Currently I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad mini. While I love and prefer the form factor on the mini, I would trade it in a heartbeat if my MacBook and iPad could be one device. Currently I have specific programs that aren’t available on iPad I need for my job and it’s not feasible for me to switch to iPad as my main device. The last bit that file management is why people are asking for Mac OS on the iPad and also instead of Apps driven thinking as we do on iPad, it should be files driven on iPad and we could just do with the iPad only setup as well… it is the multitasking (without stage manager or with stage manager I don’t care but without the limits and restrictions of stage manager) and a few more tweaks to make it more files driven than apps driven and nobody would ask for the Mac OS to be on the iPad. Worked for 2.5 years on my iPad and made an iPad only desk setup. I also have the m1 iPad Pro… I bought the Mac mini m2 recently and it blew my mind… I find organisation in clutter of files and apps that I open with one flick on the Magic Trackpad and I am in mission ctrl… however when I am on the iPad the focus driven workflow that it has to offer makes me feel at home as I had done it for 2.5 years. It makes me more productive in the work that I am doing… but I feel restricted coz of the above factors.

Mac has a lot of hidden features that you might like. It works perfectly with your iPhone, iPad and AirPods. So if you have those, try Mac and you’ll not regret. But if you don’t have an iPhone or AirPods you can stick to windows cuz you’re used to it.

If you are at home, you can use a bluetooth mouse to connect to sidecar in clamshell mode but you have to use the bluetooth mouse or trackpad and bluetooth headphones. Set it to optimise for the iPad's screen. You'll have to go to the desktop first to activate sidecar (mirror iPad screen) and then close the lid, then click the mouse that is connected to the MacBook to wake it. It'll wake to the mac lock screen on your iPad. Every time you want to use sidecar in clamshell mode, you have to do this. The advantage is that it will fill the iPad's 4:3 aspect ratio and optimise for it.

iPad sales would increase, and perhaps MacBook Pro sales would stay the same, but MacBook Air would crash so hard if they did this. MacBook Air costs more than an iPad Pro, and even with a price hike, or only the upper 1tb being able to have this, a touch MacBook is the endgame for any creative professional. That leaves a MacBook Pro for true heavy work, but an iPad could manage both iPad tasks, and MacBook tasks, leaving the MacBook Air in a small niche market. Even now it is in a position where older MacBooks or the MacBook Pro are better deals. In my opinion, if a 2 in 1 was made, it would come either as a MacBook Air killer (iPad Ultra you may name it), or as a new MacBook Air with no iPad related software, simply the touch functionality and maybe Apple Pencil, but at that point you’re sacrificing iPad Pro…either way, one of these has to go because the market already overlaps enough that a new product would just kill them both.

They want you to buy multiple devices. It makes them more money and makes you more likely to stay in the ecosystem. If the only devices you have are an iPhone and an iPad with MacOS, then that’s not making them that much money and if you ever decide to leave Apple, you only have 2 devices which need changing, which isn’t much. That compared to if you bought an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. At that point you’ll probably buy AirPods or an Apple Watch or something as well. Now you’re deep into the ecosystem and bought several products. Apple doesn’t want the iPad to be too much like a computer. And they don’t want the MacBook to have a touch screen. It means people will buy just one instead of both. Not as good for getting people invested in the ecosystem.

Regarding your sound issue, I’ve been doing this for a few years… jumpdesktop works great and I get audio. I can edit in FCP and everything, and as long as my internet connection is solid i get near flawless playback.

I’d love MacOs on my M1 iPad Air! I love my iPad though, I don’t like many things from Apple but iPads are the best tablets and MacBooks are the best laptops, especially from longevity. I still have my late grandmothers 2010 i5 15inch MacBook Pro and it still works fine for normal internet usage and some other harder stuff, even some gaming. My MacBook Pro is a 2018 13 inch perfectly fine, doesn’t even feel old. In my reseller business I also used to sell a load of MacBooks and old MacBooks are still good! Sucks that a 2006 MacBook is more usable than my 2010 Mac Pro but apart from that Apple kills every other laptop, tablet manufacturer when it comes to longevity. Not gonna switch back to iPhone from my Galaxy Flip though, nor am I gonna switch from my home built gaming pc to an iMac or something either.

The ability to have your primary Apple Home Server that you connect every thing too and only grab the local interface like the iPad glass screen to see and work on content means we are so much closer to Apple Home being a thing. People never seem to discuss the two elephants in the room - battery life and security model. I suspect the battery life by transplanting macOS on iPad would be pretty bad - iPadOS and iOS is super aggressive on pausing/terminating apps, which is not how macOS manages the processes. 13-inch MacBook Air has a significantly bigger battery than the 13-inch iPad Pro, and for a good reason. I agree the Files app is in an abysmal state, and 'pro' apps on iPads aren't great, as well as how iPadOS doesn't let you manage long running task, but I suspect the solution isn't as simple as just transplanting macOS. There has been attempts to have 2-in-1 OS, like Windows 8. And when it comes to Windows 2-in-1 devices they aren't doing amazing, and previous attempt of Windows+Android 2-in1 was cludgy at best. Desktop and Tablet experience is hard to merge.

I've never been a pro macOS on iPad guy for these reasons: 1. There isn't enough i/o. A single port isn't going to cut it for everyday use 2. macOS isn't designed for touch, meaning you're almost forced to use it with a pencil, trackpad or mouse. I like using my tablet as a tablet 3. I feel like macOS would be a horrible experience on the smaller screens I'd love it if Apple kept making iPadOS more advanced, opening more up to software devs to be able to make more advanced apps and for them to promote app development at the sane time so that iPadOS gets macOS level apps. Heck, since they're on the M series chips, even just some way for the mac to run macOS apps would be great.

im definitely with you here. the problem is exposing any designed for macOS on iPadOS is just gonna be a poor experience if you're not connected w a mouse (which my iPadPro technically is 95% of the time as it is docked so ports aren't an issue) I knew there are lots of ppl who would be willing to have a Frankenstein experience mixing touch apps w a few macOS apps that happen to run in iPadOS but this doesn't sound like the Apple Way...

that's the rub - his point that the iPad is the best tablet means it will continue to live in this alternative paradigm for as long as the market will bear. the second you allow macOS on the iPadPro, all the lines get blurred & developers no longer get to see what users experience purely in iPadOS and answer the question of "how do we move away from organizing data without files (aka Finder)?" I bought the new M4 IPad so I could stop carrying my work laptop everywhere. I work a ton in my car and on planes and this switch has been great. There are a few things I don’t like as you mentioned the file management software on the IPad is pretty lack luster. But for me other than that it’s been amazing and I can not beat the battery life. I can use it for a full day plus of work and still have battery left over. Where as if I use my Windows laptop it get like 2 hrs or so of battery out of it and need to take a charger everywhere with me.

Apple is a hardware company, it sells devices, that's where the main profit comes for them, that's what allows them not to sell user data in advertising market, as some others do. So it would be not exactly smart for them to blend 2 hardware categories into 1. Now what actually makes people prefer their devices - is the user experience, which is 90% in software: it has to be THAT good for us to choose their devices over a myriad of other options. That, in theory, would allow Apple to change their paradigm and switch to a software-profit company, and let us install their iOS, macOS etc. on a range of other devices, even from different manufacturers. Would you pay for iOS to have it on a Samsung? I think i would.

The issue is just entirely the OS experience. Apple clearly wants to start with a tablet OS and add features over time, whereas with the Surface Microsoft just bolted a desktop OS to a touch screen. I hate using my Surface as a tablet since the UX is awful. I think Apple is 100% coming at things the correct way, it’s just that iPadOS will take time before it can hit feature parity with MacOS.

I just spent 3 weeks w PC gaming handhelds & it's the same thing - they are jimmying Windows because they don't have any choice from a performance & 100% compatibility w existing games. but it results in a poor experience. ASUS didnt do a bad job w their overlay software, Lenovo was a total fail in my book, and Valve has the most professional console UI but has to turn to translation layers to run Windows titles & discovered I don't want to tinker when I play a game. Proton is nowhere near the seamlessness of Rosetta which is just magic! all that said, my patience did wear thin & ordered a MBP this past week after going iPadPro only for 4 years!

@@udance4ever Yeah, Valve is kind of trying to win an impossible battle when it comes to getting PC games to work well in a handheld. It's honestly incredible how great of an experience the Steam Deck is considering everything working against it. I love mine, but I also appreciate being given the keys to set my own framerate caps, graphics settings, and power targets. Luckily the Switch has a great library for anybody without much interest in that side of things.

iPads not having macOS, or not being able to run apps made for iOS with full features is just Apple being Apple. No other company would release a calculate app and be like "We did it! We gave people what they wanted!" I think iPads are great. I have an iPad Pro, but I really just bought it for the bigger screen. I think actual Pro users would hate the new M4 iPad Pro since it can't really do many of the things that they want, or at least not smoothly.

You could try running source connect Nexus on the mac and ipad and steam the audio alongside remote desktop. I've done it mac to mac between my home studio and my work studio and that works. If it works fro mac to ipad OS you would have video and audio.

Since the first big iPad Pro...all I have wanted was a base which was Mac and you docked the iPad for Screen and Camera. Pull them apart, iPad OS device and MacOS base which could be connected to any display with cable or wireless connection.

wow this is a really good idea 💡 I had a colleague let me borrow a broken screen MBP2015 & it either goes straight HDMI or to get rid of the double keyboard clumsiness, I just control the MBP desktop through Screens. (it didn't occur to me to do the same thing remotely like Andrew did!) I've been debating just tearing off the top lid on the MBP (it's useless outside of the camera which still doesn't get used) & your comment is neat because you're right, it would be neat to dock my iPadPro as the top lid!! I just ordered a new MBP & this whole time I've been debating if I'll be carrying both & if it were just the "base" and carrying a versatile "screen" this would be golden indeed!

I've used the surface for 3 years. The interchangeability is fun for a month. After that the form factor is getting annoying. Apple is doing right for keeping their OS where it belongs. But I do think you should be allowed to install MacOS programs on iPadOS. There's no reason not to.

Yes my brother, tell ‘em. I been using my iPad Pro for years. I use it more than my phone. I needed to use adobe’s apps and they either don’t work on iPad, or they are horrible and buggy. I’ve been waiting for the oled iPad for years, and I’m in love with the new iPad but I didn’t like that they didn’t improve the battery life. I have the m1 iPad Pro and as a heavy user, I have to charge it every 2-3 hours! It runs out of battery so quickly and it takes forever to charge. I was very close to getting the new surface pro, but I just couldn’t. So, I got a MacBook Pro with m3 pro chip this week, and the difference is very noticeable. It charges faster, lasts longer, can handle heavy tasks, apps work better, texting is easier, and the fact that I can move the cursor from the MacBook’s screen to the iPad, then drag and drop files between two different devices so seamlessly makes me glad that I didn’t switch to surface pro. That would’ve been a huge downgrade and a big risk for my data and privacy. Comparing Apple to Microsoft is like comparing Bentley to Honda. No matter how hard Honda tries to copy Bentley, it will never be close. The services, the quality, the design, the warranty, the innovation, the user-experience is just something else.

Great video ! As a web developper, I have done something a bit like that. I bought a Raspberry Pi, installed raspOS server version on it and code-server, then on my iPad I simply connect to the raspberry with an SSH app and code with code-server on Safari 😁

@@TheRenegade... when I found someone selling a MBP 16GB/1TB for $10 more than the best I could find on the mini it was a no-brainer: better resale value w lots of freebies for 0.4 lbs: backlit keyboard w touch ID, trackpad, camera, retina display, speakers/mic, longlife battery, runs off USB-C PD (not AC), & still has active cooling. now the device can play "double duty" docked or travel (esp if i decide to leave the iPadPro home)

The iPad is fine with iPad OS. If you exclusively use it for movie watching, reading, extra screen. If you need a laptop for work, just stick with a Macbook. I am contented with this setup. But Apple is also at fault by putting a powerful CPU on that thing and get people imagine stuff like putting macOS.

I paid for the iPad Pro 13 inch M4 33.02 cm 2 TB maxed out with the Magic Keyboard. I have also the iPad Pro 2TB 2021. I am a power user. I will buy an IBM PC Compatible computer for my desktop computer and my iPad Pro 2TB for my mobile device. My iPhone 15 Max Pro and my other iPad Pro all work great together. Only reason to buy the PC is for games and programming but I can also just program from my iPad Pro. In fact I have put off buying the PC for now. And just use my iPad Pro 2TB M4. It is an awesome machine.

The state of the Game Porting Toolkit, emulation, and Linux on Apple Silicon makes for a very interesting storm brewing & I'm crazy enough to go into the eye of the storm! ⛈️ lol

The best video about the everyday use of the Apple Ecosystem… The moment you leave a desk the laptop is never used…i think “lap”top definition is now obsolete because of the “lap”pad Just put a Mac Mini on your desk and carry the 13” iPad with you all day. Can you tell me case you use on the 11” iPad with the Magic Keyboard? Also im trying to figure out which software you used for this. I didn’t notice when i watched the video the first time and now that i am thinking of doing the same im scrolling in your video to find it with no luck 😅 Thanks mate
