The Tower of London is an easy three hour or so experience. If you aren’t interested in much other than the Jewell’s it is a waste of money, but those who enjoy history can certainly get their money's worth in time and exploring. I’ve been three times now and still find it fascinating. Although, the first couple of occasions it was £29 or so… not £34. Those busses though!! Worst of the lot. Uncomfortable, cold and can’t see the sites on the opposite side as someone usually stands in the way to get a picture. Better just getting the tube to the nearest station and walking to them.
@mads501525 күн бұрын
What on earth?! The Tower of London is brilliant! One of the best historical sites I’ve been too in the world in my humble opinion and I’ve travelled to every continent bar Antarctica. You hardly went to anything in there. So many interesting historical characters passed through- the armoury exhibition is incredible, the Bloody tower, torture exhibition and crown jewel exhibition are excellent and lots of information . You can do beefeater tours and see the ravens too. And they do seasonal exhibitions. If you are looking for real tourist traps I’d say avoid the Clink museum, it’s very small.

The aquarium IS very pricey, but it's also very well done by the look of it... and they have to feed and care for all of the sea creatures, and keep all the habitat clean and safe for them, so I can easily see where the money goes (I have never been, TBH, but it looks like one of the better aquariums in the world). The Eye and the Shard are total rip-offs. Both big nopes from me. Have a web search, and you can find other free places to go for a good view. The Tower of London is truly a must-see for history buffs, but you did yourself a massive disservice by not joining one of the tours led by a Yeoman Warder. Those blokes are hugely entertaining, and they give you context for what you're looking at. Advice for any tourists enjoying Ed's video: go early to avoid crowds and massive queues to see the Crown Jewels (I've personally never bothered, but that's just me!) If you are a true hardcore history nut, you can attend a Ceremony of the Keys, but you need to book well in advance. It's a quick ceremony (happening 365 nights/year for centuries), but a cheap way to get a small taste of the place, and very spooky at night. Again, the upkeep for such a massive ancient complex is mind-blowing, so I feel it's worth it to go at least once. Hard Rock? Meh. Tussaud's doesn't appeal. Never done the bus, but I suppose if you only had a day in town, it's an easy way to see highlights. Thanks Ed! You always make me smile. I'm glad you found that lovely little clown fish. BTW, I was taking a work-break... can you tell I didn't feel like rushing back??? Thanks for indulging me! ;)

The museums are incredible and free. I lived in the National Gallery, and the British Museum is incredible. I also loved that I could find the remains of the Roman Wall (free), walk over the Tower Bridge, and around the Tower of London (free), find Execution Hill, walk around streets with a view of St Paul's (free), explore the docklands (free), find where famous people like Turner and Jane Austin lived (free), enjoy the oldest pubs in Wapping (cost of a drink) and enjoyed reasonable priced lunches at MacDonald's, Burger King, and KFC. I went to supermarkets for ingredients for dinner and breakfast. My only souvenir was a metal TFL endorsed Underground roundel. It proudly sits beside my Route 66 road shield. I was impressed by how much London has for the tourist on a budget.

I do generally agree about the eye, but to be fair, it depends on what you are doing it for. I took my elderly Dad on it a few years ago when he was just about mobile. We pre-arranged his visit. They took really good care of him. My Dad used to work in central London as a policeman, policing Parliament out of Cannon Row. He had not been back to London in over 20 years. He could see all of his old work buildings and told me lots of stories. We were very fortunate with the weather though so had perfect views. He still occasionally mentions the trip on the Eye that we took. So for me, it was worth every penny.

A lot of the things are so that kids have something to do. There are so many brilliant historical sights but the aquarium, Shrek, eye, Leicester Square etc are to get the kids enthusiastic. My only advice about London is - don't do someone else's holiday. If the Eye is something you always wanted to do ... then do it. Yes there are free ones but if it's on someone's bucket list ... they can decide if it was worth it. To me, two of the best free things are the Mithraeum and the amphitheater at Guildhall but it's not too interesting for kids or people who want to go there on a pub crawl.

I always like to visit the Tower and just do different parts of it each time. Forgot to mention the fact you can get a joint ticket with Madam Tussaud’s, the London Eye, Sea Life Centre, London Dungeon and Shreks Adventure, bringing the total cost of it down. Or just get the Merlin Pass for unlimited visits for the year if you travel up often. If you’re paying each separately then yeah, the prices are bad for what you get.

Love the concept of this video! With traps like these I always tend to value them at what it ideally costs to run them. Jewels sitting in a display that you walk past? They’re paying for what there? A wax museum with a ride, theatre, probably a solid aircon bill? Makes a bit more sense. Usually aquariums make the most sense, especially with a wide selection of animals, due to upkeep and whatnot… but they’re still so expensive and once you’ve seen one they’re all fairly similar.
@amzee204Ай бұрын
There is quite alot of maintenance involved in looking after the crown jewels. Pretty much anyone who does is some sort if specialists. They require more maintenance than you think particularly as alot of them are very old.

The £35 covers more than just the crown jewels. That's the cost of entry to the Tower of London, which includes beefeaters wages, maintenance and training, and the maintenance and I guess security of multiple buildings, which are 600-900 years old. Conservation is really expensive.

While I mostly agree with your review, I just don't understand how disappointed one can be about the Tower of London. The building is massive, you can walk almost anywhere with different displays in each part. The main tower in the middle is a fascinating expo of old items, the crown jewels are cool, the walk on the walls offers really nice views of the shard, the city and the London Bridge and the place itself is really cool just to wander around. didn't you have also people in historic costume walking here and there ? And bonus : the M&m's shop I didn't it existed. My wife and I came nearby one night and it was still open, not many people, we didn't buy anything but just visiting the shop was fun enough. What I most loved about London ? Walking around near Buckingham, the Mall, Trafalgar square, Soho, Westminster... We did so many things on foot and... most museum are free ! National History Museum, National Gallery, the British Museum... It was a blast. It's been 10 years, but the memories are forever.

Although like with a lot of tourist attractions (both good and bad), it's best to get something like the London Pass and then plan meticulously to get the most out of it. As opposed to paying full ticket price for each attraction separately. Usually they include those awful buses or a boat trip to Greenwich (as well as most of the attractions there). Honestly, maybe I'm in a bubble, but I don't know anyone who has ever told me: "We went to [destination] and immediately went to Hard Rock Cafe, it was awesome!" But clearly there are in fact throngs of people obliviously queuing up for Madame Tussauds or M&M's World, so what do I know? MT is especially interesting because it's been a big tourist attraction since the 19th century. I can't imagine this kind of attraction lasting long in the era of the internet and social media. It seems like the Western equivalent of the greasy dude welcoming you with a hearty "Hello my friend, 5 dollars for a tuktuk ride, special price just for you!" Why would any discerning person want that? But I could be wrong here, again, living in a different bubble. And the alternative is not much better when you type a destination into TikTok and you see the absolute garbage that gets recommended to you.

the worst part is, it wasn't even rage bait haha

Hard Rock Cafe was really a waste of money and extremely undewelming. Paid almost £100 for 2 meals and wanted more out of me for merch.

Until a few years ago when the hotel was taken over by someone else, I always used to take friends to St Georges Hotel next to BBC Broadcasting House. The restaurant / bar was on the 15th floor, and you had amazing views of Central London. My Adopted father worked in the old hotel and I was working there from as soon as I was allowed on school holidays, and it became one of those places where you'd save the £30pp going on the Eye. The wheel in Hong Kong cost me less than a fiver, and even though not as big as the eye, it was so much nicer in terms of seeing the city.

I remember sea life as a kid, I loved it. I also got a plush sting-ray and named it Sandy as a tribute to one of the dogs my family had before I was born.

When I visited the Tower of London I was also 25 years old. I absolutely loved it as I am very interested in historical places. When I visited my entry fee included a great walking tour. Did you take that? In my opinion the Tower of London is a definite must see and worth the price if admission. I would not consider the Aquarium to be a tourist trap either. I liove a good aquarium! I don’t mind the costs as I know it requires a lot to maintain everything and keep the animals healthy. This too is a great educational experience. The Hard Rock Cafe and M&M store….skip those.

When I visited the Tower, I joined a guided tour with one of the Beefeater guards. He was brilliant, very entertaining and informative. Do they not do them anymore?

Me and my wife skipped Tussaud, London eye and Sealife Aquarium that is near the London Eye. But we visited almost all of the free museums in London and it was very interesting!

My only experience of a Madame Tussauds... I got creeped out by the statues and belted through it in 15 minutes, I almost bumped in to 'Will Smith' and apologised to him, he didn't answer. He was wax. He just stared off in to the middle distance... Much like I did after my visit... Free tickets, not worth it.

The wax Musium is certainly looks interesting. Worth it if you have a merlin Pass. Same with Sea life. One thing to note with sea life, you can go to Chessington and have sea life, a zoo and theme park attractions for the same price. The London eye, is a landmark. I don't like your assessment of the tower of London, its expensive but does have the history to reasonably back it up. There are other options like Winsor castle, or a English Heritage or National Trust membership. Where you can so somewhare with the history but less tourists.

I went to M&M world in 2015, I spent £20 for personalised M&M’s. They packaged them in a plastic cup, like a Starbucks cup, except it didn’t even have any branding on it. If I’m paying TWENTY POUNDS (back then you’d get the same amount of m&m’s for £2 at a Tesco and they’d come in a bag!) the least you can do is package them properly. Absolute worst of the tourist traps.

Lived in London for 5 years. Visited the Tower of London the last week I was there and I'll be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. I agree it's overpriced, but if you're a history nerd there's a lot to enjoy. Edit: After reading all the comments I now realise how redundant this is 😂

What you need is a time machine and visit Tussauds before it had that stupid indoor rollercoaster and when the end attraction was the Planetarium and the Tower before 1980. The Eye was a novelty when it first opened and was way cheaper. And you can say the same for most sites run by English Heritage which toward the end of the 80s started charge stupid prices for places you used to be able to walk around for nothing.

Last time I went to London (in 2023) I got a tour pack, which included Madame Tussaud's, London Dungeon and London Eye and paid 60 GBP for that, which is not bad I think. Even London Dungeon alone was worth it all.

They are not tourists traps in my opinion. If you are a first timer in London you want to see these things. It is part of the whole touristy experience. They are also fun! I could spend hours in Madame T. goofing around and taking funny pictures. Worth the 25£!

You can have an equivalent day out here in Hanoi for about a tenth of those prices.
