I’ve put about 4,000 shells through mine and have had it for almost 3 years and a lot of field use. It is in the same condition as new, no malfunction ever, one of the most underrated O/U in my opinion.

I shoot a Benelli 828U Nickel 30" in Field Trials, Hunt Tests, Dove & Upland Hunting. I shoot bottom barrel first which slightly minimizes the barrel rise. I can carry it all day without wearing me out. I've shot appx 5k with no issues. It is my favorite shotgun!

I have the 828u sport, which i have had since 2019, the sport weighs in around 8lb, i shoot clays most weeks. as you say it can be adjusted the same as a semi auto. the ejectors are gas operated and sometimes won't eject the cartridge case. but last week it developed an issue with the unlocking lever which became stiff and unusable. its had to do back for repair under warranty, if i find out the cause will post it here.

I have the 20 gauge version...Love it for what it was made for, hunting! Obviously as well as you shoot you don't need to use a 12 gauge. My thought is that you would enjoy the 20 gauge more. I don't have 2500 rounds through it or even close. But I have not had any problems with it at all. Love your stuff. God bless.

Just a suggestion, on O/U shotguns when you do the trigger pull weight if it has a mechanicl trigger, see what the weight of the second barrel is.

I have a nickel 12 gage. I use it exclusively for up upland hunting and love it. I removed the automatic safety spring which was very easy. My only gripe is the safety is stiff and difficult at times with any glove except leather shooting gloves. It's sexy, fun to carry, light and I rarely need the second barrel. Love it...

I have the 12 gauge 828U 30" field with a nickel receiver. True, it's not a traditional over and under, but that's part of the attraction. I have been very pleased with the feel, function and adjustability. The recoil is noticeable but not intolerable especially for field use. I have not experienced a single malfunction. I do enjoy the look of the fish scale checkering. My favorite thing is that I also have a Benelli Ethos Super Sport in 28 gauge and with the exception of the weight, they share the raised carbon fiber rib and a very similar mount and feel (at least for me) and I'm better able to acquire the target with the raised rib. The low weight of the 828U makes it an easy gun to carry in the field as well. Thanks Steve, for all the good content.

I bought my 828u in June 2018! This is one of the first with the aluminium receiver. All newer models now have a steel receiver, I wonder why. It has processed around 12000 shells with no issues. Not long ago I recognized a small crack in the front stock, but nothing to replace. I really love this gun after I made a significant modification to the rear stock. As you already mentioned the biggest disadvantage is the hard recoil, because of the light weight. By instance I found a cheap solution: In the rear stock there is enough space to add some weight. By try and error I have now appprox. 500gr. lead inside. This does wonder, but does not ruin the weight balance (for me, because I think originally it is too heavy at front!). Just take an old sock and fill it with lead as required, then install it. You really will be surprised! The damping device in the rear stock works fine and together with my B&P Competion One shells, I can shoot all day long without having issues with the shoulder or anything.

The carbon fiber rib is designed like to have some movement. carbon fiber doesn't expand and contract with heat so as the barrel heats up the ribs stand off's tighten up just enough .after you shoot it and the barrel's hot check and see it won't have any play in it

Thanks for the review. I've put a few rounds through one of these on the clay target range and it's "different" feeling compared to other o/u shotguns that I've used. Here are a few things to be aware of with your review gun. The carbon fiber rib that Benelli and Beretta put on their shotguns is a floating rib and easily replaceable. This is where the play you're feeling comes in and is normal for this type of rib. The face slap in recoil could very well be down to gun fit and recoil pad pitch in particular. One of my lightest feeling guns in recoil is a 1937 Superposed Trap gun where due to how the stock fits the recoil forces are distributed very well. That firearm with 30 inch barrels weighs just over 7.25 lbs so it's light Where you talk about how durable a shotgun is I know two shooters that run Beretta 682 target guns heavily. Both of them have had their guns rebuilt a couple of times. They have gotten in each case 80,000-100,000 rounds down the barrels between rebuilds and yes they're high volume shooters. I have 2 Superposed shotguns that I picked up used so don't know the total number of rounds down either gun. Both are Trap guns that I've changed so I can use them for Sporting and International Skeet. One gun was built in 1964 and the other 1937. The 1964 gun opens easier than the 1937 gun but the top lever is still at the 4:30 position when the gun is closed. The 1937 gun opens tighter but the top lever is at 6:00 so I'll be looking to send it out in the off season for a rebuild. The thing is that the 1937 gun locks up just as tight as the 1964 gun. The bottom line is that a quality shotgun from a well established maker will last for a VERY long time. The key to it is parts availability. Browning, Beretta, Perazzi, Kreighoff, and a few others are very good about having parts available for their guns.

Don't mind the text me, So much for KZbin censorship and these scamers post freely. My Mom bought me a Browning Superposed when about 19 in 1970. And was spoiled by the quality of that gun for ever, 12Ga 26" I/C-Mod, Not for clays but shot plenty to stay in shape, 100's of Ducks, Quail, Rabbits, Peckary, Deer and you name it, Only twice has been to Gunsmith, once because trigger wouldn't fire secong barrel( just dirt/gum) and another for rebluing. Opening by the barrel weight(without force and slick) is the standard to compare others. Still the only 12 Ga I own plus a 20 Ga Moss. 500 👍

Good point! I have a Browning 725 Sporting and both sears are very close, but I also have a couple nice Turkish guns that I had to work on to both match the triggers to both barrels and to match the Browning (so I could be consistent, gun to gun). I do a lot of light gunsmithing so it was a not a big deal. If I was new to all this, I'd take them to a real gun smith!

Was going to buy one of these, until I saw all the online horrible reviews of problems people have with the gun and for the past 3 years. Things like: Light primer strikes with top barrel Cracking foreend grip Action locking up where one can’t break open the gun. I’m going instead with the Beretta 686 or 687. The 680-series action is bullet proof for the past three decades.

I was the same way, I wanted to love that gun but…. I had “two” of them in 20 Ga. 1st one, you had to fight to get the safety off and ejectors would only work half the time. The gun (new gun) was sent back to Benelli. Benelli fixed the issues however when I tried to change chokes the top barrel was difficult to screw the choke tube in even after using the thread cleaning portion of the choke wrench (at dealer), and the threading of the barrel appeared to be tapped non-concentric. The dealer offered to give me a refund or I could drive 110 miles to their other store to get another one ( the store at that time was not allowed to ship between their stores. I really wanted one of those guns so drove the 220 miles round trip. Tried the chokes that were in the gun and although snug all seemed to be ok. When I returned home I found there were two Mod chokes and no IC. I called the local dealer and they sent me an IC. That choke arrived the next day (great service) but when I tried to screw the choke in it wouldn’t screw into either barrel. I drove two hours to the “local” dealer and showed them the problem and they verified it.With all the issues we had with those two guns they couldn’t believe it. We screwed the other chokes in and noticed there was a bit of scoring on those chokes. After looking closely we determined that those barrels “appeared” to be tapped non-concentric as well. They/I couldn’t believe it. They apologized and agreed there was a definite issue and again offered a refund or different gun. I decided to go with a Beretta 20 ga silver pigeon. It has been operating flawlessly. I also had minor issues with a Benelli Super Black Eagle I had so finally got rid of it. Needless to say, no more Benelli’s for me.

Great gun, but it needs to have ported barrels to help with recoil reduction and better follow-up targeting. Would be nice to have an interchangeable bead for different light conditions, and the bead needs to be slightly larger for my taste. I will be contacting Benelli about porting, or it will be sent off to Briley or Magna tech to get it done. The strangest thing I found is how the barrels seem to stay cool to the touch even after shooting multiple double consecutive clay sets.

I purchased the nickel 828 in 20 gauge for hunting. It's light and a breeze to carry all day. It points really well and I shoot it well. I have two problems with it. First, the stock got wet hunting grouse in Maine and delaminated. Second, the safety is stiff. It's not a problem without gloves on. With gloves on forget it. Overall, light, good looking, and good shooter, but too expensive

* As a shotgun tailored for the bird field, does it come with the option for double triggers. If not its not much of an all around bird gun, IMO. The reason you shot over the top of that target is because you're trying to shoot to fast instead of just trying to break the target. You just missed that target.

Interesting factoid. Why “828U?” The shotgun is manufactured in Benelli’s plant in the 15th-century Renaissance town of Urbino, Italy. 828 is, essentially, Urbino’s UNESCO zip code. The U is for Urbino.

In my opinion, the Franchi is a much more reliable and better shooting shotgun than the Benelli. Especially when it comes to comparing the Affinity to the SBE3. I own both the Franchi I-12 and the Franchi Affinity. They have been great guns, I have had issues with losing the bolt handle with I-12, but Franchi fixed that with the Affinity. I owned the SBE3 performance shop waterfowl Rob Roberts Edition ($3400 shotgun) and that was the worst shotgun that I’ve ever owned in my life. The ribs on them are sopose to be a little loose from what i was told the other day if they where tight they would be under stress when the gun gets hot

Everyone who buys this gun for hunting but spends most of their time shooting clays complains its too much recoil because its too light and this review is no different. The rib is loose on all of them. For a field gun where are you shooting ground game, this gun is great. For clay targets you will complain until you sell it it.

Looks like the comb and lop wasn’t working for you as your cheek was pressed into the stock more than it should I bet an extra inch would’ve made the difference. I shot a demo 828u and never had the slap . Talk about face slap should do old gun reviews I have an Ithaca model 900 long recoil

Great review as always, I was excited about the weight but the kick like a mule ruined it. My refined Beretta shotguns are perfect weight and balanced. Beretta has hundreds years of experience and build master pieces.

Benelli has always been different from the mainstream. They had a 6-cylinder 750cc motorcycle. That business failed! Must have had enough money left over for the gun pundits.

I shot one and gave it a fair chance. 100 rounds later I’m looking for my teeth fillings. Hard pass for me.

I really believe that is the few that have had issue that complained. I know 4 people that own them, including myself, and it’s been nothing but stellar.

I bought mine in early 2019 and have put about 18k rounds through it between skeet and sporting clays and I absolutely love it. They’re very reliable and shoot true. Several of my friends had them before me and I let them test out the new model before I pulled the trigger.

I had one for a year, Loved it and it worked flawlessly, it did slap a bit with heavier loads, but then it will, it’s INSANELY light. You can’t fight physics. Trigger wasnt particularly crisp and I bought a heavier gun. Am now looking for a lighter 12g to shoot lighter loads through for a lady, this gun would have been perfect.. so may end up buying another 😆

The Gould Brothers are great shooters. Business 101 not so much. I was notified last wk I was a Sweepstakes winner of a Beretta Silver Pigeon shotgun. If you were a winner, would you pay over $300 to get it ? after 2hrs on text with Steve I refused. Been around for 74yrs now. This was a dud. No RULES even. Do not comment or reply. I am grabbing my Benelli's right now and hitting some clays for practice bird hunts this fall. I am unsubscribing.
