Hi, I'm Uyen Ninh but please just call me Uyen!
I moved from Vietnam to Germany 3 years ago for studying. I make silly videos about how Germany looks like through the eyes of a Vietnamese student - on my way to be your favourite Ausländer! :D

The history of the dong xuan centre is actually really inspiring. The west and east of berlin hired guest workers from all around the world, and in the eastern part of berlin that was mainly vietnamese workers. They didnt have any ingredients from back home though. So a vietnamese man started buying these slaughter halls for cheap and turned them one after another into these markets. He even started a specialised shipping firm that managed all the supplies for him xD.
@theta-my8837
@theta-my8837 10 ай бұрын
Hi, your mostly right, but the part with the slaughter halls are wrong. All halls are newly build, one after a other and continue. This area was former a industrial complex around to produce "electrical coal" (contact brushes) and other parts for electrical motors. After the reunion of east and west Germany, this area was "led open" as the company was going off business. The Dong Xuan Center complex is the 3-th or 4-th great trading center in Berlin for Asian products over the time - and the largest and actual best. 2 of the formal existent are closed and the last other existent is not far from the Dong Xuan Center, at the Marzahner Str. 17, 13053 Berlin. (I would not recommend a visit as the center is almost empty and dying...) The owner of the Dong Xuan Center (and his family) have build some other businesses around the center, like a hotel and the newly opened event center right at the entry of the area. The event center is build at the foundation of the formal "Kulturhaus Elektrokohle" (culture center for the workers at the business complex "electrical coal"). I'm almost shopping every week(end) with my wife there and each time amazed about the size and the count of shops you can buy from, and almost each time there are more shops. 😅🤤

@@theta-my8837 thanks for correcting me, i just assumed that they were slaughter halls cause Lichtenberg was kind of known at the time for them! I also go regularly (at least once a month), they just have the best viet-thai food in Berlin xD

@@Obsidianen The slaughter halls area are not fare from the Dong Xuan Center, roughly 3km. Have a look at this for further information: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zentralvieh-_und_Schlachthof If you like to have a view of the remaining ruins at the "Hammelauktionshalle" at the "Blankensteinpark" right beside the "Rinderauktionshalle", yet used by "Zweirad Stadler."

We have a lot of smaller Asian Shops here as well. Especially the Vietnamese culture is big in the former east of Berlin because of the DDR times when people came here to work.

Boba has become quite popular in the UK in the last 10 years (most towns and cities will have at least one boba shop and some cafés also sell it). If you visited, I'd be interested in your opinion on boba in the UK. We don't have much Vietnamese food, but you might find somewhere in London. The closest cuisine that is popular here is probably Thai and some multi-cuisine restaurants sell things like pho (but I doubt it's authentic). I think the biggest Asian cuisines in the UK are Chinese and Indian, because we had a lot of immigrants from places like Hong Kong, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India who then adapted their cuisines to the local tastes and ingredients. Japanese food is also becoming very popular here, but is still harder to find than say Thai.

There is a Vietnamese community in pretty much every Eastern European country (East Berlin was in the GDR), since the Soviet Union and Vietnam were brother states.

We visited a Vietnamese fast food takeout in Prague in 2017, was very surprised they have a Vietnamese community there. Food was good too. Wish we knew there was also a Vietnamese community in Berlin as we were there in 2019. Must go back ❤ again.

Why would you hate a town that you have not even visited? That is called prejudice. Not even an opinion, because to have an opinion, you would have to have experienced it. Berlin is a great places especially for people who like urban style without having the claustrophobic "big town" feeling.
