Your curtains will always be lovely Stephanie full or slimmer style but, the advantages of the pelmet and the extra fabric are that it generally keeps more cold air out of the room in winter :). - says the woman going back to bed in five layers and a velour dressing gown as it’s -3 outside 🥶. ( I really feel the cold !)

Also, the pelmets might function to block any light coming in from the top of the curtains. If one can only sleep in complete darkness, a perfectly sealing pelmet helps, in addition to the blackout lining of the curtains. Unless there are shutters that provide perfect closure.

Enjoyed the catchup today. Years ago I worked at a whitewater rafting company in the USA. I have always sewed and agreed to do a life jacket alteration for a friend but my seam ripper had broken. He went into town to get thread and a new seam ripper and came back indignant that no one knew what a seam "thrasher" was! Fortunately a patient clerk had deduced from his explanation what was required and sent him back with a ripper! I never pick up my "thrasher"(a frequent event) without a smile.

English terms and Americanisms can be quite different. Bonnet is hood to Americans, boot is trunk, and those are just some of the ones that immediately come to mind. I was married to an Englishman in the 90s and it took him a while to adjust. I preferred it when he stuck to his way of saying things as I thought it quaint, but in order to communicate in public he had to adjust. Reminds me of the song "You say tomato, I say tomato... Yes, the French style of curtains is simpler, but I would keep the yellow curtains as you’ve already made them, they are really beautiful. And you’re French and English, so it makes sense that both would be reflected in your design. I get a kick out of your little dog, he’s absolutely adorable and so affectionate. He’s so small you can walk around wearing him in a pouch all day. So cute. And the Chapel is magnificent. Looking forward to an exciting year

Stephanie, one thing to remember is your very cold winters, blanket lined curtains will keep the cold out which I suspect is why they are so heavily used in the UK, especially as you have single glazing as well. You will lose a lot of your heat through the window. I roast the golden beets but slice in the round keeps all the sweet flavour, only every see them in the shops in France though.

Cold is so relative. My relatives near Edmonton, Alberta suffered from a ‘polar vortex’. Temperature was -50C & with the wind chill it felt like -64C. Here in Mississauga, Ontario, our temperature was cold for us yesterday. Temperature was -10C & felt like -18C. I thought that that was plenty cold enough. But we have no snow 👍🏻🇨🇦

A question thought 💭 So the drapery revelation…. If you do reconstruct the drapery’s to a slimmer side panel on either side … you won’t be able to block out light and or keep the cold from coming into the space… So I’m not living in your space but will that become a factor which you may Not be satisfied with If you do in fact make those type of changes ??? The pelmet timber always helps to keep your room warmer, with curtain poles you will always get a draught from the window leaking up and around. I realise your idea is to make it more french, but i think being warm in winter is also a consideration, from Australia

Lasts nights program captured my attention because I am going to sew new curtains & wondered if you could give me the ISBN# & author for your books entitled "The American Day Encyclopedia of Curtains (found a lot that say Curtain Encyclopedia but none looked like yours) & The Swag & Tail Design & Pattern Book (Step by Step Instructions)" . I just love all the drapes, I looked at them on your fb page earlier. The only thing to safely use on expensive material when sewing is a stitch unpicker, I learned from experience having made many curtains, furniture coverings and clothes for myself and family through my life. These days its a bit easier to give a quick steam clean to curyains and bed drapes than washing or dry cleaning. Please let us know what the Black reddish was like, I am so curious. While you are all freezing I am putting up with 22c at night time and 30c + during the day, having grown up in London and winter sports breaks in Scotland, Norway and Austria I think I prefer the heat at my age. I am certain you are aware, but the reason there is so much curtain material around the bed is that they would close up the bed completely to keep warm in those unheated bedrooms. I learned this from "A Christmas Carol," the film from 1951, that is. The bedclothes are such a strong feature in this film, a subplot even!

If you look into the paintings of the old great masters, you notice the differences in houses from the UK to Europe. All older European houses have shutters inside, sometimes outside. Thick lavish curtains would block the shutters from closing. Hence the easier, thinner cutrains. Less heads and more draping.

It was -9° C last night here in north Texas (Dallas/Ft.Worth), so I can imagine how Nattie feels in a château heated by log burners. I remember winter in central France being bone chilling. To. Elgin with, as far as curtains go, I think more is … more and happily so. The curtains you have made already and, in particular, the swags and pelmets are nothing short of epic. However, and as a sewer myself, when I saw the tiny ripper (I own one myself. Who knew?) and the gargantuan task you faced with the bijillions of miles of curtain edge to be unpicked, my inner being shrunk to the size of a peanut. Your fortitude knows no bounds, my dear! It is almost ( but not quite) as big a job as Dan’s chateau renovation. Well, you know what I mean! I agree with you that Amaury’s gorgeous workshop is a wonder to behold. Its interesting that there is less fabric to he more French. The outdoor shutters help to block the sun on the am, and with insulation. I think the thicker curtains also help with keeping the room.warm?

It’s true. I drove semis for many years. Refrigerated trailers, foods. If something left an odor behind, a few cans of cheap coffee sprinkled over the floor, few hours later, no smell.

Seam ripper tip from a video I saw. Insert the short side with the plastic ball under the stitching. It means you can just push without worrying about the pronged bit making a hole in ur fabric. A real game changer .

I would keep the curtains wider and continue to insulate because this is an old castle with single glazing you can keep more heat in and I think your curtains always look great I would check the books, but do my own thing

Most people do not realize that the early Greek and Roman temples were also painted in beautiful bright colors. Imagine the Parthenon painted in the same gorgeous colors as your chapel. Did I hear you say you had roast pork for Lancelot? My Vet said, never give a dog roast pork it can make them sick and give them diarrhea. That's why there are no dog foods on the market with pork. Sorry about the bad news and I guess you will live and learn!

Stephanie that black raddish would go good pickled. Especially if you cooked pork. The acidity cuts through the richness of the pork. If you ever have a bunch again and don't know what to do with them. They keep really well.
