Great doc about Men at Work...more to the point, it's about Colin Hay called Waiting For My Real Life To Begin. Covers a lot of this. It's really wonderful and sad and wonderful and sad...and then again. The defining moment for the band was a Rolling Stone shoot where the whole band was being photographed, but the cover was cropped down to just Colin and the sax player. It's how the band is perceived, no matter how it really works.

My band has been together for almost 20 years - every Thursday we get together and play (and yes, we kept our day jobs!). We're in it for the art, and the fun - not the money, which is probably why we still carve out one night a week to make the magic happen - again. We have our ups and downs, but always say 'Hey - we've been together longer than Led Zepplin!" - (we're better than them in that regard - ha ha)

Justin might have had a chance to meet them at the Taylor Hawkins tributes, but the band I admire the most is Rush. Three equal parts in a band greater than the sum of its parts that stayed together for 41 years because they were friends who liked and respected each other. I can only dream of such friendships .

Blur maintained an equal four-way songwriting split. Also, I watched a documentary about Genesis and those guys all remained amicable in business and personal lives. U2 is another example of a band of brothers who never fell out with each other. Even the Beatles did pretty well considering the insanity of their life experiences and the chaotic business arrangements and machinations which went on; they only ever sort-of fell out with each other. Hold on, we’re talking about bands that didn’t split up. Okay, ignore some of my examples above.

Peter and Ace were a liability. Drugged up to the eyeballs in the 70’s and an embarrassment. Paul and Gene found replacements and they were happy with how they fell into line and how well they played. The reunion tour showed that Peter just couldn’t play well anymore and Ace was still a liability. As Paul puts it - a band is like a 4 way marriage. 2 way marriages struggle as it is.

Thanks! Always great content. As a touring musician, I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the "future of music" being Web3 and the metaverse with concerts going virtual rather than in person. Would less touring bring a band closer together since you don't need to spend long hours on the road together getting bored or angry with each other or push bands apart since the bonding experiences aren't there? I'm 31 years old and I live in Chippenham, UK and I have released one full length album as well as a 6 track EP since 2018. I was deeply passionate about writing and playing guitar having played guitar and performed live since I was 17. However, in the last couple of years it's incredibly rare that I would play the guitar and find it harder and harder to write new things and rediscover my love for writing and playing my instrument. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety at the end of last year which made a lot of sense to me; following months of unease and regular panic attacks and a general sense of ennui seeping in, but how do (to use a darkness reference) not get stuck in a rut in the creative process?
