Love this! The honestly and realness about setting a high goal and not achieving it is very relatable. I'm a SUP instructor and lake surfer, and I know from teaching and my own surf journey that learning any physical skill requires patience, rest, and allowing yourself to fail again and again. Ego be damned! It makes the victory that much sweeter and more meaningful!
@Thoughtspresso3 жыл бұрын
the evolution of michelle getting over the part of herself that pressures her into constant perfection is the true inspiration of this challenge, not the backflip itself. I spent so many years being afraid of trying new skills I know I'll suck at, or being obsessed with something til I get it right. What I needed the most is seeing Michelle, of all people, saying I don't need to be perfect today. I'm happy with what I learned today. I can always go for a few more sessions. I can keep trying. I can keep learning. I don't have to be perfect on day one. Thanks, Michelle.

I personally think the best learning sequence is: roundoff back handspring, then roundoff backflip, then standing back handspring, and lastly standing backflip. That's how I learned, all on my own. Never had a single gymnastics class. I had mastered cartwheels and roundoffs for years. One day, I saw a kid doing flips. He told me I should just give a roundoff back handspring a shot. I did and the rest is history! The standing backflip came probably 6 months later after a lot practice. This was over 25 years ago! Now that I'm in my 40s, I can still do a standing handspring but I've lost everything else. I miss that sensation of defying gravity. Don't give up.

As a longtime professional in the realm of gymnastics/tumbling/acro, I was really excited to come across this video but I have to admit it was a bit hard to watch. I apologize for being insensitive to the people who put their time and energy in, because my issue is not with them specifically. Their intent and motivation was great, they had the right idea with the few drills they did, and other than the incessant spotted back tucks to the point of exhaustion they mostly executed safe spotting techniques. It’s more in the misconception of what is a “professional” in this case. Michelle usually gets such prolific, knowledgeable mentors for her endeavors who are not only masters at doing but also masters at teaching; I feel like she did not have that in this video, and ultimately it was not the best representation for our sports. Knowing how to do a skill and being certified/proficient to teach it, are two very different things. Someone who competes for UCLA is not the same as someone who coaches for UCLA, or someone who teaches gymnastics as a profession; ultimately they’re still just a student, not a teacher. Similarly, someone who competes at worlds as an individual is not the same as someone who is well versed in coaching and teaching the tumbling for that worlds team of up to 36 synchronized athletes. Not to mention there are important safety reasons why coaches and instructors have to pass testing and attain credentials to be able to safely and effectively teach these kinds of skills… It would be like doing the Fire Academy video and the mentor is just another student or recent graduate of the Academy, instead of the actual Chief who is at the pinnacle of their craft and a well established safe professional to learn from.

Tumbling is such a great workout bc it works such different muscles than you would ever work in a gym! To stay in shape as a former cheerleader I still go for a run/walk and then tumble on my air track for a bit! It seriously keeps my arms, abs, and legs so toned!
