Well, mums recipes are always the best! I would certainly agree that your mum has very good taste. My mum used to make something very similar before she sadly passed away following a long battle with cancer last year. Paragraph

I first tried Chicken-a-la King when in H.M.Forces and would always grab as much as I could! Ours was served with sweetcorn and pea rice. Brings back memories! Sometimes we had Kippers and Custard or Cheese and Jam sarnies....my kids and Grandkids never believe me, but it's true! Stay safe lovely lady.

I made this and it was lovely. Instead of dry sherry I used cider vinegar, and it gave it a nice depth.

Made this dish just after I was married ,purchased a Sunbeam Frypan and included a healthy recipe book, this was one of my family favourites over the years from 1966 to 2021, 55 yrs and when family members come home still respect this dish called we called “Chicken Merrylands”

For 50 plus years and two generations, my family has always made Turkey Ala King served over rice following Thanksgiving or Christmas. Its a nice way to use some leftover turkey.

Haven't heard about this recipe since I was a teenager back in the 70s when - I think - Vesta used to produce them. Nice straightforward video recipes - thanks. Also I like the fact there's no drawn-out preamble to your videos, unlike so many on KZbin.

For those who don't use alcohol, add a tablespoon of mustard and a couple of drops of vinegar :)

@@MAhmed-zs2vp Presumably the muslims who handle alcohol when selling to customers in their shops, etc., or working in supermarkets, are exempt. I lived in a predominantly muslim African country, and many males consumed alcohol. During ramadan they would drink it in the toilets. Hilarious hypocrisy.

Her recipes are delicious....not sure there is such thing as a certain country cuisine these days....she’s cooking recipes from a all countries...now if she cooked a Roast Dinner.....that’s English Cuisine.....

This is not English cooking. This is an American take on a French recipe leaving out the chopped peppers and other ingredients. This is for people who can´t cook - like most Americans.

I was taught that one should fry mushroom on a dry frying pan to get rid of the water inside, and then add butter (or oil) to get them nice and brown. Thanks for the recipe, will try it for sure...

When I was a kid, Turkey à la King was a staple in our house the week after Thanksgiving. My mom didn’t use sherry but rather added pimentos. It added color and a nice kick to an otherwise fairly bland dish. I have watched a goodly number of your videos in the past few weeks and really appreciate the clarity of your instructions, the professional-quality photography (you know, food porn) and your genuinely charming personality. Well done, you!

Just made for our dinner tonight. Used scallions instead of "large onion", Used cooking Sherry instead of "dry Sherry". When I make it again, (because this was delicious!) I will be using the recommended ingredients above. Thank you for sharing your family "go-to" meal.

Cream sherry has more flavor than dry (amontillado). Grind in some black pepper, too.

This is almost exactly how my mom makes hers.. a lot of the recipes I see have more vegetables and stuff added to it but I adore how simple her recipe is. She also adds a can of pimento which is my favorite part. I woke up with a hankering for this and wanted to see how others make it. Your mom's looks great!

I disagree. If you add curry powder, you will drown the thyme. As an Indian, I love Continental flavours, as much as I love Indian, and I know better than to mix the two. This was meant to be Continental. Keep it that way.

Oh no Nina. This is a really old dish. I guess it was given that name to make a dish made with leftovers sound fancy. I would see it more after Thanksgiving and Christmas as Turkey a la King. Another was to use leftover turkey. Enjoy!!

Use cold stock, then it'll never become lumpy. Just ask Chef John. 😉 Btw I have tested it, time and again. No problems at all. 🙂

I've been cooking this almost the exact recipe for years, but never knew it had a name. I cooked the chicken bits like I was making General Tso's, in flour and corn starch.

I just made this for my family. I added peas but other than that I made it exactly the way you said and everyone loved it! The mushrooms with the creamy sauce & rice was my favorite part! The sauce is rich and delicious... needed very little salt to bring out the amazing flavor! Definitely making this again! Thank You Nikki ☺️💖✨💖😋

I made this today, or a version of it. Not a big fan of mushrooms, so didn't put that in and I don't drink alcohol (its great in food though), so don't have that at home. I used cream instead of milk and added cayenne spice. So good! Will definitely make this again!

Just discovered your channel/blog through searching on KZbin for recipes, and loving it - love that you use straightforward ingredients, with really clear instructions. Video quality is amazing. Have plans to try lots of your dishes. Many of which are staples I have been making for years but didn’t follow recipes and therefore didn’t get consistent results. Yesterday I followed your cottage pie recipe and today your tomato soup-both successful and will use again! Curry will be next I think. Keep up the good work 😀

Wide egg noodles - sounds good. Creamy dishes like this call for a little sharpness. I would add red pepper flakes or, at the very least, a generous grind of black pepper.

We used to eat it with rice or puff pastry. It is called ragout in The Netherlands and you can also make it with stewing beef, just mushrooms, salmon or trout. Whatever you fancy and is (pre)cooked. I love it.

I make something like this with left over roast chicken, but I use leeks instead of onions, and make a roux and add stock and a splash of milk. My Mum used to make something similar she called 'chicken in white sauce', and I've just modified it.

@@bridlong7763 My mum added chopped pimentos, peas and garlic to the sauce. Made it colorful. We always had it over noodles or toast, never rice. It’s the sherry that makes it so delicious so don’t skip that.

This is my first visit to your channel and I will back for more later on today. I love the precise measurements and explanations. eg I’m in the UK and was never sure how much ‘cup’ is. But I know now!

Instead of rice or pasta, I serve this over toast or crumbled biscuits. I also sometimes add cooked diced carrots and peas along with the chicken.

You can save yourself a bit of time by using condensed mushroom soup after frying mushroom and onion and use half tin of milk tastes really good and creamy ...every bit as good .
