Back in 2009 my husband lost his construction business due to the credit crunch. We sold everything we could to survive. It didn’t take long for everything we had worked over a decade for to be gone. He had paid higher rate taxes and we had never claimed anything. We both were working full time to support ourselves, then due to the weather (beast from the east)my husband had 10 weeks without work. We had higher outgoings than income. My husband was forced for the first time in his career to apply for benefits to help us feed our children. We were told that we couldn’t claim anything. I noticed that there was a form about emergency funds for families who needed help. We were then told this was only available to non British nationals. It completely changed our perspective on this country and its lack of support for those who really need it. Why should someone come from another country and be entitled to anything other than the basic needs? They should be removed the same day if their asylum claim is denied and as asylum seekers they should not be entitled to settlement status at all (there should be a focus on returning them back to their home countries as soon as it’s safe for them) Our own people should be prioritised over asylum seekers. Until we have no homeless, no need for food banks and a better standard of living for everyone born here, there should be no help other than the bare necessities for anyone else. I’m sick of feeling like we matter less than foreigners in our own country.

In 1979 - 84 i did engineering and went to luton college - it went from a balanced city to being acforeign hostile place - So sad 😞. Luton is already overcrowded but they dumped a load of Boat People in the town centre area into some hotels. Central Beds and Herts Councils refused to take them so Luton Council were forced to take them. The Town Centre is horrible loads of them hanging around atms ready to rob you. Lots of pickpockets etc loads of kids not allowed to go into the shopping area as parents won't let them due to the influx of these men. A lot of the coffee shops have closed down due to no one going into them especially the oaps who would once enjoy meeting up with friends for a coffee. You don't see them going into the shopping centre anymore. I heard of loads of people having bags, wallets, phones stolen along with their actual shopping bags!
