I recently agreed to bring national level 12 year old runner Maya along to the 5km course of Woking parkrun. Not wildly dissimilar in pace for a sub 20 5K at the time, Maya has an incredibly positive and balanced attitude towards running for someone so young and her record breaking run at Woking was nothing short of amazing.

My 11 year old daughter runs a 19:23 right now and it's the same. They make it look so effortless. I could never look that good running. Just keep them healthy and having fun and don't burn them out.

Exactly. Breaking yourself for faster times never works. What I take away from children runners is mostly: if you relax and have fun and follow your dreams without restraint or negativity, the world is your oyster. Yes, running is hard, but our adult minds sometimes seem to just make it even harder.

This girl motivated me to get out there today and do a park run. I went absolutely guns blazing and totally unexpected, managed to beat my PB of 22:46 I set 6 years ago, when I was 16 years old with nice time of 22:09. I haven't been doing a lot of running and resiliently moved my attention back to running because I’m training for a OD triathlon. This girl motivated me to push my self today to a pace that I didn’t think I would be able to hold and I’m really grateful for that. I will do more park runs form now on. I’m hungry to brake 20 min in the foreseeable future.

Incredible. I have been running since I was 10/11. 46 now. Just done 18:02. The difference with Maya and me back then is encouragement. Kids need encouragement for confidence. There is these 2 very young "superkids" girls, 10 and 11 years old in the city where i live, they are running ridiculous times allready. The 10 year old : 600 meters (1:41.32) 3km /street/gravel race: (10:08) 5km : (17.34) 😲Her mother won the silver medal over 10 000 m at the 2006 European Championships in Athletics in Gothenburg, Sweden in 30:32,26. The other girl, 11 year old : 600 meters (1:48.20) 5km in a horrible windy and hilly gravel course (19:24) 10.2 km street race with 600ft of climb (42.36) 👏It is both scary and so much fun at the same time being witness to these kids just flying ! Great advice from Harry for Maya to take the first part easy then ramp It up. I always tend to go off way too fast then pay for it at the end. A negative split Is always the way to run a good race & this probably contributed to Maya breaking the long standing course record. Well done to a talented young lady.

I love seeing people doing park runs. I fondly remember doing my first parkrun when visiting Australia 6 years ago. I have been living in Colombia for the last 6 years and unfortunately they do not have park runs here. There is a great running and cycling culture in Colombia. If you have any connection to parkrun I would love to see them expand into Colombia and I would happily volunteer weekly at the events so others could experience one of the things that hooked me on running. Bring Parkrun to Colombia!!!!
