Why not just wait until someone is a match and tell that individual person about your infidelity? Like that would mean the person was not duped, like he wanted, but also not humiliate his wife in front of the vast majority of their friends and family. Seems like a win-win to me

It was part of his disease that lead to his confessions and wasn't really a "conscious" thought out decision so I'd chalk it up to the disease making his decisions for him. Kind of like the guy who wanted to die to donate all his organs, he had a disease making him want to behave that way and not his conscious self.

Unlikely that the person you told would keep your secret. Even if they did, you'd have to explain why the matched person is suddenly not viable. This was a close-knit small town. Secrets don't tend to last long in that environment. Arguably a clean break is better than becoming the subject of long-term rumours and gossip.
