That's the thing about fanfiction: it doesn't have to be canon. And blank characters like James can be very fun to play with, especially after the whole jkr debacle and people realizing Harry Potter is kinda problematic, reimagining the characters and their adventures has been the way a lot of people have found to keep interacting with the fandom without all of the bullshit that's tied to it.
