Oh yea we did that back in the 80’s. But it is so messy. That’s the drawback. It also makes my lashes more “crunchy”. Drier formulas work better. Not as messy. But it deff looks more dramatic if you’re in the mood. My sister used to have me hold a tissue to protect her eyeshadow when she did hers growing up Lol what else are little sisters for

Not that I don't believe you but I don't remember this technique from the 80's. The one my sister did was apply the mascara then take a sewing needle to separate them. Sounds scary I know but she never once poked her eyes. We have long, thick/full, curly, black lashes to begin with (Thanks Dad! ❤) Well, 2 of us do. What we were looking for was separation. That's still the same thing I'm looking to achieve so no. Won't be trying this. Another reason? I know it's easy to get mascara off the skin but I detest having to do it. I get a little bit irrational just waiting for it to dry so I can, lol...

@@veronicamcminn7775 Doesn't it seem like it takes forever to dry, too? LOL! Yeah, I'm glad as well. I use to sit there just watching her do it. She spent the most time on her lashes out of everything else, haha. Though she no longer does the needle "technique" 😬 mascara is the only product she'll put on now. I use to love watching my sister and one of my cousins put their makeup on. My cousin would really take her time doing a full face. And her nails? Omgee, they were LONG and beautifully done. That was in the 70's. She didn't have our long lashes so it was falsies for her. In fact until I started watching beauty YT I hadn't seen anyone else using falsies in my neck of the woods. Oh, the memories... 😁

Way back in The Olden Days, when I was just learning about makeup, I read a tip to apply your mascara first, and then your eyeshadow. I did my eyes this way for years. I got out of the habit as I got older, but with Chris's mascara technique, it might be a good time to try it that way again! His way does produce a fatter lash faster. I think I'll play with it, too. Thanks for the demo, Charlotte!

Both look great, but I don’t know if I see enough difference to make me want to put up with the extra amount of mess and clean up to get to the small amount of extra volume? Maybe for a night out or special occasion rather than every day? But then I can see myself being fully furious if I mucked up a really good eyeshadow and made that part look worse! Really interesting to see though - will look forward to seeing how you like it as you continue trying it!

Thanks for sharing this technique, it gave an amazing lifted and voluminous look to your lashes. In my opinion, with that technique it looks like your lashes were thicker on the part that is closest to your lid, compared to the way you regularly apply mascara. Both sides look great, I think it is preference in what look you want.

I was wondering which mascaras would work best for this routine as well. My lashes are so thin I definitely have to use the wand wiggle (technical term) to achieve volume. I’d like to try this but may try it with a lengthening mascara wand just to see if it makes less of a mess but still gives me some volume.

Very interesting indeed! Your lashes always look great but that technique is more of a dramatic look. I wiggle at the base and roll my wand out as I blink. That’s not messy at all. Also, if you wait until the mascara dries you can scratch it off your lids with a spoolie without messing up your eyeshadow, for those that don’t know. Please do give us a follow up on the other mascaras. I’m going to try it. Thanks for sharing!

I love the look it gives you, it’s awesome! I’m with you, not down with the mess…but I might have to give it a go because I do love a fat, dramatic lash. Also, I don’t know if you’ve tried using a dry brow spoolie to remove the transfer from your lid once it’s completely dried? I personally find it affects your eyeshadow/make up underneath considerably less than using a q tip as it just dry brushes it off - not my idea, got it from Sali Hughes! Thank you for another fabulous video and I absolutely LOVE that Lisa Eldridge lipstick…may have to come home with me! :)

We’ve been putting mascara on for decades and it’s funny how we don’t even think about doing it… We just do it. A while back I was purchasing Charlotte Tillberry pillow talk mascara. On the website it was a video on how to apply. Again, like I’ve said who even thinks about watching a mascara application video🤷‍♀️… Anyway I watched it and it held my interest…. Video talked about how the Charlotte Tilbury mascara wand is flat on one side and bristles on the other… In the video the model demonstrates that the flat side of the wand is to be placed at the base of the lashes and push them up. Hold that wand up against the base then twist and blink at the same time… It was a little awkward at first. I’m so used to combing the wand through that it took some time getting used to the “ twist and blink“ technique 😄… it worked really well and similar to this technique..👏👏👏👏

I have one that is a more traditional bristle brush (Covergirl Exhibitionist Stretch & Strengthen) and one that has a plastic bristle brush (Vivienne Sabo Cabaret Premiere). I usually try not to make a mess with my mascara, but if I can get the technique to work and clean it up without disturbing my makeup, it will make for a great application technique to have when I'm feeling more dramatic! :) I will definitely make a note to have a clean, dry spoolie on hand for clean up.

That's my issue too! Thanks to lash serum, my lashes are pretty long, but it's the volume that I'm after...and that's what makes this so tempting. 🤔 On the other hand, my lashes grow and naturally want to stay straight down so if I don't get a good curl on them, then the effect (pointing down from the "back-combing") would be there to stay. If something weighs them down then I'm dunzo. I'm hoping someone of there can speak to the lash curling issue. ❤️❤️❤️

you can get exactly the same look without the weird mess by just using a decent buildable mascara and wiggling the brush through the lashes (which deposits more mascara)and building it up while still wet. Hourglass caution/estee lauder lengthening mascara (the original one) do this perfectly and don't clump up or give you weird lumps on the ends. or just use a decent lash base coat like lash paradise, which will give you 3x the length and volume with no mess and fussing about.

I felt your own fanned out look actually looked better on you because the other technique made that eye look heavier and more closed, I think your lashes are already voluminous and lovely. That said I have fine eyelashes but they come up alright with mascara and this new technique worked well on me (and no mess) strangely I found it a lot easier than expected. So I think the final verdict is, women with sparse or fine lashes would benefit, but those with already nice lashes may look too heavy and unnecessary in my opinion x

I love this new technique, but the mess it leaves, not so much. Have you tried the mascara first and then the shadow-just a thought?!

How you cleaned up the mess would have been nice.

I prefer your old technique. It looks more fanned out, defined and curled and less messy.

Hi Charlotte! Your lashes always look fabulous. To me, the difference is not that significant; i.e. when face to face, people would only notice the difference between the two sides if you asked them directly which eye has the longest and most voluminous lashes - and the women would resent you because they would think you’re taunting them ; )

Been doing this for years. Nothing new. I have straight lashes and I have to curl them. Doing the technique kills my lash curl.

Looks great but I thought we all learned after the 2000s that backcombing is terrible for hair strands

Well I get mascara on my lid with your way. If I try his I’ll have a huge mess. Lol. I think I like your normal way the best. 💖💄👄

although the right eye looks a touch thicker, its not a huge difference and the mess isn't worth it!
