I had a similar experience where I was riding my motorcycle and the way to work and came across a woman with a flat tire, so I pulled over, (knowing that this would make me late to my work) And started to help her, as I was removing the bolts from her tire she angrily said, “how long is this going to take cause I have an appointment at my hair salon” I just stared at her in disbelief and dropped the jack and bolts and returned to my motorcycle and left…. I figured fate or karma would change the tire for her, as I sure as heck wasn’t !!!!

She definitely shouldn’t have said that, but she was probably just frustrated at the situation-not at you; and she probably just doesn’t know how to edit herself. I stopped on my way to work and helped a lady get off the road so I could safely change her tire. She asked what kind of work I did, I told her and told her where I worked, 3 days later a thank you card showed up with a gift card to a local restaurant. There are good, respectful and thankful people out there.

I agree. A couple of years ago I dug out a van stuck in the snow in front of my house. Imagine my surprise when Christmas rolled around 10 months later and I found a gift and a nice thank-you card in my mailbox. This lady remembered all those months, and took the time to go out of her way to say thanks.

I'll be 100% honest, I only hold doors for guys. Had plenty of woman walk on past without even an acknowledgement. Every guy I hold the door for goes out of their way to say thank you.

The way to fix that is say Thank You! as they go through the door - they will look at you and then you say - that was the common courtesy word you couldn't remember, you are welcome.

I can’t tell you how many times a woman has let a door close in my face. As if I’m invisible. I always hold a door or help a woman in anyway, but I’m not going out of my way for an unknown woman anymore.

I experienced the same thing about 10-15 years ago and was stunned to silence when the lady scolded me for holding the door for her. I hung in there and kept doing what I was taught and for the most part most are very appreciative, for some reason, especially older black women. I've gotten a couple of hugs over the years from them and just the most sincere thank-yous.

As a 67 year woman, brought up to appreciate and respect a man's integrity, strength and inate human code to protect women, I understand EXACTLY what you are saying. Entitled, spoiled women stuck emotionally at 13 are a plague now, and I feel sorry for young men who run the risk with a date, or interaction with these toxic women who with a single lie of how a man behaved, could ruin a man's life.. They think nothing of lying to "get evan" or "just for fun" they are sick, arrogant and and dangerous. I for one, thank every man who is kind enough to hold a door for me or extend a kindness.

About 10 years ago I was driving through our neighborhood, with my family, and I saw an old woman struggling to mow her lawn (more weeds than grass) with a push mower. It was the worst time to be mowing on a blazing hot sunny day. I pulled over and told my wife to head home. I asked the woman if she needed help. She happily gave me the mower and I proceeded to manicure her weeds and do some cleanup. When I was done she thanked me and I was off. On my walk home, I felt on top of the world. I had time to reflect so I questioned why I felt this way. I realized that when I was helping others I was my best self and it gave me rush of happiness. Since then it has become sort of a selfish pursuit that benefits others. I think often about thanking that old lady for letting me mow her lawn! You open doors and plow streets because you were raised right, you like doing it and are a good person. Don't stop out of spite. From what I can tell, it is not who you are.

Absolutely 💯 correct as a woman stuck in the snow a time or 3 I have always always given or offered to pay or mail if they would accept it. Most of them would just take a 10.00 or 20.00 depending on what I had on me at the time. So sad these younger people are so ungrateful to anyone person that does a kind act, just so sad. God will judge each of us according to His design and our cooperation with that. Men do an awful lot to make our lives easier. This is a very important topic especially in regards to women. There was a man in my area who pulled over and helped a woman change her flat tire. Later he was arrested for sexual harassment. Now no man in my area is willing to help a woman who's stuck on the side of the road unless she is a relative.

@The Badderman Many of us were in the bar when word came that he was arrested. Later the charges were dropped and he was released because the woman had one of those recording devices that hang from the rear view mirror. She actually had evidence that he made no advances at her at all. Apparently she was just one of these city born feminist throwing a fit because some man condescended to help her with something. I also note that she got no charges placed against her for falsely accusing and having someone arrested. The judge apparently decided just to throw it out.

As 50 year old lady, there has *NEVER* been a single time in my life when any gentleman (or anyone) held the door open for me, or opened a car door for me or gone out of their way to help me in any way at all, out of the goodness of their hearts, that I didn’t express my true appreciation. And there never will be. I’ve helped strangers before and they behaved like I was their butler, and didn’t even acknowledge what I’d done. Several times I have opened the door for women who were feminists and was told in an angry tone "I DON'T NEED YOU TO OPEN THE DOOR FOR ME" and they refused to walk through! The first time I just said whatever and went about my business! Every time since I don't say a word I just go through the door then hold it shut and laugh at them and say find another way in! Once one decided to have a tug of war with me and as soon as she yanked on the door I let go and she ended up on her backside! Put a smile on my face the rest of the day!

Good on you for helping her out, I’m still at a loss from her reaction. My kids and I stopped at a gas station last Sunday afternoon on our way home from taking care of my daughter’s horse. It’s been rainy here, so we all had muddy boots and pants, looking pretty rough overall I’m sure. There was a young lady in line ahead of us that was buying $3 worth of gas, telling the clerk she was hoping it was enough to get her to work. She looked at my kids laughing and told them getting muddy is fun stuff. My daughter, who is 11, asked if she could use some money she got at Christmas to buy the girl some more gas. I was so proud of my little girl at that moment. Outside we caught up with her by the pump and filled up her old Suburban and ended up giving her what cash I had on me (maybe $70). I also gave her my number and told her to call me if she got in a bind. She gave us all a big hug and thanked us multiple times. I’m so proud of my little girl, maybe there’s some hope for future generations after all (I’m 44 and say that half-jokingly).

One of the most important lessons I ever got was from my great grandfather. He used to always go out and try to help his significantly younger, not very appreciative neighbors shovel their walks during the winter. My region gets some pretty nasty winters, too. Keep in mind this is a guy in his late 70's already when I was born, but also one of the physically toughest guys I ever met. Even when he was in his early 90's he'd still go out there and try to help his neighbors with their walks, even though it was clearly quite painful for him, and my dad, my grandfather, my uncles myself and my brother when we'd visit quickly decided the only way to keep him from hurting himself was to sneak out and somehow manage to beat him to doing it first. My great grandfather's response once he caught on was to literally get up before sun up and do so. I don't remember who asked him why he did it but once they did, my great grandfather gave a very simple to the point answer: "So they know it's okay to help your neighbors." Eventually my great grandfather got to old, and was in to much pain to be able to shovel his own driveway and sidewalk. But we'd always find someone had already done it for him when he'd go over there on snowy days to help him out. Don't know who it was, but his lesson had stuck with someone. As difficult as it is, just remember the good we do to others, often has a way of coming back to us in one way or another.

Man, you hit the nail on the head there. As a recently retired secondary teacher in the UK, I do feel that there is a whole bunch of kids coming through who are far too entitled. I gave up countless hours of my time taking kids into the mountains and so rarely did either the kids, or their parents, say thanks. The parents would usually pull up in their car at school and sit in it waiting for their child. When I was a kid doing things like that my parents always made a point of thanking the trip leader. Like you say, just not raised right.

I drive a truck delivering food to upity ski resorts and resort towns for a living. The amount of disrespect and disregard I see for me and my fellow trucker brothers is at times unbearable. This is some of the most horrible weather I have ever had to drive in… it is extremely stressful. One of my delivery drivers was out and I ran his route one day. The female receptionist at one of my stops was incredibly rude to me. She thought I was just a delivery guy and didn’t know I was the GM. I had a meeting with that business to renegotiate their contract a week later. She didn’t remember me, but wow was she incredibly nice to me when I walked in wearing a suit and tie. I learned a lot that day - she didn’t.

I drove a tow truck for a few years back in 99-2004 when I was in my 30's. We would get snow-birds that would break down on I-75 through the heart of Florida. I have left several on the side of the road after they refused to stop cussing at me. One in particular, she was a high-strung, fowl mouthed yankee and immediately started dropping f-bombs. I cut her off and explained that we were the only AAA contractor in the area and if she did not stop berating me I would drive off and call AAA to tell them what was going on and they would not re-dispatch me to assist her. That lasted about 5 minutes until I asked her what she planned to do with the trailer she was towing. She told me I should have brought a bigger flat bed because the last time she needed a tow her truck and trailer fit on the deck. As nicely as I could, I explained that no such tow truck existed and that it would have to have a 40' deck. The f-bombs started again and I just calmly walked away and got in my truck and drove off, she was screaming f-bombs and flipping me off as I drove by. The weird thing is, I was working a wreck and had just finished when the call came in. I was less than 200 feet from her and could see her red chevy blazer and trailer just in front of me. My response time was literally less than 3 minutes and I thought, this lady is going to think the AAA contractors in florida are super-two operators with that kind of ETA. I was wrong.

If one imagines the interstate highways as arteries, and the county roads as capillaries, then each truck is like a blood cell. When the flow of blood stops, the body begins to die. I stopped to help a family change a spare tire. The husband was in nice clothes, and there was mom, and three kids in the van. I was in scrubby clothes and had the opportunity to help. I did not recognize any of the adults, as I was more intent on changing the tire. I was shocked to hear one of the County Commissioners, at the next Commission meeting, gave me kudos for helping his family out. That was very nice of him to thank me in a public meeting.

Some years ago my friend Bill and I were driving to Chaco NM on a dirt road that even the National Park Service warns people about when we came upon a woman from LA and her 9 year old daughter in a Buick sedan with a flat tire. She was so relieved to see a woman with a man who changed her tire. Bill refused to accept any pay so she asked our names and addresses and two weeks later we received beautiful gift baskets from LA. I'm so glad we were able to make their visit to amazing Chaco a memorable experience.

Working hard with them when I could, and literally making dinner and doing laundry when I couldn't. Too man young people never SEE work being done. Things magically happen.

I’ve been berated on numerous occasions for coming to the aid of what was a young woman struggling with ____. I’m a rather charismatic, un-intimidating, and unassuming individual as well-so it’s not like I was doing these things in arrogance or with an air of superiority. Anyways, in every case I was told that I was degrading that individual because by helping I had “assumed” they were incapable of doing said activity themselves. I’m a woman, live in Texas, and used to travel alone, and a few times I got in a bind, and men came to my rescue. They were like angels in my sight. I’ve always appreciated any man wanting to help me-no matter what it’s for. I don’t understand these women. There are men like this too-I “very briefly” dated a guy who didn’t like to be given advice or suggestions whatsoever by a woman, no matter how much that woman cared or had his best interest in mind. Get still and pray. Ask God to help you be discerning, to see things as they truly are. Ask him to guide you to be honest w/yourself, for any responsibility, then ask him to guide you as you earnestly try to make things better for all in (your home), tobe the best man God gave us the abilities to be. This will most likely be hard, our enemy (satan) wants you to get mad and call out blame only. With your heart set to get to the root of problems, earnestly trying to do right, (and promptly acknowledge it when we stumble, ask for forgiveness and guidance, and adjust). Nonzero chance the child ends up alienated from you and raised by the mother you're trying to separate from. But it's worth considering what message sticking around and putting up with it sends. Maybe there's another way to address the issue, like others have said. If your work isn't appreciated, then maybe it's not warranted.

Me and my fiancee had a flat tire while driving out on the countryside a while back. We had a spare tire but the bolts had gotten stuck and we didn't have the tools to loosen them, really frustrating. A lot of cars drove past us but after some time a young guy stopped and asked if we needed help. We explained the problem and he drove of to his garage nearby to get some tools. He then came back and helped us. We were super thankful and offered to pay him but he refused. I don't understand how you can not show appreciation when someone saves your day.

This really hit a nerve with me, I thought I brought my daughter up to respect men and I thought I also showed respect to my wife(who is amazing) and have always been able to support my family and my wife was able to stay home raise the kids and work with our animals. Unfortunately, after my daughter was old enough to head out on her own she went to Colorado, and also spent some time in Portland Oregon and that was when we noticed a change in her, she is now 27 she hates all men, says the woman has been "kept down" and she always says "I'm mansplaing" what ever that is to her. The system they grew up in told them they were special meanwhile boys were not allowed to be boys anymore. So now we have a young generation of entitled stuck up girls and boys who can't fend for themselves and don't know how to stand up for themeselves because it was always oppressed by teachers, parents,... I have given up trying to find a partner because I know we will value different things. She will want a 'modern man' chasing tiktok clout while I want to engagewith people on a deeper level. I open doors for others and help wherever I can and 90% percent of the time it is no look in the eye, not even a smile. I've got a few thoughts based on similar situations I've encountered helping other people out around here who were stuck in the snow. We've got a similar climate and opportunities abound. 1. Thanks are typically only given in about 50% of cases, with half of those "thank you's" delivered frowning and curtly. 1b. The only ones who thank me are the ones who know me (eg neighbors). 2. It usually doesn't work out well to just show up and start helping (which is my instinct). Nowadays, I'm more likely to pull up, roll down the window, and ask if they would like a hand. Gauge the attitude and the situation. If they seem ambivalent, I move on. 3. If they want help, I'll hand them a shovel while I hook up the strap to my truck. I Let them crawl under their car after they dig and hook it up themselves 4. I try to remember the people who've pulled me out over the years...many of them strangers. 5. I also wonder if this isn't how God feels about our attitudes when we ask for more and more, when we already have it all 6. Let your thankless service to others be an act of thanksgiving and worship. Sometimes this happens to remind us of our ego that may be looking for value in the wrong places.

My spouse and I tried helping out a young newlywed couple last year, we're military and try to help out soldiers in the unit. Gave them a place to live for about half a year, so they could have time to find their own. They ate out of our fridge, never did any cleaning around the house, used our internet enough to make the ISP send us an increased bill; Never even told us thanks when they left, and they left the livingroom thrashed with trash everywhere and the TV on. We rarely bothered them, only spoke to them to let them know dinner was done. Gave them the utmost respect for space that we could. In the end, they just used the hell out of us and have never spoken to us again. I will never open my home to another person ever again. We don't try to make friends anymore, because everyone we meet treats us this way. Your experience reminded me of it.

Hi Cody. I could feel your frustration through this whole post. I have lived a life of community service, as a firefighter, Scout leader, EMS, fire service instructor and being a helpful neighbor, as you are. I stopped one day to help a young lady that had been towing a boat. The hitch coupler came unconnected and the trailer Tongue was wedged under her car. I got the hitch reconnected and gave her my spare safety pin. the light wire pig tail was cut through, so I repaired that. All the time I was working she kept asking why I was doing it, why would I do it, what was I helping her for. She could not wrap her mind around the fact that I was just being helpful and kind to a stranger in need. When I said I was all done, she got in her car and drove away acting like I had inconvenienced her. No thanks or even a smile.

I chalk it up, mainly to city folk vs rural folk. A city raised person is wise to question the motives of anyone who's offering free help because in the city nobody's expected to be able to afford the time or effort without getting something out of it. Friendliness from strangers is suspicious and frightening for them - they end up instant fight or flight mode. Conversely they themselves are always in a rush, too busy looking for their next buck to just help someone out. They're victims of circumstance as much as whoever they happen to interact with, they've appropriated an missapplied these words such as "community" because they have no idea what one actually is. In the city, everyone's an outcast, an opportunist criminal or scammer waiting in the wings until otherwise proven. And the subtle fear that the most dangerous thing around you is your own species is always drilled into the back of the mind of a city dweller.

As a woman this drives me nuts. I thank everyone for helping me regardless if it's something small or big. I lost power the day before yesterday and stopped at my local gas station to grab something hot before I went home. I ran into my electric lineman and offered to buy them coffee. Thank them for coming out in this horrible weather, they told me the manager already took care of them. I still thanked them immensely, they were climbing into bucket trucks and fixing the power lines during a storm that had 50 mph wind gust and driving snow. Within an hour my power was back on, and I was grateful.

Years ago I held an elevator button for a girl hurrying towards it. When she got in the lift, she berated me for holding the lift for her, apparently it is demeaning for her. So I waited for her to finish and gave her a damned lecture on how some people were brought up to show respect to ladies, and that when she was racing to the door I had no way of knowing that she was not one. Two older woman in the back of the elevator clapped the speech and she had to stand there red-faced as the slow lift went up a couple of floors. I still will always open doors, give up my seat on the bus, offer to help, because of the decent ones still out there.

Good words Cody. I work as a cashier, and I have many of our power company line men (and a couple of women too!) Come through my line getting their lunch supplies at 6am or so. I always make them know that I appreciate their efforts to get the lights back on. It is such a small thing, but I know they appreciate it. Politeness and appreciation is like a lost art: when you practice it genuinely you feel good knowing that somebody has been acknowledged for their efforts. A year ago I would have said "if people are not taught manners when they are young - they will never have manners !" especially before they are seven years old . Preach! Having spent all day on a tractor cleaning mine and my neighbors driveways, I feel your pain. I gladly do it, but have never once been offered help, fuel…sometimes I’ll get a wave from a window. A lot of people seemed to have lost that sense of community,civility, and decency. I do believe that social media have played a big part into this “isolation” that we are seeing. No one seems to know how to act around “actual” people. We are becoming a society of nameless and faceless blobs of human flesh…lol

You are right. Good women are hard to find. I've been married for 23 years. My husband has cancer now and he still does for me ( because he can't work anymore) he's home now all the time and I still feel I'm not doing enough. These brats will get they're due. Have you heard of Phillis Shilaffly, I'm sure that's wrong spell. Anyway, she was against the woman's movement. It was designed to destroy the family. My last marriage fell apart because my wife "expected" all these things from me and refused to even recognized when I sacrificed for her or us, just to help her with her goals and dreams. Now I'm 43, single, trying to date again and experiencing this on a regular basis. I don’t think it’s always necessarily a lack of respect or courtesy. It has become pretty common for women to think the world should be handed to them on a silver platter, but I think culture in the last decade has instilled the mindset that women should be fearful and suspicious of every man they come in contact with that they don’t know, and that’s where it comes off disrespectful. And they should be a self-aware of the people around them! Everyone should. Its unfortunate that as men, we can’t lend a hand to a woman without them thinking we want some kind of grand favor in return. A smile and a genuine thank you goes a long way.

A tow truck Guy pulled my Car out of a bad spot, and I swear I thanked him over and over and told him how grateful I was for his help. I think you nailed it with our "princess" and "everyone gets an award" societal norms. Even some of my own children act this way at times, and they get immediately corrected. We only get them for a limited time, the rest of the time they are being trained by what they observe on social media, at school, at work, and with their friends. Our way of life is definitely at risk. Morality of the past is being rapidly eroded.

I walk to drop off an pick up my son from school everyday. It's a college prep school, so it's a small k-12. I have to walk by the high school age kids everyday and I thought they were incredibly disrespectful. No one says thanks or excuse me. No one makes eye contact. It's just weird...but what I have been realizing is that it is a lack of social confidence and skills. That may not have been the case with this lady, but realizing this has helped me get less upset about it and just try to help.

i am a young man of just 17, i grew up in a home with horrible parrents, litteral abusive drug addicts that brealy gave me food when i want hungry, and from that decided from a young age to raise myself, now ive been told im an old soul more times then i can count and every day i look back on sosciety and i wonder how i could have came from such a rotten environment and yet the people who have grown up in good familys and with decent lives could turn out to be so rotten them selfs.

When I related your story to my wife she had some choice words to say about this woman. I said I'm sure you would have liked to say some of those things to this young lady. My wife responded that "You are too much of a gentleman to do that". I agree. Don't let people like her change who you are.
