@@ArrowGent that won't work unless you have access to Sony's private key to properly sign the license file. Iirc, their private key leaked online a few years ago though, so it is technically possible to do. But rather than jump through a bunch of hoops to use an illegally acquired key to restore your games, you may as well just soft mod your console and remove the check altogether, since that's at least in a legally gray area.

@@nmragnarok Nope, that would not work. The reason is simple. You wouldn't know that the battery is dead until it's too late. And if you replaced the battery, its the same problem as old pokemon on the GB have: That power was lost, and thus the ram couldn't be maintained, and was wiped. So a problem is to replace the battery before both A) the battery inside the system dies, & B) without cutting power to the ram in the first place. This COULD be done by putting 2 batteries in parallel, but you can't do that without opening your system.... which is a MASSIVE pain in the ass. In otherwords: There's only 3 options right now, only 1 of which is viable. 1) installing CFW on your ps3 (Viable) 2) Sony releases an update that fixes this problem (incredibly unlikely) 3) Sony keeps a server up for simply checking the time (also unlikely)

they do tell you. most people just don't like to read. you "buy" a license to play the game. practically you still buy it, renting would mean you'd be given a time limit on your usage. that is in practice not the case. once you buy it you do have indefinite access to the game. now there is a big UNLESS, obviously. if for what ever reason sony, the publisher or anyone else decide to pull a game (most famous example being p.t.) and you deleted the software you guaranteed lost access to it. the store getting closed can be another factor, although there it isn't always a guaranteed lost access and sometimes just the lost ability to buy games, not redownload already purchased games. disc don't have an indefinite lifetime either, just one longer than a cmos or your average digital store. i know your statement was probably meant as a joke to some degree, i just like to take stuff deadass.

Why can I still play everything that doesn't require online connection on my old consoles? But for as say gta v on ps3 don't work anymore. I am guessing they took servers down or something. Yes cd will decay, nothing lasts forever. But it should depend on how you treat your games and consoles and not for how long the game devs feel like it. You wouldn't trust your car company if they disabled your car every 5th year, forcing you to buy a new car, now would you? But if you crashed your car, you can only blame yourself. Lasse Hårdrockspulver every piece of digital media is distributed as a license. games as an example always get sold as keys. those allow you access to that particular game. even for most programs (adobe, windows etc.) you only get a license. yet they still say buy. hell, in adobes case i think it even is a time limited license making it far more "renting" than games. games have a hypothetical time limit digitally. but we can't ensure that, nor can sony in some case. but in its core you still buy the product, even if it is just a license. you don't have to like that, nobody has to. but that is how it is, your only way to go around that is buying physically. but even physical purchases are nothing more than purchasing an access key to use that game (that's why despite modern games installing on hdd/ssd you still need to keep the disc inserted to access it) the only difference being that a discs shelf life is more in your hands than a digital game that also gets ganged on by drm, a cmos and a potential loss of online access. the only potential way around that would be sony removing the drm on ps3/vita or keeping some basic level of psn access to those devices, but they are a business and i don't think they'd genuinely care enough to do that. "how would that benefit my business?", that's all they care about. and if they don't see a genuine gain in their decision they'll probably not do it. hence why we haven't seen proper backwards compatibility realized and hence why we have that drm issue in the first place.

Listen, I am old and oldschool. Used to be a hardcore gamer but with age comes responsibilities so now I play less. And I am questioning the whole game industry more and more. It has become a greedy, propaganda machine. Creativity shouldn't be limited because of politics or moneyhungry suits. So you think it would be too much to ask of a multi-billion dollar company to like, keep one or two servers up for that old game that only their own most loyal players still use? I can understand for in the instances of OS as an example, because of security issues that comes over time. But for games... No. You are also limited by the poor HD space on your console, so you can only have so many games installed. And yes I praise the physichal versions that don't require online features. All of my old Psx games still work, pc games and programs that are like 20 years old, and work just as fine as their newer versions. I still use photoshop 5.0. I have old sega 16 bit and even the old nes original that still work. Because I take care of my things. That is my whole point. That is what I call buying something. You see, sticking feathers up your butt, doesn't make you a chicken. You have to call bs when you see it. Or you will always be a poor sap that praise the very ones that exploits you, kid. Unless you buy digital with DRM or whatever (support the developers, as always), and then go get the cracked versions, so you have the games actually forever XD. You can burn them on a DVD, Blu-ray, or keep them on backup disks, local or in some cloud server (I prefer local). *_Or you go to GOG and others,_* which when you buy, you can download the offline installers right after since there's no DRM in the games sold in those platforms as a start (which is from where I'm buying every time I can, starting from 2 months ago).

If you just go and download cracked versions, that's not cool. You're not thanking the developers for the work they've done. After 5 or 6 years, a week ago I finally thanked Bethesda for Fallout 3, for example (from GOG - so now I officially own the offline installer of the game). It's a cool gesture. You made an awesome game or program. You see people getting it without paying. You wouldn't be that happy about it. Not even a "thank you" you got from those. Not that cool. So you buy to support them and then download cracked to keep (xD) - or from GOG and others, you don't need the cracked versions. Others that are not on those platforms, buy+cracked XD.

Now is the best time to jailbreak a ps3 before the new update, I would do some research on how to install HEN, you can play any ps2/ps1 game and install something called PKGI which is a free game store with any ps3 title you want. It takes 15 mins to set up and really gets you hooked

For someone like me this news all around is devastating. I've spent thousands on the PS store and have over 1,684 items on my PS3/PS Vita on the digital side, and well over 300 or more physical PS3 and Vita titles. The PS3 won't even support an HDD large enough to for me to back up everything up. The news regarding PS4 and the cmos battery is concerning too as I have over 500 physical games and almost a thousand digital titles. And I know, I'm 42, I get nothing lasts forever and I don't even have the time to play my vast library of well over 5,000 games across 10 or more platforms before I die. But I have a 3 year old daughter and at very least was hoping to pass these digital and physical LIBRARIES on to her, and these things really limit that. It's sad to think that our digital libraries can be gone in an instant and that some day even our physical libraries won't work.

There's an important thing to consider: Many people (like myself) bought digital copies of certain games *because of how rare and/or expensive* their original physical releases are. Games like "The Misadventures of Tron Bonne", "Revelations: Persona", or "Klonoa: Door to Phantomile", are ridiculously expensive to buy a used copy of, because they are either in high demand, rare, or some combination of both.

I've been playing PS1, and PS2 games for years on my PC, and i'll just jailbreak my PS3, and can play all the games with no strings attached. I think the reason why Sony is dropping it, because the Cell processor is so hard to emulate. The X360 at the other hand is very easy to emulate. So that's why Microsoft heavily invested into BC games. And now they're even adding 60 fps support. Sony gave us a reason to pirate games, and i don't even feel bad about it too, if they cannot preserve legacy titles. Because Hardware Wise the PS5 could handle it.

Also, I like soft modding systems with broken drives since there's really no risk at that point. That's what we did with our Wii that was just collecting dust. Edit: Steam has a End of Life Plan as of 2009, that If their service stop for some reason they will remove all drm on your purchased games and let you download and backup every game in your library for 1 year, which is enough to buy the Hard Drives necessary as download speeds is not a problem with their servers.

Just recently I bought Ratchet & Clank: Into The Nexus off the PS3 Store (before it closes), and now I'm starting to regret it... Now I'm starting to worry about the PS5 going through the exact same thing. Obviously that won't be happening with PS5 anytime soon because of how new the console is, but every console has a lifespan, and once PS5's is up, or when Sony decides to pull the plug on it as well (which won't be for a while, but still), I'm afraid all of the digital games (and digital DLC added to my physical games' software) I bought off the PS Store will no longer be accessible on my PS5! I haven't bought like a huge ton of digital games on PS5, but quite a few, most of which were on sale/discounted on the PS Store. Thankfully most of my digital PS5 games I'm not terribly worried about losing, and I can live without in this case. But there are a couple games that I feel like I can't afford to lose and would much rather keep forever and have access to play at anytime, one of which being Crash Bandicoot 4! Now this might just be my panicked state talking, but from now on, whenever a new game comes out for the PS5, I think it might be safer to get it physically. Like I've been debating on pre-ordering the new game Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and whether if I should pre-order it physically or digitally, but now I'm starting to lean more towards physical. Do you think that's the safest bet?

You don’t own digital games, you are borrowing them from Sony. There’s really no other way to look at it as this has not been tested for near 30 years or more like the NES-PS1 generations. You should always buy physical if you care about actually owning your games and preservation. Biggest worry regardless will be games that are broken without day 1 patches since devs dgaf anymore. Ive purchased countless digital games from Sony when on sale due to cross compatibility on psp/vita and digital exclusives. But I know damn well it’s a matter of time before servers go down for ps3. Microsoft has been way more consumer friendly which sucks as a JRPG fan since they all go to Sony.

It may squish extra few years of lifetime from those PS3s, but no hardware could last forever, and emulating a PS3 has a lot of issues and I'm not sure they will be completely fixed ever (with previous consoles it was much easier to reverse engineer a lot of the hardware/firmware, but with PS3 things got very complicated).

how long does the timer for these games last? I see the timer on your titles dates to 2018. Because I have had most of my digital gams for roughly 5-6 years. and it hasn't been connected the internet in five years. And I'm still playing them like nothing happened.

The 2 currencies used in Lebanon are the US Dollar (USD) and Lebanese Pound (LBP). Official rate is pegged at $1.00 USD = 1,507.5 LBP, so anything you buy online can be used with this rate. So a $60.00 USD PS4 game is around 90,450 LBP *digitally*. At one point in time this year 2021, the black market rate for LBP was $1.00 USD = 15,000 LBP! This is the first I've heard of this issue and really makes me worried on the future even more. I even go out of my way for majority of my purchases to be physical, but in the case of the PS4 with that not even mattering, not excited for it to happen in a decade (if that). I'm also on the same exact boat as you are, I try to keep my devices as stock as possible but when it's reached LTS phase or end of life and you can't even use a device properly through legit means, seems custom firmware is the only real option at that point. What sucks is how it's the only real option for LEGIT copies of games. This is crazy stuff.

for the ps3 era and older yeah go physical but for the ps4 era and up its a no go both physical and digital because most games even if they are on disc need to download almost the whole game before you can play so if they close psn for ps4 or in the future for ps5 its bye bye to all version you get

@@gameNLHD that’s a misconception, at least from what I know for Nintendo. There’s only some games that heavily require online usage or download. There’s been videos and post that have talked about this better than I am, like clearly and logically. I’m sorry I couldn’t do it justice, but yeah. I’m sorry but no matter what can go wrong with physical, it’s always better than digital and it’s drawbacks. I have no interest leasing/renting games, I wanna buy them.

So question: If Sony discontinued online services to the ps3 and you have a good cmos battery will you have acess to digital games? If so, then could you just replace your cmos battery every 10 years and be okay? I don't support what Sony is doing but I do have lots of digital ps3 games and would like to preserve them as best as I can legally.

The moment you remove the CMOS, your PS3 loses the time. Even if you replace it you will need to connect to PSN to reset the time and unlock your games. Legally, your hands are tied until Sony addresses this problem.

Loved the video! I share a lot of this "i only pirate when i have no other choice" myself, specially where i live, Brasil, where old games can get REALLY pricey ( trying to get a Jet set radio copy for myself but they go for 120 USD+ ( 600 reais or even more), that being one of the few ones i am hunting in here, some i cant even find anymore (El shaddai, which i am glad it is getting a PC port)) and there is currently sony is having some sort of curation of WHICH PS4 GAMES WOULD GET A PHYSICAL COPY HERE, games like crash team racing, crash 4 or 13 sentinels have near double the price of a normal game would be sold here because we have to import your copies from overseas (psn does not help as you are basically paying 60+ dollars per game when platforms like steam and their own physical games are waaaaaaay more budget friendly for us) and now hearing for the second and third time about this cmos thingy does not only make me want to pirate my ps3, but the ps4 aswell Hope your concerns gets popular enough to change the game preservation scene for the better! We have to fight against this with the tools we have!
