This should definitely be remade in future when video ideas are running low- but instead of "i tried boxing like ippo" it would be "i trained like ippo for a month/extended timeframe", where you just sign up at a boxing gym train for the month pure boxing with ippos style. That way you can actually absorb some pure boxing fundamentals instead of imitating them from a jkd base, and you would have a lot of footage to use instead of trying to squeeze every technique into one sparring session. And it would probably help your overall game too tbh. EDIT: im realising that this is basically Seths Muay thai yearly series, but hey those were good videos too

Kinda requires the explosiveness of someone like Mike Tyson just to function. I mean, if you use it just to land a single hook, great stuff, but if you want there to be several in succession, you have got to move, so you'll probably need hella leg muscle.

@Ingeb91

@@pantasticlaire3966 Yeah, definitely. it's an all offense, minimal defense sort of sequence. And when executed with boxing purity, with your weight behind every hook, it is brutal as hell. But that's the thing. try to catch your own hook and spin it around when you're putting your weight into it. It murders your quads. My point about having to be ridiculously strong and explosive to get this to work still stands.

I loved Ippo back in uni. Channeled his determination to get through some tough exam periods. Years later, I got a job around the same area of the city where my student part-time job was and it kept throwing my mind back to Ippo. I'd been wanting to train in pure boxing for a while, so I joined a boxing gym near me. Would play the closing theme on my drive home every time. One of our pro boxers did a podcast recently. When asked why he got into boxing, he cited watching Hajime no Ipoo when he was 16. I had no idea lol

Definitely a difficult style to put into practice especially if you're used to out fighting, but if done right simultaneously stepping shifting weight while also throwing is very effective if the opponent is going back in a straight line, just remember what coach said short steps shifting your weight to the opposite foot keep your head off center

Really fun video. I feel like the Dempsey roll is really hard to practice in sparring because a big part of it is approaching while doing the head movement. The problem is that it's sparring so your opponent probably isn't that afraid of your punches because you don't want to hurt him(unless you want to be a jerk). So he won't back up from what should be powerful punches. I think that's where Mike Tyson's peekaboo style works better since it has similar forward movement but also to the side of opponents so you don't need to rely on your opponent backing up to keep pushing forward. Hmm, perhaps a future video if you collab with Jared again🤔

Okay so I had to comment. Ippo is one of my favorite anime period and I think something that really gets his Dempsey to work is the pressure. He’s usually not getting caught up in head movement (specially when he really relies on it) and because of his guard he just tanks hits. That and if you really wanna make it work I’ve have some success with really getting into damn near clinch distance and keeping the turns as tight as possible and even then you can really only get like three or four shots max before it’s a good idea to clinch or cut out.

Bruce Lee loved Dempsey and the shovel hook. See all the stuff about "shifty blasting" in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do sections on infighting. The anime's portrayal of the peak-a-boo style does get one thing right and that is that the slip also serves to load for the hook, and that becomes the start of most combinations. Its the footwork and evasion that really makes the peak-a-boo special, not the punching. I've experimented a lot with trapping off of the peak-a-boo style. So (ideally) I'll slip outside, shovel hook to the liver with the outside hand, pin the elbow with the inside hand, and finish with an elbow over the top.

@@metrolinamartialarts Honestly, if you can effectively slip and d'amato shift (aka tyson hop) to get outside of their shoulder already loaded to act, then you're really in such a superior position that you can do whatever you like -- trap, strike, sweep, enter the clinch, etc.

You already admit to not liking the Dempsey roll (the real one I hope) which is fine. A problem with the Dempsey roll and peekaboo style it's super committal. That's why shorter heavier fighters like it is because plays to their advantage when they'd be at disadvantage other wise.

*KEEP YOUR GUARD UP!* You're shorter than most of your opponents in this video, you're boxing & your hands are down half the time! In TKD or JKD you can let your hands slip lower to protect more from kicks, but in boxing you need them much higher. Footwork and core control can also help you slip and dodge better. That vertical uppercut could be useful, tho... Especially if you get them used to tons of normal horizontal punches!😁

@@KickyFut now that I think about it, guard placements probably gonna have a lot to do with height differential. I'm pretty short, and even at a lean fighting fitness level I'm still pretty heavy so I nearly always ended up against a taller guy. Transitioning from tkd to boxing to mma my gaurd was always on the higher side but my tkd guard reaches out quite a bit more than the guard I use when I had fights in the cage. Funny enough I didn't really go through the usual struggle of adjusting my boxing for mma because my boxing crouch already puts me in a good position to intercept shots.

Don't wanna bring you down,but those hooks in the sparring footage looked REALLY sloppy. I know it was supposed to be rather playful,but you lost your form completely and you were looking away constantly. Also your very bladed stance seems to be doing you a huge disservice in this purely boxing context,as there are times you almost turn your back completely on your sparring partner. Kinda sucks that they didn't even attempt to punish any of those mistakes. Your headmovement (other than looking away) was good,tho
