slime then cut them in slices and fry them with onions and peppers and sweet potatoes and put taco seasoning on them and use them as a taco filling

@growithjessie I would try to fill up mason jar half full with warm water and shake it real hard with the piece of dragon fruit loaded with seeds in it to see if that would extract them....

What I found out was, if the Dragon Fruit is picked too early there will be no taste. And that's why they dont have any taste because they are picked early to ship all around before they can rot. If they wait till they were tasty they would be rotten by the time we got them.

The cactus paddle you cut into is to old. Smaller more tender paddles are used in nopales salads and with meat stews. They don't have all those threads viens when you cut into them. Make sure to boil also to help get rid of the slime.

Definitely would recommend grilling or scorching the outside skin when eating to get rid of the slimy flavor and it’s so good with a little char ! Salt lemon SO GOOD. Just scratch the cactus with a knife to get rid thorns, cut up In strips and grill

Typically it's the tender nopales that are cooked in eaten. The bigger ones are tougher and harder to cook. You can buy them canned or find a Mexican restaurant that serves them. They are good when made properly.

You should get cold hardy native Canadian cactus opuntia humifusa, opuntia polycantha , opuntia fragillis there extremely cold hardy and can survive outside,

You’re being in Canada/growing indoors means you’re always gonna run into issues with the long leggy growth because they simply aren’t getting enough light. It’s called etiolation.

Pretty sure they were shriviling up because they need humidity, in my experience anyways. And it takes waaaay longer yhen a year to get a fruit from a seed grown dragon fruit. More like 5 years lol
