I work in business in Japan and can basically summarize it, though take this with a grain of salt: 1. Fiscal year ends at end of March, need to release well before FF7 to get enough sales to hit targets. 2. Different developers will have their own independent sales targets even if they’re under the same conglomerate, nor will the conglomerate have the power to unilaterally decide release dates. 3. New Year comes with a ton of days off in Japan and many people take paid leave around then too, so it takes awhile for companies to get moving again in January. That combined with the above likely resulted in the release dates being so close. Probably way more to it than just these things but, yeah! Hope someone finds this interesting, at the very least.

I don't know about anything about Like A Dragon but I am not surprised that Persona 3 Reload did so well. Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 did very well. Persona 5 brought more people into the fan base. Many of these new fans were curious about the other Persona games and played Reload. These new fans as well as the fans of the original P3 and the other Persona games are the reasons for Reload's success.

For sure, i started with persona 5 royal and was hooked ever since, when i heard p3 was getting a remake i jumped on the collectors edition as fast as i could cause thats what i did with p5r. I will say this, though. The reason both games cracked 1 million in sales is because people were thirsty for these genres and anticipating the titles. Last year there was nothing at the level of these games that were released. I preordered both without hesitation, and I’m only waiting for the deluxe edition at Best Buy to be available again to preorder rebirth. The Zack & cloud steel book case is worth it to me lol

I chose not to purchase Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth because I have only played the original Like A Dragon game. As a result, I am unfamiliar with Kiryu and I believe that I may miss out on some crucial story details if I don't play the previous games.

I played 1 and 0 (11 hours each) and beat 7 and 8. You're definitely fine, i am very glad i didnt try and rush the whole series before 8, now i can go backwards and take my time

In my opinion, I don’t think there is as much overlap as you imagine there would be and that’s why both sold so well. Because there weren’t a lot of people choosing between one or the other. They just bought one. I myself never played any LAD games and went straight to P3. It was only after watching this video that I’m now thinking of playing LAD because of the comparisons you made in this video.

The best way I can put it is overall the marketing for both games and accessibility, you see Persona 3 Reload in addition to having the core demographic of people buying the game was also available on GAME PASS which made the decision of buying either a non issue, if I have P3R on game pass (Xbox or PC) I can buy Like a Dragon, then buy P3R later on. This marketing tactic helped in convincing people what game to buy as a priority then immediately after. It also helped that TikTok and social media as a whole has made the two cult following franchises super popular in the west.

Persona and Yakuza/like a dragon also have way better brand recognition than they used to have 10 years ago Final Fantasy is the 9th highest grossing selling series of all time. I actually think your assumptions are still technically correct. It's just that since more people know both series, they sold better.

People are vastly overestimating the sales power of Rebirth and underestimating the sales power of Persona; Remake did 7M and Rebirth will be lucky to sell half of that amount. It is normal for sequels to sell much less than the first game and the 4 year gap does not help things. It will not surprise me to see P3R outsell Rebirth in the long run.

To be Honest I think that P3R and yakuza have very different communities and not a lot of overlap , also i think that everyone thinks become way too much expensive . But only on some type of games , when those two games offer minimum 70 Hours of great quality gameplay i think that people would even pay 100 bucks to play them cos they are that good and they are worth it.

A lot of people are missing out one factor into both games. Both games are multi-platform and both games are on gamepass. I got to experience Persona 3 Reload on a much cheaper rate and when dlc comes out later I might buy the full game plus dlc once they are on sale. Also these are still major releases in each fan base. A full line Persona game plus a sequel to a lot of peoples personal favorite Yakuza game. A lot of people including myself don't want to spend tons of money buying a PS5 just for Rebirth. Currently waiting for the PC port release of Rebirth before playing it myself.

I think it's more of the fact that the potential market is just that more interested in getting JRPG's. Both Yakuza and Persona have seen a decent boost to their respective fanbases, and in turn they both did well even when releasing new games within a week of each other.

As someone who loves turn based JRPGs, (especially all things Megaten), and who casually enjoys the Yakuza games; I've never viewed Infinite Wealth in the same regard as other JRPG's, nor have I ever really considered LaD to be a game that scratches my itch for a JRPG; so in my mind both P3R and Infinite Wealth cater to separate demographics, but still also have overlap within their fanbases. I believe the inclusion of these games into Gamepass, has definitely driven sales on both Xbox and PC (especially since Sega primed both player bases with the earlier releases of P3P-P5R and the entire Yakuza series).

I feel like I might have said that about LaD7, since despite all its JRPG trapping it did sometimes feel like that stuff was window dressing. Or just a bit undercooked. I don't feel that way about Infinite Wealth though. It scratches pretty much all my JRPG itches. It's genuinely one of the best JRPGs I've played in years.

I don't really think so. LaD and Persona definitely has a lot of overlap between communities. Despite being a considerably more grounded series which can cater to a more general audience, LaD has that staple grindiness that RPGs have while also having a major focus on character development and storytelling. If you don't like LaD personally that's fine, but you do not represent the RPG community as a whole since LaD is demonstrably a JRPG that was on the most anticipated lists of many fans of the genre.

Sorry for the lengthy comment, but I think it's worth mentioning something pertaining to your confidence in VII Rebirth's sales dwarfing P3R and Lad:IW. While this may technically be true, SE has actually not been performing well despite this. You see, FF7 is a massive project and it's costing them far, far more for them to make it than, say, a modest remake of P3 or an asset flip like Lad:IW. SE is probably expecting around 6 million in sales for Rebirth, but the truth of the matter is, Remake sold only 4 million on the previous gen when that console had a *much* larger install base than the PS5 does now, and so the chances of Rebirth hitting those numbers are looking rather grim. FFXVI was expecting way more sales in order to make a profit, but similarly it only sold 4 million and SE has suddenly found themselves in deep water. There are no signs implying that Rebirth won't be a similar story. People are hesitant to buy consoles these days because they don't see the point when their PCs can run those games just fine, not to mention Sony tending to over charge their games for no reason. It's funny, because back when XIII released in the 2010s, SE was the one that took the multiplatform initiative and it made them bank. But for some baffling reason, they decided to go back to exclusivity deals despite knowing that XIII's and XV's sales exploded massively on the multiplatform business model, and they went back to exclusivity as Atlus decided to go multiplatform, and now SE is sitting in deep water while Atlus is enjoying far, far more revenue than SE could ever make by not being exclusive on PS5. Keep in mind that P3R sold 1 million copies in just 5 days and LaD:IW in only 2 weeks. Imagine how much money that Sega/Atlus are rolling in right now. SE would be lucky to even turn a profit with their current business model when considering how much money they've dumped into the superior visuals of VII Rebirth.

Sega knows final fantasy 7 rebirth will do extremely well so they put infinite wealth and persona 3 reload a week apart from each other because the fan base is strong but not as strong as final fantasy 7. Reload and infinite wealth wanted to make their money before rebirth came into the scene because they know the focus will be on rebirth

I have to agree about the FF7 Rebirth point, like absolutely cuz that's the point I find myself. All these games are 70USD and 60 is already a high price, 70 is worse. So with that in mind- P3 Reload is a faithful remake of a game I already played LaD/Yakuza is a series that kinda requires playing past games. I have ONLY played Kiwami 1 and Yakuza 3 so while I would love to play LaD 8, not yet. I'll absolutely play P3 and LaD 8 when I get the chance and the funds but FF7 is hard to beat for sure and where my money is going this month Slight edit: I forgot my closing statement, my overall point is that I have no doubt others are in the same boat and I am also shocked. P3 was gonna sell, no doubt but THIS WELL?

I am a massive fan of both series, (Persona 3 FES is my favorite game of all time and I have played all of mainline RGG games (including the PS2 titles) and am gonna play the Japanese exclusive Samurai game soon (Kenzan)) what I did was buy both and just choose one to focus on for the time being. I'm mostly focusing on P3R though because of biases towards that game (been a really good remake so far) and stuff, I did play a good chunk of IW though and its been great. Not everyone is in the sort of situation I am at though and can get both games easily back to back so I get why people would choose over the other. Sega was a bit messed up pushing these games together tho I wished I had more time with IW before p3r.

I already paid for Persona 3 Portable last year, I got a $50 Gamestop Gift Card for Christmas so I put that down for Infinite Wealth and I'm gonna wait till either there's a Sale or borrow a copy of Persona 3 Reload from a friend. $70 bucks is a no go for me mostly because screw the games industry arbitrarily deciding to increase the price of games (in the midsts of inflation I might add) oh and also 20 bucks for NG+ for Infinite Wealth? Ive platinumed both yakuza 8 qnd persona 3 reload. Before going into it i went to make sure i was done with both games by ff7 reburth. I booked 4 days off work for yakuza 8 and finished the plat after 70 hours, risked starting persona 3 and platinumed that a few days ago, both good games but wish the story and pacing was better in yakuza 8

lol It's not, Persona 5 was. Reload only sold gangbusters because of P5's success and the garnering of new fans, not because of the original game's. Keep in mind that Atlus almost went bankrupt around the 2010's, which was a good deal after P3's initial release. Not to mention P4G outselling it by a lot. In short, Reload's install base is largely comprised of 5 fans, just so you know. P5 skyrocketed Persona into mainstream.

Since recently having my first child I've been back on the JRPG train as I can just play on my sporadically / insanely random free time. No relying on my usual co op buddies at a scheduled time in other games. I got both P3 and LAD2 at release. They're not dropping in price anytime soon so whatever. Playing thru lad first and I can't wait to pop p3 into the ps5 to start that deep dive. I'm so grateful that these calibre of games are still getting pumped out in a wildly frightful industry, and that they're doing so well! Is the release schedule insane?! Of course lol. You do realize FF7 is a PS5 Exclusive? it'll only really effect Playstation sales. Also Yakuza and Persona don't have much crossover outside of both being owned by SEGA. Most consumers aren't thinking about the publisher when they purchase a game rather the franchise. Theres obviously those of us who always had planned to play both too.

I mean Sega isn't getting a drop of my money after the localization triple down and P3R is on gamepass and it's really meh, not that it matters since it's better than the rerelease p3p and the answer dlc is a ways off. I don't recommend getting it now unless you have gamepass and the dlc pass is garbage. Unrelated note the music in game is way worse than either previous version. The mall theme peaks my sound system so high it makes my pets nervous with the damned whistling they put in the song. Buying the P5 music replacement only works in battles so the butchered soundtrack never stops.

As a Yakuza fan, I didn't buy 8 because it's pretty much the same as 7 and I hated the combat in that game. The last mainline Yakuza game to me was 6.

Well if it's any consolation the combat is so much better than 7 it's crazy. They added a ton of depth to the gameplay and added a bunch of much needed mechanics so yeah if u like turn based games it's worth playing. If you don't like turn based games then ur missing out lol

8 is a lot more improved. Honestly enjoyed yakuza 8 over p3r, it was just a refreshing rpg because of the gameplay
