Homage watches are legally acceptable unless of course you get a lawsuit filed against you for using somebody elses's design. Replicas (no matter how good or bad they are) are replicas, they have the whole trademark reproduction as well.

I only buy homage watches and could stare at them for hours. I'm alone in my enthusiasm, so no in-person watch people to impress. I love to do my own refinements, mix and match parts, get into the 'watch-making' aspect. Buying homages with potential isn't easy and I've learned to really appreciate details. Seems like cheap homages done well are a kind of cheat and something that shouldn't exist, but they hold my interest a long time. Through my cheap hobby, I learned I'm an Omega guy. Also learned I love Tudor a lot and have different iterations of BlackBay homages.

There are homage watches that perform on par with the original design houses. While I acknowledge that watches like , Rolex, are amazing , I still believe they don't cost all that money they sell for. Soon enough the Chinese will give them a hard bone to chew as they are producing some great watches ,like Phoibos ,without you need to be going broke.

I like the Pagani Design homage chronographs with Seiko VK63 movements as they keep good time, areade of good materials and have good level of finishing for the $75 to $150 price range. I could never afford an Omega or Rolex chronograph and the Pagani models have subtle differences such as added date windows or differing dial colors. Good video and agree about not buying fakes.

Excellent video. First, especially in the area of intellectual property, courts often don't have a clue (I'm an attorney). The AP case you mention could just as easily been decided against AP. And it's worth mentioning that in a given industry (i.e., watches, cars, cameras), the greatest innovations regularly come from the companies who not only 'imitate', but improve a product in the process. In a competitive free market, that's actually what's supposed to occur. When Honda (Acura) and Toyota (Infiniti) entered the luxury sedan market, the companies they were 'imitating' (i.e. Mercedes, BMW) were forced back to the drawing board to create an even better product. Ideally, the innovations and increased choice creates a win/win scenario for us as consumers.

I can't believe that case was decided in AP's favor. I'm no attorney and didn't read any details about it, but based on the pictures, the watches look completely different other than the octagonal shape of the bezel and the eight (stylistically different) screws.

Toyota (Lexus)... but I understand your point. I own 4 watches, for a combined retailed price just under $1K, not much but I am thrilled with each one of them. I found out later that 2 of the 4 are homage watches (Jack Mason and Pascal brands). And both are beautiful and meet my needs. I cannot imagine the price I'd have to pay for the original, they would come out to more than $30K. I don't have any interest in acquiring these watches at that point.

About replica watches I live in Brazil, and criminality in São Paulo became a big thing, I don't feel safe wearing my original Calibre 16 around, so I thought on having a replica of it to use and only use the original in special occasions, just on safe purpose, it's just something that came to mind but I don't know, it's because I love the look of the calibre 16

There is no WAY I could afford a Rolex Submariner, and I hate fake watches, that is obviously something we should all be against. I bought an Invicta Pro Diver, which is a VERY similar style-wise to the Submariner, but it has a quality movement by Seiko, and it says Invicta EVERYWHERE. I am brand new to watches, pulled in surprisingly enough by smartwatches. I do not have a lot of money, and I expect my "collection" to have quite a few Seiko 5's in it, but it is nice to be able to get a watch that looks great, it's not a fake, but certainly has that style to it.

Agree with you, I have two Invicta Pro Diver watches and for the price with a good Seiko movement in them are really good value for money. Having Invicta stamped on the watch gives it its own identity so doesn't bother me one bit. You can buy two Invicta's for the price of one Seiko 5 and I have found the Invicta is a better watch.

Chris - Go for the Tisot Visodate (Black Dial), has a Swiss Movement, it's an all around classy watch. Jomashop.com has had them for under $400, they also have the Seiko SXK 007 which is much nicer than the Seiko 5 and is a must for a collector. Good Luck

@@louisfalise2839 I am brand new to all of this. I do not own any Seiko 5's right now. There are a couple that I want. The Seiko 5 Sports Silver Watch SRP481K1, and the SNK803. I take my time, the real reason I started looking at "real" watches is that I was looking at my smartwatch, realizing it cost over $200 and would be no good in a few years and I could probably spend that money wiser by getting a watch that would not become obsolete. As for selling a cheap collection to buy a dream watch. I think what I want to do, is have a few different style watches that are good, but not expensive, then maybe save up for one special watch, no idea what that would be.

Another awesome video. I have to say that I was given a replica watch and I took it to a jeweler to size and he was in awe of how good it was. He told me that it was very convincing. I said, thanks & wore it for a while then it died... no big deal. I have several good homage watches that are from reputable brands and they are great pieces. I don't foresee me being in the market for a $25K presidential but my Croton works just as good. I think that people need to remember that each person has their own reason for owning a watch, either real, replica or homage & being judgmental is so 2018... LOL. Keep up the good work man!

I have a friend that was passed down a Rolex Sub from his grandfather. However, he didn't like to wear it out during college for fear of losing it. So he got the Invicta watch that looked similar but obviously wouldn't hurt as much as losing as Rolex. These Replicas are also great for starting a collection, as I picked up a Seiko 5 for my brother to get his collection started. He is now becoming much more interested in watches and hopefully will buy his own nice watch soon!

I always loved the look of the original Rolex Daytona and the thing that's always fascinated me about the "homage" debate is that the design and layout of the Daytona was based strongly on the original Omega Speedster. Does this then make the original Daytona a Speedster homage watch?

Happy New Years Teddy. Was recently out of the country and encountered many replicas openly in the market place. The most convincing was the basic Explorer. Personally opposed to replicas, but the phenomena has not occurred in a vacuum and some blame falls on the hype and greed of the of the top tier. Who's shedding tiers for their bottom lines, lol. Great vid Teddy! I agree with you I think. I do not mind homage watches really, especially if the lower price variant made at least some attempt to be unique. Is my Spinnaker Hull watch a homage to a Panerai? Absolutely. But it’s also different enough to be its own. I also do not mind homage watches because I don’t think they’re stealing customers from the higher tier brands. Would I rather have a Panerai? Again, absolutely. But I didn’t buy the Spinnaker for a 1-for-1 replacement - I bought it because I love the style of Panerai watches but I’m never going to buy one unless my position changed radically, or for a number of years. So great points! But also yeah, replicas can GTFO.

I agree that homage watches are great for giving people without mountains of money access to the great designs high end brands provide. I generally prefer a lot of more original designs, but homages are generally not bad unless you get companies like Hublot making Royal Oak like watches. I don’t mess with fake watches though. It’s just not right to try to pass off a fake when I’d rather show up with a really nice original design that isn’t pretending to be something it isn’t.

Great video. I have an idea for a video. After my father passed away and my mother gave me his Seiko 17 jewels automatic. This Swatch holds sentimental value to me, I remember as a kid my mother giving it to him for Christmas and father wore that watch every day of for the next 30 years or so. But the now the watch is in bad shape. I love this watch and would be honored to wear it in memory of my father. So, my idea for a video it's a simple question how should one go about to repair and or restore old watches?

For my inexperienced eye almost every diver with bezel that looks like Rolex Submariner looks like a homage watch. Even Orient Ray III, which I'm planning to get my hands on, as soon as it hits the stores in my country. And there's only handful of variations of dress watches you can make, so accidents are inevitable. So I don't have problem with those, unless it's exact replica with different logo. In China manufacturing price for any automatic replica is under 100 USD. so if you pay 500 for Rolex you get ripped off and have a trash on your wrist. For real deal you get ripped off, but you can wear it with pride. btw, manufacturing price for quartz fashion watch is under 2 USD.

I agree with your comments. I personally own many Homage watches from a brand that over values their watches and then sells them way more cheaply because I love the look of the Submariner, but cannot afford one. Honestly I have no problem with homage watches. Replica and fake watches are the same category to me personally. But homage watches if built right aren't a problem. Most people ( i.e the general working public) can not buy a Rolex, or don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a watch. For most people five hundred dollars is a lot for a watch. Us hobbyist are a different breed where we see that 7 k for a Rolex as justifiable.

Hi Teddy. Love your videos. I got the call from my AD in November and purchased the two toned Bluesy Sub. I’ve always loved this watch. I also bought the Invicta copy and here’s why. I’ve read that in some restaurants and other places, there are spotters. So, I wear my Rolex in the restaurant and before I leave, I go to the bathroom and switch to my Invicta. If anyone demands the watch on my wrist I will happily give them the copy and make the spotter look like a jerk.

I don't quite understand everyone's hate towards homage watches (fake and replicas are horrible though), at the end of the day, it is not the same audience who is looking at these watches. someone isn't on the fence between a Rolex submariner or an Invicta pro diver. Rolex loses no money from having the Invicta pro diver exist. it only benefits the consumers who maybe can't drop thousands on a Rolex but want a similar style. As long as it is two different price points (i.e isn't taking money from the original manufacturer) and is clearly marketed as something else (i.e says 'Invicta pro diver' not 'Rolex submariner') who cares (ideally it adds its own flair too).

Some people that make the fake replicas market them as the original and since people don't really know they will drop the thousands for that Rolex without knowing it's a replica. That takes away from Rolex because they didn't get paid for their intellectual property. As far as buying a cheap replica that you know is a replica, it is mostly unethical. It is first off illegal, and given that cheap replicas don't have great quality it could lead to a type of negative PR if someone sees this crappy watch with the Rolex branding.

Mvteyv I have zero hate for fake or homage. As long as the seller is honest about the watch being fake, by all means it’s fair game. Some people just can’t afford those over priced Rolex’s. I love Rolex but it’s marketing! They make great watches, but there’s so many other brands that are better in built and bang for buck.

Almost all watches are in some form or another inspired by the same few classic originals. But when it becomes so blatantly obvious as the Pro Diver example I think it's entirely to give impression of of Sub and I'd be rather surprised if Invicta is not supplying actual fakes since all they need is a slightly different dial bracelet logo. Something like Fifty Five Fathoms on the other hand is never going to look quite like the original and is only paying tribute to one of the most important classics.

Tudor can’t be a homage of Rolex as it’s owned by Rolex. It used to be Rolex’s B line, now it’s starting to develop an identity, although the Rolex influence is present.

AP also sued a small Swiss watch Company called Alfred Hammel for having a similar logo. I found out about this a few yrs ago from a local jeweler who had these Alfred Hammel watches in a display case.

Well, there are some "homages" that cross the line which are essentially replica/"fake" watches that have had the brand name altered. Many are even made in the same factories as the fakes.

Trade dress only applies in some countries, and it varies between them, as each one has its particular Trade dress law. In US, Trade dress rights are enforceable under both state and federal law, but typically, holders of these rights look to the Lanham Act as a source of protection. But it doesn´t applies to chinese homages, because they aren´t made, physically sold, or a constituted brand in US. However, chinese do sell them in the US through ali express page, and selling them is constituted an act of unfair competition. Fair use wouldn´t apply for them as a defense. But also, the design isn´t identical, and they stand out as their own brand, so it is not trademark infringement either. Trade dress focuses on the "looks". Also, Practical functions are Intellectual Property Rights, not Trade dress. I think the World Trade Organization hasn´t put guidelines in Trade dress yet. Swiss Legend is a US watch distributor, and must be subject to the laws of the United States. On the other hand, the Chinese are not. But US federal trademark law also includes online sales. "Infringing goods" are the key words. "Infringing goods" should include Trade dress goods. In US legislation, marketing or promoting infringing goods on a website creates liability for trademark infringement. In europe, the Court of Justice of the EU discussed that the trademark owner has the right to prohibit others from offering "infringing goods", putting them on the market or stocking them for the purposes of sale, under the EU Trademark Regulation. In real life, what will happen with homages watches? Ali express is gonna be banned? there are many reasons why not; some of them may say it is even unconstitutional. But as it is a kind of unfair competition, they can raise tarifs, but then again, that has political implications; we are dealing with china here, hello...

I don't think I'll ever be able to buy a Rolex, yes I can probably save for seven, eight years and get one, but I'd have a problem justifying the purchase. To my mind, the money can be better put on rent, a car or even food on the table. That being said, I also believe that you're only fooling yourself if you've purchased a fake watch. If people know you can't afford a Rolex, the first thing on their mind is it's a fake. For me, homage watches on the other hand serves a way to scratch the itch lusting for a particular design, without trying too hard to pass of a fake as the real one. I have several homage watches, and love them for what they are, well built (for the price) watches that offer people access to iconic designs that otherwise would've been out of reach. Another thing is that the market for homage watches is completely different from the market of top luxury brands, and won't steal market shares away from them. With companies like Rolex who cannot keep up with demand, and prices becoming thousands of dollars above retail, finding one for the right price is becoming a struggle to even the people who have the money to buy one. The only way I'd buy a luxury watch brand is if I win the lottery, my conscience just wouldn't allow me to save for a luxury item, especially if there are more important things that I can put the money into. I'm living comfortably with the meager wage I earn, I'm happy and I'm content. Part of that bliss comes from not being a slave to fashion.

Teddy's example of Tudor and Rolex Sub is a great example. There are other 'accepted' homage Subs like Seiko. So that being the case I think that opens the door for others to do the same. Citizen has a Sub replica so if these examples are 'accepted' then all other properly badged Homage watches should be acceptable as well.
