I'll always love the progression in the Three Cornetto protagonists' arcs. Shaun is a young-ish man who has to get serious about his life, Nicholas has gone too far in that direction and needs balance while Gary /never/ grew up, and now just wants to achieve one achievable thing - the Golden Mile - before opening his wrists for a second and final time. The intricate web of set-ups and pay-offs are more than punchlines, here. Pegg's performance is heart-rending, and I really hope him, Wright and Frost work together again, some day.

The film was openly advertised as a sci-fi alien invasion film when it first came out, so it's always great to see people go into this film without knowing that and then seeing their reaction to the kid's head coming off in the bathroom. I love this film, Hot Fuzz is still my favourite of the trilogy but this is definitely a really close second for me. The performances are great, the action is phenomenal and the script is so clever and full of loads of details you probably miss on your first viewing, such as how the names of the pubs coincide with a key element of the plot that happens there, or Gary's monologue at the start summarising the plot of the entire film going forward, or this key line of dialogue before they set off for Newton Haven: "I think they missed a trick only having three [musketeers], five sounds much better. That way, two could've died and there'd still be three left."

Yo, Edgar Wright *Loves* foreshadowing in his stories. I mean, the whole opening on the 1st go of the Golden Mile is a perfect parallel to their 2nd attempt. They drop off after the same pubs, Gary punches the same wall... And to show it's not just in World's End, in a completely different film, Baby Driver, look at the coffee sequence - you see Baby get Coffee and there's grafitti of a heart that changes colour from black to red in the same shot (after he sees Deborah). As he leaves the shop, he comes face to face with the police and a preacher starts shouting at him, not to mention that he almost gets hit by a car. Edgar Wright is an actual genius, and I don't use that word lightly.

There's also an element of the King Arthur legend at play where he's the Once and Future King and the others are the Knights of the Round Table. The whole film makes little references to legendary quests the whole way through. There's references to Greek stuff, Norse stuff, Arthurian legends etc. So it's deliberately staged that he gets to become the legendary hero of his dreams at the end. Thats also why he isn't drinking anymore because he's actually achieved something in life.

Fun reaction but one thing: Gary tried to end his life, that's why he was in therapy. He didn't shave because he wasn't allowed to have a razor and that's the reason why he didn't want to show his arms. He desperately wanted to recreate the best night of his life before finally ending it. After the end he overcame the depression, that's why he shaved and ordered water at the end. Really dark once you know it. Sadly that's how really depressed people act many times, they want to relive their greatest times once more and act all happy/hyped.

@@karlkoley - Watch it and consider that Gary is King Arthur and a lot of things fall into place too, Andy is Merlin, Steve is Lancelot etc. They are borrowing from quest legends a lot "The Mermaid" is full of Sirens trying to lead them to their doom for instance. So that ending is showing that he's better (not drinking) but also that he's sort of become the Once and Future King - the hero that he always wanted to be. It's a really interesting mix of Grandiose Quest story/ Sci-Fi Invasion film and talking about the need to grow up eventually but not lose your individuality in doing that.

Recommendation This doesn't have to be a reaction (I don't even know if you do reactions to other youtubers), but CinemaWins is a great channel that does deeper analysis on the films he reviews, and he's done the whole trilogy. If you feel like you missed anything, Lee probably has you covered. I don't know if you caught it, since this is edited down, but Gary is a really tragic character at the end; dude's whole plan was to drink the night away...to wrap up his life. He never planned to go home after this night.

Allen was an Australian gymnast and martial artist who was the only Westerner to ever be hired into the ultra-exclusive Jackie Chan Stunt Team. Sadly, Brad Allen died last year. This movie is really interesting when you consider this was inspired by Edgar, Nick, and Simon's distaste for how when people see them they see the other films they did in the trilogy. In fact they even got letters saying "Hey I'd love to go on a pub crawl with you!" but it was clear they meant Shaun, or Ed, or Danny, or Nicholas Angel. They aren't the people who made those films anymore, they'll never be those people anymore, and Simon in particular had a bad bout with alcoholism. Something so bad that even the birth of his kid didn't bring him out of it, which is a terrifying experience. He even admitted quite a few things in this film were a cry for help. This film is an expression that the three men have grown and matured out of being solely like the people their younger selves were. I think that makes it the best one from an outside the story context because it's about how being trapped in that nostalgia can be incredibly unhealthy, especially if you let it entirely consume you like Gary has. The film even ends with Gary still being a loser, but he also changed for the better by a noticeable amount.

I've seen this movie when it came out, then I've watched it again two or three years ago. It got darker through those years, and I've noticed a lot of details that I wasn't aware of at the first time. Like that the 12 pubs are 12 steps in the AA program (each step requires doing something; I remember one requires to apologize to the people that were hurt, right?), and if you pause at 2:58 ... there are 12 people sitting in the circle. The other thing ... the story Garry is telling at the AA meeting ... it's the summary of the whole movie. Almost, because he put some more details at the motel, where they've left the luggage. History repeats itself, I guess ... right?
@alphaomega7191
@alphaomega7191 Жыл бұрын
I think the history repeating thing is deliberate in that the whole film is just another epic quest tale like Arthur or the Greek tales, the details might change in these stories but the core behind them remains the same. Each of the pubs names has significance in the events that occur in or around them ,the Mermaid has the seductive greek style Sirens trying to lure them to their doom for instance. They have taken a ton of different sources and referenced things all the way through. The Arthurian references are plentiful, things like Steve being Lancelot in love with Sam (Guinevere) and going away only to appear again in the final battle are nods to those legends . It's such an amazingly densely layered work that comes off as something a lot deeper than expected.

It’s not that you are too loud, it’s that we have to turn up the audio to hear the movie and then turn it down when you talk… it’s about balance.

That was a fantastic trilogy commentary. “Spaced”, I still recommend it, even if you don’t add it to the channel. As for which of the three I like the most, it would be Hot Fuzz for me.

Great reactions to your final Cornetto trilogy film, Ange!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Definitely not the movie you thought it was going to be. The movie took a sharp turn into sci-fi. The blanks Gary was with at the end were the young versions of his friends. It is hard to tell as they are very beat up.

I absolutely love this film, I think it's severely underrated! Also, fun fact, I'm drinking out of that same mug! I guess we have to highlander fight for the title or something.

Many of the pubs are buildings in either Letchworth Garden City or Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire, England. I do my weekly shopping there in the Morrisons opposite the Broadway theatre and cinema that was one of them, I half expect to see Nick Frost and Simon Pegg to walk out.

The name of each pub represented what was going to happen in each scene; the monologue at the beginning spelled out the plot of the movie. Watch the movie again, knowing that information, and things will click into place.

I love watching Nick Frost & Simon Pegg films. Shaun of the Dead was class, and Hot Fuzz was great too. The Worlds End pub is in the south of England. Past the sign a couple of yrs ago, but never got to visit. Planning to be there next year, so hoping to pop in for a beer, lol.

Fun fact, there's tons of hidden easter eggs that hints what happened to the town. In the intro when they are outside on the hill look closely at the sky. Also notice the names of each pub.

I love the weird take on a sci-fi mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers mixed King Arthur mixed with the works of Homer with a soundtrack of classic tracks including Sisters of Mercy - it's so deliberately strange and yet the emotional underpinnings behind the characters work. By the way if you've never seen the King Arthur references watch it again and use this Gary is Arthur, Andy is Merlin, Steve is Lancelot, Sam is Guinevere, Peter is Gwaine and Oliver is any one of the Holy Grail quest nights who dies early - it totally works and is clearly deliberate - Gary is the Once and future King. Same with the Greek myths with the film containing references to things like Sirens (The Mermaid where they try to lure men to their doom) etc. It's all clearly trying to create a weird kind of mythic quest quality to the story which starts out in quite a mundane way and escalates. All the pubs names have significance to the events that occur in or around them too. It's just such a weird and wonderful film.
