The trick to vegan and vegetarian food is to think of it as its own thing and stop trying to think of it as a substitute for something else.

As a vegan I think it is great that you are open to trying new things and share it with everyone as a meat eater. For sure there will be food that is more to your taste than others, my only advice would be to not generalize one vegan sushi or croissant to all vegan food in that category. Every restaurant has their adaptation, some like to do stuff from scratch, others to use processed raw material, and in that sense, it is like trying a Mexican restaurant or an Italian once, and maybe you didn't like that restaurant, not the possibilities of the type of food. Hope you enjoy it and keep trying new things!
@cora0420Ай бұрын
Exactly this! Just as not every croissant at an omnivore place is up to your taste, the same will be true about croissants at vegan places. + If you're used to the taste of meat, fish, eggs, milk and so on, trying alternatives that you're not so used to mostly will taste a bit "weird" at first because your taste buds have to accommodate to the different taste over time to feel like second nature. (That's the thing that happened with milk alternatives. Most people find the taste weird, if not unpleasant at first, but if you drink it for a few weeks you will begin to like the taste and trying cow mothers milk after that time without it will taste weird to you, even when you loved the taste before.) Our body is fascinating:))

As a general rule, most of the overly specific replacement products (like vegan salmon) will be a disappointment. There are some exceptions. Like many others have commented, it's best to have a "does it taste good?" attitude rather than a "does it taste the same?" attitude.
@delphzouzou4520Ай бұрын
It would be easier to do that if they stopped doing things that ressemble salmon, sausages, chicken, etc... You buy "vegan salmon" and it tastes like carrot, because it is carrot. Of course you're disappointed. Plus, it's not because they look similar that they have the same nutrition input. They have to reinvent the marketing and create their own vegan things without trying to trick our brain with meat like things. If you're vegan and stopped eating meat, then don't eat things that resemble to meat.

One interesting replacement in sushi for salmon is a special marinated watermelon. It's still not quite salmon but it is very nice. I saw it on an iron chef episode They take a rich kombu/shiitake dashi, simmered down to concentrate the flavor and add a good soy sauce to it then they take cubes of seedless watermelon and pour the dashi/soy sauce over it and put in a vacuum chamber/ container and pull a vacuum a few times. It pulls the air out of the melon and sucks the dashi in. It turns a lovely deep reddish color. I tried it at home for fun and we used it in sushi it actually tastes lovely and not quite fishy but of the sea. We do the watermelon and juice trick too. Have you ever harvested or chose a meh watermelon? Well just grab your favorite juice and put in vacuum container/bag and pour the juice on. Pull a vacuum a couple of times and it flavors the watermelon with the juice. My grandkiddos love the surprise flavors. We've done white grape and white grape/peach flavored juices

The problem is that some people that want to be/try to be vegetarian or vegan, want the food to be like meat; and I’m one of those that can’t see myself being fully vegetarian or vegan because it’s not exactly meaty enough. Also I’m big with authenticity, and it’s hard to make vegetarian or vegan authentic enough to taste the same or similar. It might be easy for some westerners to go vegetarian or vegan, but as a Asian American that would like to potentially duel citizenship with the eu/uk; and my cultural background is not going to convince me that most vegetarian or vegan food is going to be meat like enough or authentic enough for me to be happy. In general i can be vegetarian and vegan partly when I want to be, but will be more flexitarian of different diets/lifestyles.

On my list for places to try: Veganaa (mongolian vegan dumplings) Vegan food isn't that hard to find in Vietnam - the problem is that most places that offer meat don't offer a vegan alternative and vegan places don't offer any meat. So whenever I go visit my family in Saigon I end up eating too much meat because we go to places that only have meat as most family members don't want to go without meat. I'm only a flexitarian but I really get tired of meat in Vietnam quickly. My family indulged me once by taking us to a buddhist vegetarian all you can eat place and for only 80.000 đ (less than 4 €) there was a huge selection of different vegetarian Vietnamese food!

I’ll get futomaki and then eat around it so my last bites can be all kanpyo 😂

My easy hack for dairy-free whipped cream (if you live in a city, I can't usually find it in smaller towns) is to buy a can of coconut cream and then put it in the fridge overnight. I add some sugar and vanilla extract and whip it up. It definitely tastes more like coconut than whipping cream, but I like the flavor, and it's so nice to have it in the cupboard and not have to go out and buy fresh cream every time! Also lactose-intolerant friends are always very appreciative.

The fun part is that the more you look, the more vegan foods you'll see around! It's always a fun time for our house to see a new vegan thing and taste test it. Sometimes they are SO GOOD!! And sometimes I'm surprised they got past product testing 😂 Like many other comments, it is really important to look at it as it's own thing, and look for dishes that are trying to be good food, and not just vegan. Really delighted to see you willing to try so many things outside your food comfort zone! I hope you find lots of other really delicious vegan things you love!

My best vegan food experience was in DaNang and Hoi An. Being an Indian vegetarian living in US, i had never felt any vegan food to be tasty and flavourful, that i would choose it over regular vegetarian indian food, but my trip experience in Vietnam changed that prejudice. I hope you would try next time you go back to your home country. Banh mi and pho were my favourites!

I've been vegetarian for about ten years, but I've kind of always liked fake meat better than real meat? It's a texture thing, for me. The vegetarians I know have pretty mixed opinions on the subject of fake meat. I think the stereotype is that most people go vegetarian/vegan for very strong ideological reasons, but in my experience, lots of us just don't like meat that much, and have medium strength moral convictions.

It makes me so happy when people give vegan food a chance! Really glad to see you be so open-minded towards trying vegan food. ☺🌱I have to say that even though there are lots of vegan "meat-like" substitutes out there, in my opinion the best vegan dishes are most of the time the ones without them. Lentils, chickpeas, beans, nuts, tempeh, seitan, and tofu make incredible vegan sources of protein. Many vegans and vegetarians I know, including myself, most often appreciate the flavors those ingredients bring by themselves over vegan meats. 😄 I know that you wanted to try and see how similar vegan meat tastes to real meat and that's totally alright! They're usually 50/50 in being a hit or miss though hahaha. Indian cuisine has a lot of great vegetarian and easy-to-veganise dishes. I really recommend you trying those out sometime! Love u always Uyen. 😽💗

You can make the water from canned chickpeas into a cream like substance by whipping it or using coconut cream . Margarine /butter can be used as a substitute for butter. Almonds and nuts can be used as milk for vegan cheese. Sorbets can be used blended (basically like blended up and frozen fruit) & coconut milk . I just know as some of my mates are vegan & I am allergic to wheat and eggs so I had to learn to cook.

A few things I'd like to mention: 1) "Seidentofu" is amazing for deserts! It's light and fluffy and my absolute favorite desert is a Mousse au Chocolat with Seidentofu 🤤 2) Most vegans chose this way of life because of ethical reasons so we accept that some meals we'll probably never taste again for a good cause. To us it's worth it to sacrifice a few food items for the greater good. So after a while we start to forget the taste of the "old diet" that we had before. So our taste changes. Most people are super used to meat, milk, cheese and so on... But when you change your diet you adapt and get used to other tastes. So to most of us it's not important that things taste like meat or saussage or cheese. A few vegans never liked that taste in the first place and a few vegans are disgusted by stuff that resembles dead animals. So the things that resemble meat are mostly for new vegans that want to change but are still very attached to these kinds of food (like junkies getting Methadon 😂) - it makes the change easier. For some of us it's a once in a while thing and then there are many people who aren't vegans but want to switch it up from time to time to eat cruelty-free meals more often 😊 I think only a few vegans eat things that try to resemble meat regularly... At home I only cook with vegetables, beans, mushrooms, things like that and maybe every 2 or 3 months I buy a Schnitzel or something like Vischstäbchen... Because it's nostalgia 🤗 But going out to eat in a restaurant is always an adventure 😍 I don't mind if the meals immitate something or are just their original as long as it's super tasty and it mostly is ❤

"... to eat cruelty-free meals ..." I salute your good will, but you are fooling yourself it you think that life can ever be cruelty-free. At best, it can be cruelty-mitigating. What do I mean by that? As an average person the food you eat is mass produced. That goes for animal products as well as plants. We don't need to go into the animal side of things, because we're all aware how bad some of that can be. However, in order to mass produce plants you need to deploy insecticides as well as use methods of pest control (e.g. small rodents, snails). This typically kills them or at the very least deprives them of their ability to survive. Why is it that we're seeing a general drastic decline of insect populations all over the world? Why is it that a lot of smaller vertebrates are on the brink of extinction? Because humans need food, that's why. And that's not even going into the negative effects of transporting these goods, the enormous amounts of waste (of perfectly good food just because they don't meed industry standards visually), packaging and storage. Yes, I'm well aware that animal products incur all the same bad effects - but again, if we think that eating vegan means eating guilt-free, then that is simply not the case. My personal solution, after living vegetarian and developing all kinds of food allergies because my body is a dork, is to try and live consciously. Whether that's waste reduction, getting involved in local attempts to better life (e.g. voluntary work at a shelter), tamping down on greed, or simply buying locally and seasonal (if you live in an area where they grow more than potatoes and blueberries) - it doesn't matter. All is good, every attempt it equally valid. We do what we can, as we can and remember to be mindful of our own needs while we do so. I've come to terms with the fact that I hurt other life by simply existing. But I also understand we *all* do and the trick is to give back as I can. And I sure hope that when I cross that rainbow bridge, the gods will see things my way -.-
@Flo-vn9tyАй бұрын
@@p.s.shnabel3409 It's not only about insects etc. It's also about working conditions in the production of the food etc. A cruelty-free diet would also mean no vegan chocolate for example.
@leza4453Ай бұрын
@@p.s.shnabel3409 while your statements are true, I want to add an important further fact: Imported grains and oilseeds go mostly into animal feed (almost all south american soy, for example). Also, animal feed has lower quality standards for pesticides. You need way more acres for producing plant foods than animal food. A vegan consumes way less soy than a meat eater through his animal products.
