Interesting project. Will be really cool to see it run. I’d recommend getting some collets or end mill holders instead of using a drill chuck for milling since drill chucks aren’t designed for the sideways forces of milling. You can easily damage the chuck, or even have the chuck fall off the arbor. You’ll also likely see a better cut quality with this change from increased rigidity. Good luck finishing the engine!

Yay I'm glad you are attempting this project. Maybe for lubrication you could use a oil fogging nozzle for the cylinders. The biggest problem with radials is the oil leaking into the bottom cylinders and hydro locking, it usually destroys the rods.
@martynwatson49292 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. Radial engines are invariably dry sump. 'it usually destroys the rods' bullshit.
@ogaugeclockwork44072 жыл бұрын
Correct, even though they’re dry sump, oil can accumulate in the lower cylinders. Why you see them being turned over manually with magneto’s off before start up.

Excellent work, I made a radial engine a bit larger with 5 cylinders, similar designed *bobbin* style master rod. To balance the engine, I used the total of the rotating weights and just over half (0.508) of the reciprocating weights and worked well. Because of the geometer during rotation, you may find the top dead center positions are not equally spaced,, mine are several degrees different and I set ignition timing individually for each cylinder and also cam timing. Because of this anomaly, balancing is a compromise. To speed up the build I used a car exterior 12 volt fuel pump running on 24 volts to pump the engine oil and works very well. I used a cheap fuel pressure regulator to maintain 30 psi oil pressure to crankshaft and the cams and the spill off sprays into the crankcase to lube the pistons and rods. I pull a lever and lift the inlet valves (not the exhaust valves)to drain the 2 lower pots through a ball valve at lowest point of inlet manifolds (i have 5 carbs) . I turn the engine over by hand twice before starting to prevent hydraulic lock. Radials are an amazing, slightly different engine, feel free to message me, glad to help if I can.

this is my question too that how the rocker drive chain will run if there are 3 cylinders or 1 cylinder there must be pushrods mechanism by cam on the crank shaft and roller end follower attahed in crank case (tappet) also here in this video i saw the crank case must be thicker than present one crank shaft should be stronger to bear the torque load of 3 pistons or it will break the crankshaft ( the present condition in this video is failed, the Engine will not start ) do watch the videos of radial engines thanks

@Dave5843-d9m2 жыл бұрын
A two stroke radial is much easier. Four cylinders can all be carried on one wide crank pin with minimal offset between cylinders. Master con rod is not needed. Make the non-drive end of the crankshaft from a tube. This becomes the air intake. Mixture enters between the crank webs then gets carried out to the transfer ports. You an use ant suitable cylinders, pistons and con-rods. The cylinder inlet ports are not needed but are no problem as piston rings don't get down that far. There is no primary compression, so you will need a light duty blower to feed air at low revs. At higher revs, the exhaust will do all necessary pumping.
@siggyretburns75232 жыл бұрын
