@@Chopan8809 Computers have been using the x86 architecture for decades. It’s easy to run compatible code on modern hardware as long as it’s not too archaic. The problem with game consoles is that each console that’s not built on x86 or compatible instruction sets (PS2, maybe PS3, PSP and I think vita) would be like translating languages and it’s either difficult or very resource intensive. Oldest PS3s had PS2 hardware for instance. Nintendo has been using the same architecture between the GameCube, Wii and Wii U which is why it just works.

Also, he picked the easiest target for going against backwards compatibility. Sure, maybe there's no real reason to play Gran Turismo from PS1 or PS2 but that series has always been focused on the graphics over gameplay. What if I wanted to play Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman, Tekken 3, Silent Hill or Klonoa Beach Volleyball from the PS1? Or Way of the Samurai 2, Twisted Metal: Black, Rayman 3 or Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks from PS2? Those games don't have sequels that feel or play the exact same on the current console so how am I supposed to get the same or even similar experience without emulation or a PS2?

The playstation 1 classic uses a low end arm chip and opensource emulator(not sure how they pulled that off). they can't do the same with ps2 for 2 reasons: 1.the amount of power needed to emulate ps2 is highter, you'd need a good arm chip that is included in top of the line android phones from the last 3-4 years wich will bring big costs. so would using and APU from AMD let's say 2. they would have to develop an emulator inhouse because i'm pretty sure they can't use the opensource emulator PCSX2 and sell it as their own creation. high costs = nobody will buy it. there's no business interest for sony.

@Gabriel Rocha Certain things are remapped different. Like as an example pulling a weapon without firing is a left stick click. The only weird feeling remapping I recall was having the coolant spray use the right stick.

I gotta admit, I'm surprised you went out and used a PS4 Pro over a standard or slim model, I'm still scared to mod mine since it's shared in my household. Still, it's a damn shame that BC wasn't properly supported. Even in it's current state, games like Killer7, Viewtiful Joe, and Silent Hill 3 looked fucking gorgeous and don't seem to suffer from many notable visual flaws that you usually get from standard emulation (or in SH3's case, missing effects from botched ports), and I doubt it would've costed Sony much money to collaborate with these companies like what Microsoft has done on their side with the Xbox BC.

Interesting stuff! I've been playing PS2 games on my custom firmware PS3, even though they only upscale to 720p, the compatibility currently seems better and I got my old memory card saves onto the console. That extra resolution and filtering seems very nice though, might have to look into this if my PS3 dies/PS4s become cheaper and you can do it a higher firmware one day.

Same here, I have the original 60 GB PS3 they launched in the USA. Sadly, it eventually stopped working (freezes up a few seconds after start up) about 6 years after I got it. I got the slim after and still is working. I still do have my original 60GB launch PS3, I'm glad I held on to it since it is the backward compatible. I believe it honestly can be fixed if properly looked at, if it just needs to be cleaned, or if a part(s) needs to be replaced. I purchased a PS5 last November 2022 (skipped the PS4 generation) when I got it at regular price. Surprisingly, I waited almost half a year (till summer time) until opening it. And I've only turned it on 1 time and then disconnected it. I'm still playing my slim PS3, trying to get Platinum on DS2 before finally switching to the PS5. I will definitely always keep my original 60GB launch system and eventually try to get it running. With the first launched backward compatible PS3 and a PS5, you are able to play all 5 generations of PlayStation just with those 2 systems. And you can always upgrade the memory.

you sir deserve the Title "Master Librarian of the Digital Archive" epic work sir, ive felt quite disenchanted with the lack of backward compatibility of the ps4, it cant even read cd discs for music or ps1 games, and those few ps2 titles on the store were that well hidden i didnt know they existed until your video... they should have had their own section at the front of the store... we should have been able to run our own ps2 discs on the console off the bat maybe with added trophy support. Sony just doesnt seem to care. Im glad theres people out there like you that do. Damn i miss timesplitters 1 and 2 multiplayer aaand Tekken Tag bowling.... so many games... Heres the thing tho, sony blatantly doesnt care about our back catalogue of games, even ps5 supports only some ps4 titles, and theres that whole in built death with a dead battery in ps3 ps4 and ps5. Microsoft has great backward compatibility of its old games on its new xbox, i could jump ship and buy a bunch of old games from the thrift store like timesplitters 2 and 3 aswell as xbox only titles ive missed out on and continue to support xbox with the purchase of new games aswell as their console, i can also support them via paying for developers mode which allows you to run custom programs including emulators like retro arch to run my ps1 and ps2 back catalogue that Sony doesnt care about 😂 crazy, microsoft has better customer care than sony by allowing and supporting personal use of their product, and if i want to play my old games on it for a blast of nostalgia or for a long time thats ok. thankyou Microsoft for caring about us older gamers 🍻 ive supported Sony since the 90s, but i dont recognise this new beast wearing an old friends face, the whole situation makes me feel deflated and betrayed. Im waiting for the next revision of these super consoles before i make up my mind but i honestly dont see sony removing its inbuilt death on battery failiure or add legacy game support to ps1 ps2 or psp and vita titles, ps3 like you say was and is an awkward one with its complex cell cpu but im sure some of the more popular titles could be refurbed and put out at a modest price too, not that i think they will. people watch old films and buy hd rereleases of old films because of nostalgia or because they were done well and still stand up today, theres multiple ways to watch old films be it streaming, dvds or blue rays. games need a decent and compatible machine to run them. is Sonys machine good enough to run a potentially awesome back catalogue? the ps1 and ps2 were legendary with the epic volume and variety of games so was the psp. so so very sad Sony has no regard for its foundations and history, a history well worth celebrating, a history to be proud of not buried and forgotten.

Very cool project, great that there is a way to replicate the PS2 experience! Had no idea forcing the games into widescreen was possible. Having true widescreen without scaling the character models is impressive. Seems like it comes at the expense of stretching menus though. Guess it’s up to personal preferences when choosing between the large play area and circles not being ellipses

certain widescreen patches have menu fixes in them. just read the patch notes when you drop the .pnach file. the patches will sometimes remove other issues like blurring

Sounds amazing, with fixes for menus and interface it’s a new way to play them! I like backwards compatibility. I regularly use my 3DS as a DS, and my Wii as a Gamecube. Microsoft’s solution for OG Xbox on the 360 was less impressive, just glad I can finally play Panzer Dragoon Orta on it.

OK but where did you get that incredible PS4 theme replicating the PS2's system menu?! I've had a tough time finding any themes I actually like for my PS4, and that would be a fabulous choice. Overall a great overview of the current state of PS2 emulation on the PS4 -- simple, concise, to the point, and with plenty of resources for further info. I've known about being able to wrap PS2 ISOs into FPKGs for a while, but hadn't gotten around to putting together any myself yet... this video might be the motivation I need!

This is great, and it's entertainingly presented, but I have a question. Certain PS2 games, such as MGS2 and 3, used the pressure sensitive (analog) face buttons of the PS2, where lightly pressing and fully pressing them were distinct actions. As far as I know, the DS4 does not have this capability. How can one handle this obstacle with this particular modded PS4?

From my limited knowledge: mgs 2 & 3 are not currently running yet. I imagine there are modifications you could hypothetically make to the iso to toggle the pressure sensitivity, much like the Vita ports did. Stay tuned

Just secured a launch model backwards compatible PS3 to do this. I know, I know, it's not emulation, it's got PS2 chips. But I'm wondering if the PS4 emulation would be better (even if not as compatible?) for getting higher resolutions. That being said, I can always run PCSX2 on my PC is I want to pixel crunch a game.

amazing video , i've been aware of hacks and even used them up to 7.55 fw (which is unstable af compared to 5.05 and 6.72) but since PS4's PS2 emulator crashed some of my games i actually bought an actual PS2 , used hacks on it to get higher compatibility , so that's my PS2 Classic that can even go HD with component cables but i still used CRT because i love that more

The compatibility list actually is the main reason I did not went this way. Went for PC with pcsx2. Still not optimal, but got for the time more compatibility for cheaper.

I been playing ps2 games lately because i never had the games or money to play any other game that is not Pro evolution soccer at the time and I been loving it. Even at this time and age , I found out that the ps2 hay a galery of games that Have an artistic vision and Heart at its own. I hate the argument that Old game= Innecesary , Every good game must be judge like a Piece of art with intencions and messege (if it has one) and don't be to analytical about the age of the game inself

Games are held to this "age" standard more so than other creative mediums. Films, music, art. Just never made sense to me.

Hmh, I wonder how this would work on Matrix: Path Of Neo. I tried to emulate it on my PC but it seems to crash when it comes to loading the levels.
