If you google what is the best form of exercise, the result you will see will be walking. While it doesn’t burn the most calories, you can do it for a long time, it gets your heart rate up and improves your cardiovascular system, it has a relatively low impact on the body, and just about everyone can do it. So it makes walking one of the most sustainable forms of exercise for most people. Also, it’s really fun to get outdoors, maybe talk to a friend while doing it, or listen to a podcast or book and learn at the same time!
Now 10,000 steps a day has long been the suggested goal for most people, but the average American typically only gets 3000 to 4000 steps in each day.
Now I am no stranger to walking challenges. I've done several in the past, but before attempting this endeavor, I got my diet under control by changing my eating habits. I went from 198.2 pounds, down to 187.4. Then I stagnated and stayed around 188 lbs for several weeks. I knew I needed to kick it up a notch to get over this plateau.
So for the next 30 days I decided to dedicate as much time as I could to walking to find out what kind of results I could get. So here is what I found out from this experiment.
According to the data, to get the most out of your walk, you need to make sure you walk at a brisk pace. For me, this is between 3 to 4 miles per hour.
Now I know it may be difficult to gauge how quickly we are walking, so I recorded myself on the treadmill at various speeds so you can get an idea of exactly how fast you have to be walking to be at these speeds.
Here is one mile per hour
Here is two miles per hour
Here is three miles per hour
Here is four miles per hour
Here is five mile per hour
Walking around 3.5 miles per hour I can get in around 6500 steps per hour. This speed keeps my heart rate in the 110 to 120 beats per minute range.
I dedicated at least 2 hours towards strictly walking every day, some days I had more time and could dedicate 3 or 4 hours and I combined these steps with the normal number of steps I take in any given day to come up with the total number of steps I took for the day.
In the course of 30 days, I averaged 27,607 steps per day, for a grand total of 828,229 steps for the month! This comes out to a total of 414 miles for the month! That’s greater than the distance of the state of Kansas (410 miles wide)
The increased walking clearly had a positive effect on my cardiovascular system. My resting heart rate also went from 62 beats per minute to 57 beats per minute.
I found I burnt about 45 calories for every 1000 steps I took, so when you combine the burnt calories from walking with my basal metabolism rate, I burnt around 3000 calories a day.
When sticking to a healthy diet I was dropping about 2 pounds every week. This was a healthy amount of weight to lose in a week.
Diet is really a very important part of losing weight and maintaining health, that truly can’t be stressed enough. When you combine a good diet with just brisk walking, I promise you will see results.
I’ve covered my diet in a previous video, but if you missed it, I want to cover it again just to show you how just changing my diet made a huge difference in my overall health.
So with a healthy diet and over 25 thousand steps a day, my weight went from 188 pound down to 178.6 pounds over the course of 30 days. Some other impress stats that changed were:
My BMI went from 26.3 to 25
My total body fat went from 20.9% down to 18.9%
My subcutaneous fat (the fat stored in the skin) dropped from 18.2% down to 16.7%
My Visceral Fat (the fat stored around your organs went from 9 to 7

Thanks for doing this- I have lost almost 40 pounds in the past year and struggle with getting the last 10 pounds off- I’ll be implementing this for the next month to see how I get on! Update: it’s been 23 days since I started doing this.. I set a goal of 20,000 steps a day. I was already averaging 10,000 daily steps so I really needed to get creative to add more steps with 2 toddlers at home. No changes to my diet and I’ve dropped from 141lbs to 136lbs with a final target of 130! Turns out I just needed to move more to reach my goal weight, and I’m glad I didn’t have to drop my calories anymore than I already had in the past year…in fact I may have eaten slightly more on a few of the days. Thanks! New update: it’s now the 24th of may. I started walking 20k steps on march 13th and have gone from 141 to 131 pounds. 1 more pound to get to my 130 pound target! I did have to dial in my diet to get the last 3 pounds off but not too drastically.

I'm a gas leak surveyor Basically I walk gasolines in service lines up to houses looking for leaks i keep track of my walking with a amazon fitbit and i walk Easily at least 10,000 steps everyday Usually before noon Averaging 18,000 steps A day. I really recommend this type of work. You don't have to go to college and you get to be active and enjoy the outdoors all day. It is good paying utility job.

I moved overseas and I don't own a car. I got hooked on walking. I average 15,000 steps a day and I lost about 10 pounds just by walking. Also the American diet is horrible.... On the weekends, I would get up to 30,000 steps. My friends think I am crazy but I love walking. I get to see more with walking and love exploring. You can't imagine some of the things I get to discover just by walk instead of taking the bus or taxi.

I’ll see if I can remember to update everyone here. Been a big fan of you Simple Man for a few years now, and have never stopped inspiring me, especially when I began to gain weight again. I lost 75 pounds in 8 months doing this, but I found managing it after is difficult your body wants to put the weight back on the moment you stop the walking even if your diet is the same. My advice is keep a close eye on your weight daily or 5 pounds might creep back up on you within a week or so. Managing it after is the most frustrating part but eventually your body accepts and gets used to the new weight

Best advice I ever heard 'You can't out train a bad diet', have a piece of advice for people walking, get a good heart rate monitor and use that to measure your calories, the step counter on my phone, and the one in my smart watch gives me a calorie value almost 3 times higher than my dedicated HRM for any given exercise, I as assume its because I have been walking a long time and my efficiency has increased, but I walk 15 to 20 miles every day at about 4.2 to 4.5 mph, and my heart rate rarely goes above 100, the first time I used a chest worn HRM and it gave me feedback on my heart rate I actually stopped and took it manually as I didn't believe it, my watch had been saying I was averaging 110 to 115 BPM, the proper measure turned out to be 80 to 85, so you can see how the Calories were way off

I typically get 15-25K every single day year round. Mainly because I just love to be active outside. A great hack is to divide it over the whole entire day. I'll typically do 3/30 min walks over the first 8hrs I'm awake. Then I'll do 15 min walks every few hrs. Doing this never feels like a grind vs when I used to do a 90 min every morning and then a second long walk in the afternoon.

Hi, thank you for this vlog. I live in Ireland, where I’m from, by the sea (lucky me !!!). I used to live in Georgia, USA. In Ireland, we walk a lot. In fact sometimes it’s just easier than taking a car and certainly less stressful. Typically I walk every morning before work and then again for at least an hour or two in the evening, before bed. This really helps with sleep and certainly the dog loves it too !!! People here socialise by walking, something that never happened in the States. Typically my step count is @ 23k per day and doing more at the weekends as this involves trips to beach etc. Can I ask you what App you use for body composition as per vlog ?

Not to be a debbie downer, but to keep it realistic for anyone watching those "calories burned" figures are WAY off. There's no way you are burning anywhere near those numbers unless you are walking up a mountain. On flat ground or quite frankly any incline short of a cliff face, you aren't burning even half that, probably not even a quarter. 1000ish calories burned for circa 25,000 steps would be closer to realistic. Good results though!

For sure jogging is great, although it’s a bit harder on your body and most people can’t do it for as nearly as long. But if you can that’s great!

You'll get used to it! I average between 22k and 25k steps a day and I just wear flat parkour shoes with no insole. It just takes time for the muscles in your feet to strengthen up so it's easier if you add distance slowly.

Your stats showed you also lost a 4 pound non fat mass. I presume this means you lost muscle mass in the 4 weeks?

25 km (25.000 steps) of walking each day, that sounds painful xD for me it's 25 km, i am 2 meters tall and take large steps. if you ever get to 1 million subscribers then you could do a challenge where you walk 33334 steps a day. why? because it's 1 MILLION steps in only 1 month! :D
